Can 'Avengers: Infinity War' Deliver a Record Opening Weekend?

Can 'Avengers: Infinity War' Deliver a Record Opening Weekend?
Following the record-breaking, $207.4 million opening for The Avengers in May of 2012, it took three years for another film to top the $200 million mark when Jurassic World debuted with $208.8 million in June 2015. Later that year Star Wars: The Force Awakens would go on to deliver the largest opening weekend ever, coming just shy of $250 million, en route to a domestic run topping $936 million. Since then, two more films have topped the $200 million mark over the course of their opening weekend in the recent releases of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Black Panther, and with the release of Avengers: Infinity War this weekend, it isn't so much a question of whether it will be the third film in the last five months to open over $200 million, but can it threaten Force Awakens's all-time record? Debuting in over 4,470 locations, Avengers: Infinity War will be the widest debut for a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever,

‘Westworld’s’ Shannon Woodward to Produce Series Based on Nxivm Sex Cult
Annapurna Television is developing a scripted series inspired by the alleged sex cult NXIVM, with “Westworld” actress Shannon Woodward attached to executive produce.

The potential series is based on the New York Times report about the group published last year. The report, authored by Barry Meier, featured interviews with multiple women who said the purported self-help group, led by Keith Raniere, recruited women to serve as “slaves” and branded them with Raniere’s initials.

No writer is attached yet, but Woodward will executive produce along with Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle and Susan Goldberg of Annapurna.

The group has come under renewed interest in recent weeks, after Raniere was arrested in Mexico last month on charges of sex trafficking. “Smallville” star Allison Mack, who was identified as Raniere’s top lieutenant in the Times report, was arrested last week.

Alan Ball’s Drama ‘Here and Now’ Canceled By HBO After One Season

  • Deadline
Alan Ball’s Drama ‘Here and Now’ Canceled By HBO After One Season
Exclusive: HBO is not renewing Alan Ball’s family drama Here and Now for a second season. The news comes 10 days after the series’ Season 1 finale.

“After careful consideration we have decided not to move forward with a second season of Here and Now,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. “We thank Alan for his dedication to innovative storytelling, and we look forward to his next endeavor.”

Here and Now, which starred Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter, stemmed from Ball’s close relationship with the previous HBO regimes. It was a rare miss for the Oscar and Emmy winner, creator of HBO’s signature series True Blood and Six Feet Under and executive producer of Cinemax’s biggest hit Banshee. In addition to a lukewarm reception from critics, Here and Now also drew modest viewership for an HBO drama series, averaging 300,000-400,000 Live+same day viewers for the premiere telecast.

‘Billions’ Renewed for Season 4 at Showtime

  • The Wrap
“Billions” has a small, but very important new number to count to, as the series was just picked up for a Season 4 at Showtime, the premium cabler’s president of programming, Gary Levine, announced Thursday.

The drama, led by Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis, is currently airing its third installment on Sundays at 10 p.m., but will see a move to 9 p.m. starting May 6. This will make it the lead-in for the second season premiere of Jim Carrey’s “I’m Dying Up Here.”

The Season 3 premiere of “Billions” was the series highest-rated ever, up 23 percent from last year’s debut. It currently ranks as Showtime’s No. 2 drama behind the critically-acclaimed “Homeland.” The series was created by Andrew Ross Sorkin, along with showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien, who also executive produce.

“‘Billions’ continues to build its audience as it explores the heights of power and wealth even as it plumbs the depths of the human psyche,” Levine said. “Brian and David are gifted, propulsive storytellers and we can’t wait to see where they and their extraordinary cast will take us in season four.”

The third season of “Billions” follows Chuck Rhoades (Giamatti) and Bobby Axelrod (Lewis) in a world that has shifted on its axis. Both men are still determined to destroy the other, but must also battle for their own survival amid new forces and powerful enemies. Wendy Rhoades (Maggie Siff), Chuck’s wife and Axe’s performance coach, is all in for both of them, an uneasy and dangerous position for her, and one that ultimately puts her to a decision that could alter the direction of her life irrevocably.

The drama also stars Malin Akerman, Toby Leonard Moore, David Costabile, Condola Rashad, Asia Kate Dillon and Jeffrey DeMunn.

The Efp at Hot Docs: European Docmakers Record New Cultural Shifts

The Efp at Hot Docs: European Docmakers Record New Cultural Shifts
The Changing Face of Europe, a program about to be launched at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto (April 26-May 6), presents 10 European documentaries that give a taste of Europe’s filmmaking output, and a glimpse at some of the forces shaping the continent.

Shane Smith, the festival’s director of programming, says that two of the themes it explore are people “grappling with the repercussions of history,” and how, when the blinders are off, folks realize “they can’t rely on what they are being told by their political leaders.”

“Rodeo,” which gets its international premiere at Hot Docs, centers on the chaos surrounding Estonia’s first free elections after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, and the rapid introduction of free-market economics that followed. The story, which draws on archival footage alongside recent interviews with the politicians at the center of events, unfolds like a conspiracy thriller.

Hey, Noah Schnapp (‘Stranger Things’): You could tie as the youngest dramatic actor ever nominated at Emmys

Hey, Noah Schnapp (‘Stranger Things’): You could tie as the youngest dramatic actor ever nominated at Emmys
History could be made at this year’s Emmys if 13-year-old Noah Schnapp earns a nomination as Best Drama Supporting Actor for Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” Schnapp, who wasn’t even alive in the 1980s when the sci-fi series takes place, would tie as the youngest male actor ever to be nominated for a drama series. Back in 1959 another 13-year-old, Johnny Crawford (“The Rifleman”), earned a nomination but lost. Two female starlets have taken home Emmy Awards — Roxana Zal for “Something About Amelia” (age 14 in 1984) and Kristy McNichol for “Family” — but Schnapp would make history for the boys if he were to win for his breakout role in “Stranger Things.”
