'Ralph' Reigns Over Slow Weekend at the Box Office While 'Aquaman' Dominates in China Debut
The domestic weekend was, for the most part, as light as was expected. While it wasn't the lowest grossing weekend of the year so far, it was the second lowest with the top twelve delivering a combined $77.8 million. This is all in advance of what should be a profitable holiday season to come and we got a hint as to just how profitable it could be with the launch of WB's Aquaman in China this weekend where the film delivered a massive $93.6 million, becoming the #1 film globally from one market alone. Beginning with the domestic box office, while it looked like it might be neck-and-neck between Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet and Universal and Illumination's The Grinch at the top of the box office following Friday's estimates, Ralph carried the weekend as expected, though The Grinch wasn't far behind. Ralph brought in an estimated $16.1 million for the weekend,

Scores from ‘Green Book,’ ‘Solo,’ Others Disqualified from Oscar Race (Exclusive)

Scores from ‘Green Book,’ ‘Solo,’ Others Disqualified from Oscar Race (Exclusive)
First-round voting is underway for Oscar’s Original Song and Original Score categories, but Academy music-branch voters are discovering that four talked-about scores are missing from the eligibility list.

Music for “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Green Book,” “Mandy” and “The Other Side of the Wind” has been disqualified for various reasons, Variety has learned.

More than 150 scores are in the running, although only the approximately 300 music-branch members have access to the list when they log onto the Academy website to cast their ballots. This year, unlike previous years, the Academy chose not to release the complete rundowns of qualified scores and songs.

Solo: A Star Wars Story,” composed by John Powell with themes by John Williams, was nixed by the board as having been entered too late for the competition (deadline was Nov. 15).

“Mandy,” the Nicolas Cage revenge thriller that featured the late Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson’s final score,

'The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou': THR's 2004 Review

'The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou': THR's 2004 Review
On Dec. 10, 2004, Wes Anderson unveiled his latest ensemble comedy, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, in theaters in New York and Los Angeles. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below:

Although still fond of oddballs and eccentrics, Wes Anderson moves past the merely quirky in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, his wonderfully weird and wistful adventure-comedy about a fish-out-of-water oceanographer. Following his Oscar-nominated turn in Lost in Translation, Bill Murray brings his singularly edgy ennui to the unlikely role of a modern-day Ahab.

The writer-director's most recent film, The Royal Tenenbaums, was a museum collection of character types ...

'Roma' Targeting Major Theatrical Release in China

Alfonso Cuaron's awards-season favorite Roma remains somewhat hard to find in movie theaters across most of the U.S., despite Netflix's unprecedented decision to give the film a limited theatrical run in select cities domestically and overseas.

Movie lovers in China, however, could soon enjoy the luxury of seeing the critically acclaimed film on the big screen with far greater ease.

E Stars, an influential film distributor based in Beijing, has acquired the Chinese theatrical rights to Roma from Participant Media, which produced the film (Lionsgate International brokered the deal). The Chinese company is laying the groundwork to release ...

China Box Office: ‘Aquaman’ Sinks All Challengers With $94 Million Opening

China Box Office: ‘Aquaman’ Sinks All Challengers With $94 Million Opening
The decision to release “Aquaman” in China two weeks prior to its North American outing paid off handsomely. The DC Comics adaptation achieved a massive $94.1 million opening in three days, according to data from Asian entertainment consultancy Artisan Gateway.

The early release meant that the film played against weak opposition – tired Hollywood and Chinese holdovers and a small Chinese picture. That allowed it to achieve an 85% market share. National box office for the weekend was $108 million.

The opening figures represented the biggest weekend ever for a Warner Bros. title in China – the film was released in China through state-owned China Film Group – beating “Ready Player One” by 66%. It was also by far the best score for a DC Comics title, which are sometimes considered too dark for mainstream audience tastes in China, compared with Disney’s Marvel franchise. It beat “Justice League” by 92% and “Batman Vs Superman” by 78% and overtook

Alfonso Cuarón Details ‘Roma’ Cinematography With ‘Gravity’ Dp Emmanuel Lubezki

Alfonso Cuarón Details ‘Roma’ Cinematography With ‘Gravity’ Dp Emmanuel Lubezki
As part of an overall push to bring Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma” to awards season voters, Netflix’s “‘Roma’ Experience'” played host to guild and Academy members Sunday in Hollywood. The all-day event featured panels focused on the film’s crafts and an audio-visual installation akin to the streamer’s FYSee initiative for Emmy contenders, featuring costumes and art department elements as well as a surround-sound immersion into the movie’s soundscape.

The final panel was the day’s hottest ticket: a conversation between Cuarón and his longtime cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. Cuarón had in fact designed “Roma” to be shot by Lubezki and put in a lot of early prep work with the three-time Oscar winner. With the financial success of “Gravity,” Cuarón was able to make his next movie precisely the way he wanted to. For him, the most valuable resource when working is time, so he plotted out plenty of it.

Bill Cosby Is to Blame for ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ Ban, Says Songwriter’s Daughter
The banning of the holiday classic “Baby It’s Cold Outside” because critics suggest it alludes to date rape is ruffling the songwriter’s daughter, who blames the turn of events on Bill Cosby.

“Bill Cosby ruined it for everybody,” Susan Loesser — whose father is legendary songwriter Frank Loesser — told NBC News on Thursday.

“Way before #MeToo, I would hear from time to time people call it a date rape song. I would get annoyed because it’s a song my father wrote for him and my mother to sing at parties. But ever since Cosby was accused of drugging women, I hear the date rape thing all the time.”
