Back towards the end of the 14th century, the story of Momotaro, the Peach Boy, began. And, over the centuries the story has been told and retold until it's become a classic. Surprisingly, during the Russo-Japanese War in the 1890s, Momotaro was altered to make him a nationalistic Japanese hero. And, the same thing happened again at about the time Japan invaded Manchuria....with quite a few cartoons being created where Momotaro and his friends are now in the Japanese military! And, as such, their job is to help people and make the world a better place....an interesting way to try to explain away a war based on Japanese aggression and expansionism!
In this story, an evil shark is bothering the animals in the ocean. So, Momotaro and his friends are going to investigate using Momotaro's submarine(!). However, only his dog and monkey friends join him as his pheasant friend cannot swim. Oddly, apparently Momotaro and the two friends not only can swim but breath under water! And, using this sub and a very sharp sword, they mete justice out to the evil shark!
So, the moral seems to be that the Japanese war machine is there to help make the world a better place. An interesting and upside down message....making this a lousy story but an interesting historical curio.
