National Review Apologizes to Covington Catholic Students

The National Review offered an apology to the students of Covington Catholic High School on Tuesday after deputy managing editor Nick Frankovich wrote that their behavior toward Omaha tribal elder Nathan Phillips had been comparable to spitting on the cross.

“In this business, all we can do is own up to mistakes when they happen. We apologize to our readers and especially to the Covington students, who didn’t need us piling on,” the magazine’s editors wrote in a piece titled “The Covington Affair.”

“Nick was operating off the best version of events he had on Saturday night, and writing as a faithful Catholic and pro-lifer who has the highest expectations of his compatriots, not as a social-justice activist,” they continued. “As soon as better evidence emerged, we deleted the post.”

U.K. Cinema Attendance in 2018 Was Highest Since 1970

Cinema attendance in the U.K. topped 177 million in 2018, the highest number since 1970. Box office held firm at £1.3 billion ($1.7 billion) through the year as 10 movies crossed the £30 million threshold in the year. That compares with 6 in 2017.

After a sweltering summer in the U.K. and in a soccer World Cup year that saw the England team fare well, the figures are impressive amid a mixed picture elsewhere in Europe.

Industry experts said a diverse slate of big-budget movies piqued audience interest and investment in infrastructure – over a dozen new movie theaters opened in 2018 and many others were refurbished – propelled the U.K. to a banner year in terms of bums on seats.

The admissions number had been tipped to hit a decades-long high, but was still welcomed by the industry. It was up almost 4% year-on-year.

“These fantastic figures for 2018 confirm that the UK cinema sector remains in extraordinary health,” said Phil Clapp of the U.

“I’m over 62 years old, I’ve never been nominated for anything in my life. So far for this thing I’ve had 21 awards, so getting this nomination, it’s the cherry on top of the whole thing,” Grant told TheWrap. “Usually actors — by the time they get to my age — the parts have diminished, so whatever recognition you have is amazing.”
