‘Woman At War’: Jodie Foster Will Direct & Star In English Version Of Iceland’s Oscar Entry
Exclusive: Two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster will direct, co-produce and star in an English-language remake of Woman at War, the spirited and eccentric eco-thriller that Iceland has officially submitted for the Foreign Language competition at the upcoming 91st Academy Awards.

Foster will reinterpret the role of Halla (played in the original film by Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir), a genial middle-aged music teacher hiding a secret life as an outlaw environmental activist with a grudge against the local aluminum industry that is despoiling the pristine Highlands of Iceland. Halla is escalating her one-woman campaign of sabotage when an unexpected letter arrives with news: her adoption application has been approved and a baby girl is awaiting her in the Ukraine.

It’s nature vs. nurture, so to speak, as the unlikely eco-avenger finds herself questioning her political convictions and destiny even as government agents hunt for her and an orphaned child awaits to fulfill Halla’s dream of motherhood.

Scores from ‘Green Book,’ ‘Solo,’ Others Disqualified from Oscar Race (Exclusive)

Scores from ‘Green Book,’ ‘Solo,’ Others Disqualified from Oscar Race (Exclusive)
First-round voting is underway for Oscar’s Original Song and Original Score categories, but Academy music-branch voters are discovering that four talked-about scores are missing from the eligibility list.

Music for “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Green Book,” “Mandy” and “The Other Side of the Wind” has been disqualified for various reasons, Variety has learned.

More than 150 scores are in the running, although only the approximately 300 music-branch members have access to the list when they log onto the Academy website to cast their ballots. This year, unlike previous years, the Academy chose not to release the complete rundowns of qualified scores and songs.

Solo: A Star Wars Story,” composed by John Powell with themes by John Williams, was nixed by the board as having been entered too late for the competition (deadline was Nov. 15).

“Mandy,” the Nicolas Cage revenge thriller that featured the late Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson’s final score,

Could Trump Go to Prison Once He’s Out of Office?

On Friday evening, both Special Counsel Robert Mueller and prosecutors for the Southern District of New York filed memos offering sentence recommendations for Michael Cohen, President Trump’s embattled former attorney who has been a focal point for investigations spanning both offices. The memos were pretty damning for Cohen’s former boss. Mueller wrote that Trump told Cohen to reach out to the Russian government in late 2015, and that he pursued a lucrative real estate deal that would have likely required the cooperation of the Kremlin well into the 2016 campaign.

Travis Knight on Getting the Call to Direct ‘Bumblebee’: ‘Did You Guys Get The Right Number?’
Bumblebee” director Travis Knight admits he couldn’t really believe it when Paramount Studios and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura called him two years ago to ask him to direct the Transformers movie.

“My initial question was, ‘Did you guys get the right number?'” Knight joked at Sunday’s premiere of “Bumblebee” at the Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. “You’ve seen the kind of movies I make right? You know I make weird little artisanal indie films with my bare hands. I play with dolls for a living.”

It wasn’t long before he came around to the idea. “I grew up with the Transformers,” he said, recalling watching the cartoons, reading the comic books, and playing with Transformers toys. “I had a little Bumblebee action figure. Me and him would go on little adventures in my parents’ basement.”

Along the way, the trio will run into a bunch of familiar faces, a number of which we guess definitely aren’t dead.

Has this whole show been one long and unfortunate training session to turn the Baudelaire’s into proper and prepared V.F.D. volunteers? We’ll find out pretty shortly into the new year.
