Luca Guadagnino to Direct Film Inspired by Classic Bob Dylan Album
Luca Guadagnino’s next project is inspired by one of Bob Dylan’s most iconic albums.

The “Suspiria” director is attached to direct a film based on Dylan’s 1975 album “Blood on the Tracks.” “The Fisher King” scribe Richard Lagravenese will write the screenplay, individuals with knowledge of the project confirmed to TheWrap.

The film is based on an idea by Rt Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira, who is producing with Guadagnino, reteaming with him after previously producing “Call Me By Your Name.” Rt’s Sophie Mas and Lourenço Sant’ Anna are executive producing alongside Marco Morabito.

‘NYPD Blue’ Follow-Up Series Lands Pilot Production Commitment at ABC
A new installment of “NYPD Blue” has scored a pilot production commitment at ABC, Variety has learned.

The new series follows Andy Sipowicz’s son, Theo, as he tries to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father’s murder. Original series writers and executive producers Matt Olmstead and Nick Wootton will write and executive produce the new show, with Jesse Bochco–son of “NYPD Blue” co-creator Steven Bocho–executive producing and directing. Dayna Bochco, Steven’s wife, will produce. ABC Studios will produce in association with 20th Century Fox Television.

Olmstead is repped by Wme and Bloom Hergott.

‘Orange Is the New Black’ to End With Season 7
Orange Is the New Black” is set to end after its upcoming seventh season on Netflix. The cast of the series broke the news in a video post on Wednesday, which can be viewed below.

Netflix had renewed the Lionsgate-produced series for three seasons ahead of the Season 4 premiere in 2016. As part of the deal, series showrunner Jenji Kohan will remain in that role through Season 7. The critically-acclaimed dramedy initially followed the inmates of Litchfield Minimum Security Prison, with Season 6 seeing many of the main cast move to the Maximum Security Prison often mentioned in the series.

The series stars Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba, Kate Mulgrew, Laura Prepon, Laverne Cox, Dascha Polanco, Danielle Brooks, Selenis Leyva, Taryn Manning, Yael Stone, Jackie Cruz, Lea DeLaria, Adrienne C. Moore, Elizabeth Rodriguez Michael Harney and Nick Sandow. Lionsgate produces the series for Netflix.

Legendary is in negotiations for Academy Award nominee Demián Bichir to join the upcoming “Godzilla vs Kong” film alongside previously announced cast Julian Dennison and Brian Tyree Henry.

Godzilla vs. Kong” is the fourth installment of the Legendary and Warner Bros. cinematic universe and is set to be released on May 22, 2020. “Godzilla” brought in $529 million globally after it was released in 2014. “Kong: Skull Island” was released March 10, 2017, and grossed more than $565 million worldwide. A sequel to Godzilla, titled “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” with Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown, will also be released next year.

Roseanne Barr Releases Official Statement on Being Killed Off ‘The Conners,’ Slams ABC for ‘Grim and Morbid’ Decision

ABC’s “Roseanne” spinoff “The Conners” kicked off its season premiere with confirmation that the character once played by Roseanne Barr had been killed off the series after suffering an opioid overdose from pills she was taking to treat a knee injury. Barr took to her Twitter page for an instant reaction to her character’s fate following the conclusion of the episode, defiantly tweeting, “I Ain’T Dead, Bitches!!!!” The actress then published a longer, more official statement along with her rabbi, Shmuley Boteach.

“While we wish the very best for the cast and production crew of ‘The Conners,’ all of whom are deeply dedicated to their craft and were Roseanne’s cherished colleagues, we regret that ABC chose to cancel Roseanne by killing off the Roseanne Conner character,” Barr and Boteach wrote. “That it was done through an opioid overdose lent an unnecessary grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show.

The Conners” premiere was the top-rated show of Tuesday night but debuted well below what the premiere of “Roseanne” drew earlier this year.

The series debuted sans Roseanne to a 2.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 10.5 million viewers. The one-hour “Roseanne” revival premiere back in March drew a 5.2 rating and 18.4 million viewers in Live+Same Day. The season finale drew a 2.5 and 10.6 million, while the season as a whole averaged a 3.5 and 13.5 million. As such, “The Conners” was on par with what the season finale of “Roseanne” drew.

Immediately after “The Conners,” the series premiere of “The Kids Are Alright” held onto just over half of its lead-in, nabbing a 1.4 and 6.6 million viewers. The season premiere of “Black-ish” followed with a 1.1 and 4.5 million, down in the demo from last season’s opener but about even in viewers. Jodie Whittaker’s ‘Doctor Who’ Debut Is Most-Watched Ever in U.K. for the Rebooted Series
The opening episode of the new season of “Doctor Who,” starring Jodie Whittaker as the first regular female time lord, scored a new audience high in the U.K. for the modern iteration of the long-running show. New 4-screen measurements by British TV ratings organization Barb, which include non-tv online viewing, showed that the total audience for the Oct. 7 season opener reached 10.9 million across all devices.

The result gives Whittaker, the 13th Doctor, the best introduction for any Doctor since the show returned after a long hiatus in 2005, when Christopher Eccleston’s debut scored a consolidated audience of 10.8 million. The figures also make “Doctor Who” the No. 1 drama launch of 2018 in the U.K. and the BBC’s biggest in more than a decade, surpassing its recent smash hit “Bodyguard,” which bowed in August.

