'Wreck-It Ralph' & 'Creed' Sequels Headed Toward Big Thanksgiving Debuts

'Wreck-It Ralph' & 'Creed' Sequels Headed Toward Big Thanksgiving Debuts
As the month rolls on, the yearly box office will receive a generous boost from this long, holiday weekend. The five-day Thanksgiving frame will see Disney debut the animated sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet, MGM will come out punching with Creed II and Lionsgate's release of Robin Hood will hope to steal some of the leftover loot. Additionally, carryover films such as Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Grinch will add their own contributions to the bottom line. At the top of the box office, look for Disney Animation's Ralph Breaks the Internet to give the studio the Thanksgiving crown for the third year in a row. Last year Coco delivered a $72.9 million five-day opening while the year before that Moana brought in a massive $82 million, the second largest five-day Thanksgiving opening of all-time. In fact, Disney owns ten of the top eleven five-day Thanksgiving openings

Alessandro Nivola Eyed to Star in ‘Sopranos’ Movie as Dickey Moltisanti (Exclusive)
It looks like David Chase and New Line have found their first star for the “Sopranos” feature film.

Sources tell Variety that Alessandro Nivola is in negotiations to star as Dickey Moltisanti in “The Many Saints of Newark,” the prequel movie to the critically acclaimed and massively successful HBO TV series.

New Line could not be reached for comment on the casting.

In the series, Moltisanti is the deceased uncle of Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini, and father of Christopher Moltisanti, played by Michael Imperioli. In the show, the character never appears, as he was murdered prior to the drama’s timeline, but is talked about as someone who, along with Soprano’s father and Uncle Junior, helped turn their small gang into the New Jersey crime family that Soprano eventually heads.

Alan Taylor is directing from a script that series creator Chase penned along with Lawrence Konner. Chase is also producing the pic.

Idfa Forum: New Doc ‘Tracks’ Sheppard Sisters’ Sprint into the Spotlight (Exclusive)
Before they appeared on the cover of “Sports Illustrated,” before the TV appearances and red-carpet galas and the surprise home makeover from Tyler Perry, the Sheppard sisters were living in a homeless shelter in Brooklyn with their single mother.

How they overcame adversity and raced their way into the limelight is the subject of “Sisters On Track,” an in-depth portrait of track-and-field stars Tai, Rainn and Brooke Sheppard as they battle through hardship while pursuing Olympic glory. Produced by Anita R. Larsen for Sant & Usant, and directed by Corinne van der Borch and Tone Grøttjord-Glenne, the project will be taking part in the Idfa Forum this week.

Van der Borch first encountered the Sheppards through a mutual friend, who’d met the sisters at a neighborhood block party. It didn’t take long for the Dutch filmmaker, who’s been living in Brooklyn for 12 years, to get drawn in by their story.

Idfa Film Review: ‘The Border Fence’

In the opening shot of “The Border Fence,” the camera straddles the invisible line between Austria and Italy, watching without comment as a man blithely walks from one country to the other. This is as it should be in modern Europe, where a heavy influx of refugees and migrants from countries devastated by war and stripped of economic opportunity has sparked a pushback against the flow of newcomers (witness Brexit). Sound familiar? Americans need only look to their own border — and the seemingly absurd proposal to build a wall that will keep immigrants out — to recognize much of the same psychology at play.

But director Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s documentary isn’t about the vast Mexico-u.S. border. Rather, it’s about a controversial 2016 proposal by Austrian politicians to erect a 370-meter wire fence across the Brenner Pass, a narrow break in the otherwise postcard-ready expanse of the Alps that separate Austria from Italy.

Colbert: ‘Did Donald Trump Knowingly Provide Cover for a Murderous Autocrat?’ (Video)
On Tuesday’s episode of “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert said that Donald Trump’s statement earlier in the day in support of Saudi Arabia provided “cover for a murderous autocrat.”

“The president got out in front of the CIA today,” said Colbert, referring to an upcoming CIA report linking Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“Apparently you can kill a Washington Post journalist,” Colbert continued, “and the president don’t give a damn. ‘Cause Trump’s official presidential decision on who is to blame is a resolute ‘I dunno.'”
