George R.R. Martin Says "Game of Thrones" Prequel Pilot Won’t Involve Targaryens, TBD on Dragons

George R.R. Martin Says
George R.R. Martin has shared yet another fact about the “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot — which may or may not be titled “The Long Night.”

While discussing his new book, "Fire and Blood" — which catalogs the history of Westeros before the current events of Martin’s "A Song of Ice and Fire" books and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ fantasy series — the author teased more about the upcoming project, which is set 10,000 years before “GoT.”

And, well, if you were hoping for a lot of the same elements of “Thrones” in its prequel, you might be disappointed, as this Westeros very different from the one we know now. For one, there won’t be Targaryens and there may not even be dragons, said Martin, who is working with HBO and showrunner Jane Goldman.

The actor John Bluthal, who has died aged 89, forged a long and successful acting career in Britain that began in the golden age of television in the 1960s, when he provided a foil to the comedy legends Michael Bentine, Eric Sykes, Peter Cook and, over several decades, Spike Milligan.

Can ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Survive Without Enchanting New Audiences?

Can ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Survive Without Enchanting New Audiences?
As J.K. Rowling continues to expand the “Harry Potter” universe, the generation that grew up watching onscreen adventures of the Boy Who Lived have remained a faithful bunch.

That much was clear from the opening weekend of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the latest installment in the seemingly endless array of “Harry Potter” sequels, prequels, spinoffs and stage shows. The umpteenth return to the fantasy series launched with $62 million at the domestic box office, a sizable and potentially problematic drop from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Like the first Fantastic Beasts installment, the audience breakdown was much older than the movies centering around the bespectacled boy wizard.

The lower than expected start displays that beyond die-hard fans, the Wizarding World has struggled to entice a new wave of Potterheads.

Former Writers Guild West President Pays Tribute to William Goldman: ‘Our Most Complete Screenwriter’

Former Writers Guild West President Pays Tribute to William Goldman: ‘Our Most Complete Screenwriter’
William Goldman wrote the way Joe Dimaggio played ball: with such deft and consummate skill that the impossible seemed easy. (It wasn’t. And isn’t.) Reading a Goldman screenplay, you never see the armature, the scaffolding. You see people, real people, just a bit more vivid than they might be were they not in a Goldman movie.

Perhaps because he was a novelist long before he was a screenwriter, his screenplays are writerly. They’re literate without ever being literary. And though Goldman’s dialogue was ferociously memorable – is there a more iconic line in all of cinema than the one in which Inigo Montoya announces his name, his motivation, his intention? — Goldman knew that image creates character creates story. The very first words of Goldman’s very first original screenplay:

He was introducing his protagonist; but he might as well have been describing himself.

Goldman was also a master of exposition.

Stan Lee’s Company Slams Bill Maher’s ‘Disgusting’ Response to Comic Book Legend’s Death

Stan Lee’s Company Slams Bill Maher’s ‘Disgusting’ Response to Comic Book Legend’s Death
Stan Lee’s company Pow! Entertainment posted an open letter on Monday in response to a blog post written by Bill Maher that chided the Marvel icon after he died on Nov. 12.

Maher’s initial blog post criticized American adults for taking comic books seriously and questioned the validity of Lee’s legacy.

In response, Lee’s company wrote, “Mr. Maher: Comic books, like all literature, are storytelling devices. When written well by great creators such as Stan Lee, they make us feel, make us think and teach us lessons that hopefully make us better human beings. One lesson Stan taught so many of us was tolerance and respect, and thanks to that message, we are grateful that we can say you have a right to your opinion that comics are childish and unsophisticated. Many said the same about Dickens, Steinbeck, Melville and even Shakespeare.”

The letter also calls Maher’s statements “disgusting,

Review: Anderson.Paak’s Vivacious ‘Oxnard’ Strives to Be a Cali-Hip-Hop Epic
Anderson .Paak’s third LP Oxnard is his first release on Dr. Dre’s Aftermath label, and for longtime fans It’s been interesting (and maybe a bit worrying) to watch him scale up his career goals to meet the ambitions of his new corporate benefactors. But his supporters shouldn’t worry.