China Release of Fan Bingbing-Bruce Willis Film ‘Unbreakable Spirit’ Is Scrapped
The planned theatrical release of big-budget Chinese war movie “Unbreakable Spirit,” has been scrapped following allegations of money laundering. The film had earlier been at the center of the tax avoidance allegations involving actress Fan Bingbing.

The film, previously known as “The Bombing,” was originally set for an August release. That was rescheduled to Oct. 26 after the Fan affair became major news. But Chinese media now report the release as cancelled.

Aside from Fan, the film has a stellar cast that includes Bruce Willis, Liu Ye, and Nicholas Tse. Director, Xiao Feng said the film had taken eight years to make.

“It is time to let it go,” Xiao Feng wrote on social media. “My sincere apologies to my crew, the distribution team, and all audiences who had high expectations of the film.” The film’s distributors, Beijing United Exhibition Partners, and Qi Tai Culture did not respond to Variety’s inquiries.

‘A Star Is Born’ Continues To Hit Box Office High Notes, Clears $100M In 12 Days
When a major studio’s awards contender shoots past the century mark this early in the fall, it’s something to celebrate, and Warner BrosBradley Cooper-Lady Gaga musical romance drama A Star Is Born has filled $100 million-plus worth of movie auditoriums in its first 12 days of domestic release.

Let’s face it, not all adult-oriented awards contenders are slam dunks at the box office, particularly when they are wide releases. Just ask Universal and DreamWorks, who hoped their astronaut drama First Man would launch to $20M in three days; it’s at $19.1M through five days. Quite often the better PR win is in a platform release: You celebrate your theater averages up front, and then, wow, the film has crossed over to bigger numbers later on in its run.

For the third midday to date in its run, A Star Is Born beat Venom in daily grosses — the pic did so last Thursday, on Monday and last night, edging out Tom Hardy’s fanged superhero $3.95M-$3.75M. Every studio depends on a huge opening-weekend gross for their event movies to survive, but sleeper movies, especially ones which continually draw out adult audiences — a crowd notorious for crawling to the multiplex — is pure manna from heaven. While Universal/ Miramax/ Blumhouse’s Halloween will soak up around $70M worth of business this weekend, Venom and A Star Is Born will continue to fight for second with around $18M-$20M. “A Star Is Born will continue to ease 30% every weekend in its run,” praised one rival studio executive about the pic’s longevity.

Yes, Sony’s Venom hit $100M in its first six days last week, but its commercial success after overcoming negative reviews can largely be attributed to being a long-awaited Marvel spinoff finally hitting the screen and clicking. Nice IP if you can get it.

But here we have A Star Is Born, the fourth remake of a classic property in an 81-year period, a movie by a first-time director in Cooper, coupled with ambitious dramatic performances that have paid off, not just for The Hangover actor, but in pop star Lady Gaga too. It’s a recipe that’s paying off. Note this movie could have been a very different one, with various directors having circled at various points in time, i.e., Joel Schumacher, Nick Cassavetes and Clint Eastwood, and stars including Will Smith and Tom Cruise, with Beyonce being a constant attachment throughout various iterations.

A Star Is Born through 12 days counts $101.4M to Venom‘s $148.9M. Versus other October hits, Warner Bros’ Gravity (final stateside gross $274M) hit $100M in nine days, 20th Century Fox’s The Martian (final domestic $228.4M) in 10, and Fox’s Gone Girl ($167.7M) in 16.

It’s fair to say, A Star Is Born is just getting warmed up.

The first trailer for Michael Chaves’ directorial debut, “The Curse of La Llorona,” has dropped — and it’s terrifying.

The trailer starts with a sort of ceremony where sage is burned around a woman. Linda Cardellini’s character interrupts the ceremony, and later in the night, she witnesses a crime scene that has taken the lives of many. The same woman from earlier tells her, “It’s your fault! I tried to stop her!”

La Llorona, or The Weeping Woman, is an apparition caught between Heaven and Hell after she drowned her children and threw herself into a river and wept in pain. Now, her tears are forever, which is how she got her name. And in “The Curse of La Llorona,” she haunts the night and the children in 1970s Los Angeles.

Netflix’s ‘Been So Long’ Gets U.K. Theatrical Release With Birds’ Eye View

Netflix’s “Been So Long” will receive a U.K. theatrical release as part of Birds’ Eye View’s Reclaim the Frame program. The film’s 10-theater tour will kick off during Black History Month with a preview event on Oct. 22 in London, which will be followed by a Q&A with director Tinge Krishnan, star Michaela Coel and other key members of the cast and crew. It will then tour the U.K. until mid-November; it launches globally on Netflix on Oct. 26.

Reclaim the Frame, which is supported by the British Film Institute’s Audience Fund, seeks to “grow the audience’s appetite for female-led films in the U.K.,” Birds’ Eye View said in a statement. It started as a pilot program, supporting four films in five cities over the summer. With the support of the BFI, Birds’ Eye View is extending the program for 18 months, supporting a further 12 films directed by women.
