Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Remake of Denmark’s Oscar Entry ‘The Guilty’ (Exclusive)
Bold Films, and Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker’s Nine Stories Productions have acquired the rights to remake the Danish thriller “The Guilty,” with Gyllenhaal attached to star.

The pic, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, won the world cinema audience award and was also named one of the top five foreign language films of 2018 by the National Board of Review. The movie, Denmark’s foreign language film Oscar entry, is also nominated for best screenwriter and best actor at the 2018 European Film Awards.

The movie follows a police officer under investigation, who’s demoted to desk-work at an emergency call center. When he receives a terrified phone call from a kidnapped woman, he must battle his internal demons in order to save her.

Gyllenhaal and Marker will produce for Nine Stories, alongside Bold Films’ Michel Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, David Litvak, and Svetlana Metkina. Bold Films will finance the pic.

Big Little Lies” and “Sharp Objects” alum Jean-Marc Vallée has re-teamed with HBO for yet another limited series.

The director has signed on to direct and executive produce the network’s upcoming adaptation of “Gorilla and the Bird,” HBO announced on Monday.

An adaptation of the memoir by former attorney Zack McDermott, the series is described as “an inspirational tale of a mother’s unconditional love for her bipolar son.” Bryan Sipe, who previously collaborated with Vallée on the 2015 Jake Gyllenhaal-led film “Demolition,” is executive producer and showrunner on the limited series.

"Power" Shuts Down Production After Crew Member Killed

The Starz series “Power” has shut down production after an on-set accident led to the death of a production assistant early Monday morning.

Pedro Jimenez was setting up traffic cones for a shoot in Brooklyn at approximately 4:30 Am ET when he was struck by an SUV. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of the members of our ‘Power’ family,” a Starz spokesperson said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with Mr. Jimenez’ family as we work to fully understand what has happened.”

It is unknown at this time precisely how long the production shut down will last. “Power” is currently in production on its sixth season.

A “Duke Nukem” movie is in the works with Gearbox Software teaming with “Assassin’s Creed” producer Jean-Julien Baronnet to adapt the video game into a feature film, Variety has learned exclusively.

Gearbox had been working on “Duke Nukem” with Paramount Studios and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, with John Cena rumored as a possible star earlier this year. Paramount, however, is no longer involved in the project.

Duke Nukem first appeared in the 1991 eponymous video game, developed by Apogee Software, as a muscular cigar-chomping man who always wears Ray-Bans and sports a flat-top haircut as he fights aliens to save planet Earth by using enormous physical strength and his expertise in firearms. He’s appeared in 19 video games as the title character, most recently in “Duke Nukem 3D: World Tour.”

Time Magazine has named a group of journalists that they labeled “The Guardians” and the “War on Truth” as its 2018 Person of the Year, passing on President Trump for a second consecutive year along with a number of more famous names on the list.

“The manipulation and abuse of truth is really the common thread in so many of this year’s major stories,” Time Magazine editor Edward Felsenthal said during a reveal on the “Today” show Tuesday. “We chose to highlight four individuals and one group who have taken great risks in pursuit of greater truth.”

Those honored in this year’s issue include murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Filipina reporter Maria Ressa, two Reuters journalists currently imprisoned in Myanmar, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, and the entire staff at Maryland’s Capital Gazette newspaper.

Oscar-winning French actress Juliette Binoche will preside over the main jury at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival.

Binoche is known worldwide for her work in such films as “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” and “Chocolat.” She won an Academy Award and a Silver Bear in Berlin for her role in Anthony Minghella’s “The English Patient,” and has a longstanding relationship with the Berlinale, where “The Night Is Young” screened in competition in 1987 and “The Lovers on the Bridge” in the Forum section in 1992.

Ventana Sur: Belgium’s Eklektik, Italy’s Alba, Argentina’s Aramos Co-Produce ‘The Veil’ (Exclusive)

Belgian film house Eklektik Productions is teaming with Italy’s Alba Produzioni and Argentina’s Aramos Cine to co-produce Stefano Pasetto’s feature drama project “El velo” (The Veil).

The Veil” was presented at September’s San Sebastian Co-Production Forum and then chosen for pitching at the upcoming Proyecta showcase, a new joint initiative launched by Argentine film-tv market Ventana Sur and the San Sebastian Festival, aimed to foster co-productions with and within Latin America.

Set up at Eklektik, “The Veil” has already been granted development subsidies from Europe’s Media Program and Belgium’s Federation of Wallonie Bruxelles, who’s also supporting the project’s production.

“We will be at a financing stage until next summer; the plan is to start shooting in the fall in Buenos Aires, Uruguay, Italy and Belgium locations,” said Eklektik head of production Tatjana Kozar.
