‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Review: Netflix’s Lavish Teen Horror Show Is an Empowering Update (Spoiler-Free)

Dark and gritty remakes are the plat du jour of TV’s golden age, especially when drawing from comic books. However, Sabrina Spellman’s story earns the imposing shadows and prodigious screams that color her new Netflix series, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.” Ditching the bright and cheery tone established in Archie Comics’ original incantation and continued in the 1996 sitcom, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” it leans hard into the “witch” affiliations even without the word in its title. While still a teen story at heart — and one built for the masses — Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s take is laden with demons, trolls, warlocks, and more, all of which growl with enough menace to evoke a steady stream of shrieks.

What’s even more welcome than effective frights is how eager “Chilling Adventures” is to embrace the genre’s inclusive, progressive spirit. The teens of Greendale High like dissecting the allegories within zombie movies

If you ever thought that pockets of the world have been gearing towards an apocalypse by having weird parties in the desert, then you’d be 100% right. ‘Counterpart’ Season 2 Trailer: The Two Howards Really Struggle with a Life Swap in J.K. Simmons-Led Starz Spy Drama
Twice the Howards, twice the J.K. Simmons, twice the number of seasons of “Counterpart” premiering in 2018.

In another double move, the Starz drama released a full trailer for its second season 2 months ahead of the release date, showing a world where both Howard Silks (Simmons) are grappling with the ramifications of their season-closing swap. One is particularly not happy (and this time he has a convenient growth of stubble to help audiences start to tell the two of them apart).

Part of that may coincide with the arrival of James Cromwell’s overseer of sorts, making sure that the captured Howard Prime stays in his detention facility. This first glimpse at Season 2 also makes a quick introduction for Betty Gabriel’s new character, an ex-FBI specialist trying to suss out the double agent inside the office led by Peter Quayle (Harry Lloyd).

It also looks like Quayle’s got

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Review: Kiernan Shipka Casts an Irresistible Spell in Netflix's Scary-Good Reboot

‘Tis the season for TV witches: From Charmed to American Horror Story, a veritable coven of spell casters is invading the small screen just in time for Halloween. But it’s hard to imagine any of them finding a way to top Netflix’s long-awaited Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. A vividly imagined and surprisingly playful blend of Gothic horror and pitch-black comedy, this new Sabrina (debuting Friday, Oct. 26) fully embraces the campy pulpiness of its source material, and might be the most purely fun new series of the fall.

In the idyllic town of Greendale, “where it always feels like Halloween,
