Jordan Peele's 'Us' Delivers a Mind-Blowing $70 Million Debut

Jordan Peele's 'Us' Delivers a Mind-Blowing $70 Million Debut
Universal's release of Jordan Peele's Us dominated the domestic box office, not only out-performing the opening weekends for several recent horror hits, but delivering the second largest opening ever for a live-action, original picture, topping the weekend box office with over $70 million. As a result, the 2019 box office continues to improve over the month of March after struggling to begin the year. Overall, this weekend was the third straight to outperform the same weekend last year. At #1, with an estimated $70.25 million (~49.6% of all tickets sold among the top 12 films), Us topped the weekend box office with the third largest opening of all-time for an R-rated horror film, blowing away 2018's The Nun ($53.8m opening) and placing behind Universal's own Halloween, which opened with $76.2 million last October. The film also decimated the opening for Peele's previous film Get Out, which was a massive hit back in 2017 following a $33.3 million debut.

Series Mania: ‘Hierro’ as ‘Southern Noir’ and an Industry Groundbreaker

Lille, France — Banijay Rights-sold “Hierro” begins with sea, land, air and fire: Shots of the stunning volcanic isle of El Hierro, the most westerly point of Spain’s Canary Islands, with its black basalt rock, brown iron-rich gravel, white waves pummeling the coast, trees trunks twisted by wind and lava, a juniper bent double by wind.

But as much as it features extraordinary nature, and starts with a murder victim in a kind of southern isle Noir, “Hierro” turns, above all, on human nature, how it clings to and is forged by custom, and the complex, contradictory, comparable and contrasting characters of Candela,

(Major spoilers ahead for the March 24 episode of “The Walking Dead” on AMC)

(No really, we’ve got huge spoilers below)

Wow. With only one episode remaining in season 9, “The Walking Dead” just hit us with one of the biggest emotional bombshells in the history of a series full of them. The Whisperers finally made their big statement, and that statement left a bunch of folks from the Kingdom, Alexandria and Hilltop dead.

In a sequence ripped nearly straight from the pages of the “Walking Dead” comics, Alpha (Samantha Morton) and her Whisperers managed to capture Daryl (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Carol (Melissa McBride) and Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), held them captive overnight and then Alpha delivered a speech to Daryl about how the Whisperers can live peacefully alongside the communities so long as they stay out of Whisperer territory. And if they don’t abide by those rules then

Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ Music: How the Beach Boys and N.W.A Came to Anchor a Great Horror Playlist

Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ Music: How the Beach Boys and N.W.A Came to Anchor a Great Horror Playlist
If there were an award for music supervisor of the year, Jordan Peele himself would already strongly be in the running. The filmmaker took on the role himself for his new horror-thriller, “Us,” although there’s no such credit in the end titles, since the writer-director-producer didn’t necessarily need to become any more of a multi-hyphenate than he already is. If, in years or decades to come, you can’t listen to a certain Beach Boys song without flinching, or a particular N.W.A number without laughing, Peele is the man to credit or blame.

[Spoiler alert: While the following article doesn’t get deep into plot points, discussing music choices does involve revealing a couple of the movie’s best jokes, so if you’re especially averse to humor spoilers, wait until you’ve seen “Us” to read further .]

“Us” makes prominent use of the mid-‘90s hip-hop hit “I Got 5 On It” — as heard in the trailer — in both song form and an eerie instrumental score reprise, as well as key cuts from the present and distant past by Janelle Monae and Minnie Riperton. But the choices that are going to

‘Us': Here Are 8 of the Craziest, Greatest Theories, From Duality to 11:11

Alright, you’ve seen Jordan Peele’s “Us,” and all you want to do is call your friends and dissect every detail and plot point. We’re here to help and to take you through some of the theories that have been floated on the world wide web since its debut.

There’s so much to comb through in this film, from obvious imagery to not-so-blatant thematic explorations. Of course, writer and director Peele wants to point out the two sides to our personalities, that we often have an animalistic side that we can’t always push down.

“Us” stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Alex Evans. It follows a family that goes to their vacation house in Santa Cruz to discover they are

Hollywood Stars Downplay Barr’s Summary of Mueller Russia Probe: ‘Only the Full Report Matters’
While many of Donald Trump’s biggest critics in Hollywood have yet to respond to Attorney General William Barr’s summary of the Robert Mueller investigation, Rosie O’Donnell best summarized the early reaction: demand for the full report’s release.

“The summary is irrelevant,” O’Donnell wrote in a brief tweet. “Only the full report matters.”

In Barr’s official summary sent to Congress, it was reported that Mueller’s investigation found no evidence that Donald Trump or his presidential campaign conspired with Russia to sway the 2016 presidential election. But on the matter of obstruction of justice charges, Barr wrote that “while this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”

Despite this, Barr wrote that the Department of Justice concluded that the evidence Mueller found was “not sufficient to establish that the president committed an obstruction-of-justice offense.” That decision not

All Those ‘Us’ Michael Jackson Shout-Outs Explained, From ‘Thriller’ T-Shirt to a Single Glove
(Major spoiler alert: Do not read on if you haven’t seen Jordan Peele’s “Us.”)

Jordan Peele’s “Us” is chock full of references to Michael Jackson, starting when Lupita Nyongo’s younger self wins a “Thriller” t-shirt at the Santa Cruz boardwalk in the 1980s.

But Peele and his costume designer Kym Barrett threw several more nods to the late King of Pop, who is back in the news given the documentary “Leaving Neverland,” in which two men accuse Jackson of sexual abuse (accusations that his estate has disputed).

The doppelgängers in the film, or The Tethered, wear red jumpsuits and one single glove — just as Jackson wore a red jumpsuit during his famed 1983 music video “Thriller,” and Jackson’s single white glove covered in silver sequins made its TV debut during his performance of “Billy Jean” at Motown’s 25th anniversary in 1983. The single glove would become
