MoviePass Parent Sets Spinoff Plans to Create ‘MoviePass Entertainment’

In a bid to save MoviePass, the struggling theater-subscription service’s parent — Helios & Matheson Analytics — announced a plan to spin off the division as a separate, publicly traded entity called MoviePass Entertainment Holdings.

Hmny said its board had preliminarily approved the spinoff plan that would combine MoviePass Inc. and other film related assets held by Hmny to create a “vertically integrated” entertainment company.

There’s no guarantee Helios & Matheson will be able to execute the spinoff. The company is under investigation by the New York Attorney General’s office into whether Hmny misled investors, and the company has been sued by investors alleging it deceived shareholders.

The proposed MoviePass Entertainment Holdings would include: the shares of common stock of MoviePass Inc. held by Hmny, which currently owns 92% of the outstanding shares; the membership interests of MoviePass Films, Hmny’s movie production company partnered with Emmett Furla Oasis Films; the membership interests of MoviePass Ventures,

Why ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ Strikes a Nerve

All homes filled with dysfunctional families are alike; each house cursed by ghostly manifestations of past and present sins is haunted in its own way. Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of a decrepit, rotting mansion populated by things that go bump in the night (and in the psyche) is considered by many to be the ne plus ultra of possessed-dwelling tales. The Guardian named it “the definitive haunted house story”; The New York Times declared that it had “the greatest opening paragraph in the history of horror”; no less than Stephen King,

‘Roma’ Actress Yalitza Aparicio on the Challenge of Playing Alfonso Cuarón’s Real-Life Nanny
When Alfonso Cuarón began casting the role of Cleo, a domestic worker closely based on Liboria “Libo” Rodríguez, who raised him from the time he was 9 months old, the director embarked on an exhaustive search throughout Mexico. He eventually found the woman to play Cleo — 24-year-old schoolteacher Yalitza Aparicio — in the southern town of Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, the same state where Rodríguez grew up. It was the first film for Aparicio, who spoke to Variety about getting the chance to star in a movie and accompany it all over the world.

Did you ever give any thought to being an actress before “Roma”?

No. I never imagined being a part of a project like this.

What was your first reaction when Alfonso Cuarón told you he wanted you to star in his film?

There were mixed feelings. I couldn’t believe it. After every screen test, my family would ask how it went,

When Washington state Rep. Matt Shea looks out before him, he sees a mostly male crowd in militia T-shirts smiling back. Gathered across an expanse of suburban grass, they hold yellow Don’t Tread on Me flags. A handful carry Ar-15s and are dressed in tactical camouflage vests loaded up with ammunition. It’s a hot August Saturday at a public park in Spokane, Washington. Wildfire smoke blurs the sun.

“I’m gonna speak from the heart today,” Shea says into the microphone.

Alfonso Cuarón on the Painful and Poetic Backstory Behind ‘Roma’

Alfonso Cuarón on the Painful and Poetic Backstory Behind ‘Roma’
More than a decade ago, shortly after wrapping his 2006 dystopian drama “Children of Men,” director Alfonso Cuarón seized upon the idea of making an autobiographical film based on his childhood. Previously, he had worked on various screenplays that obliquely dealt with his upbringing through stories of families falling apart or the absence of a father — tribulations that he himself had endured at a young age. But it took some time before the specificity of his memories would finally coalesce in his latest movie, “Roma,” re-created with painstaking emotion, detail and precision.

“I think I wanted to understand, to put the pieces together,” Cuarón says, speaking to Variety on a whirlwind day of promoting the film ahead of its New York Film Festival premiere. “[Jorge Luis] Borges talks about how memory is an opaque, shattered mirror, but I see it more as a crack in the wall. The crack is whatever pain happened in the past.

Turkish President Calls Khashoggi Death ‘Premeditated Murder,’ Challenging Saudi Account

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan offered his strongest denunciation yet of Saudi Arabia and what he says was their role in the death of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

The Turkish strongman has spent the last two weeks leaking ever more gruesome details of the killing which has played a significant role in driving the story forward.
