Dolly Parton has livened up the Oscar trail this year with her new song “Girl in the Movies,” from the Netflix movie “Dumplin.'” Following a live performance of the song for a select industry crowd (mostly journalists and Golden Globes voters) at the Four Seasons on Monday, the recording icon stopped by a screening of the film with “Dumplin'” star Danielle Macdonald to field questions from the audience.

When told the crowd was primarily Screen Actors Guild Awards voters, Parton gestured to her trademark curves and quipped, “I took care of all my saggin’!”

Why the Weekend Before Halloween Is a Dead Zone for Movies

As usual, the weekend before Halloween is looking a lot like a graveyard when it comes to major movie releases. Though film releases aren’t crammed into just a few busy periods, as they were a few years ago, studios still strive to avoid the dead weekends on the calendar.

In the case of the pre-Halloween period, moviegoers are preoccupied with the coming holiday, and many parties are scheduled on weekends even when the holiday falls during the week. Plus, the surfeit of horror movies earlier in the month typically play through Halloween for those still looking for chills.

Labor Day weekend is an even worse period for the movie business, with family cookouts and back-to-school prep taking over moviegoers’ attention after the early and midsummer rush of blockbusters peter out.

Though the North American box office is currently leading last year by nearly 10%, this weekend’s openings are a

‘The Tribe’ Director to Helm ‘Tiger’ For Focus (Exclusive)

‘The Tribe’ Director to Helm ‘Tiger’ For Focus (Exclusive)
Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi has come on to direct “Tiger” for Focus, sources tell Variety.

Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa and Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner’s Plan B are producing.

The pic, based on the 2010 non-fiction book by John Vaillant, takes place on the Siberian plain, where human development is encroaching on the tigers’ habitat — and one tiger turns on the intruders. With townspeople being tracked and hunted with an almost supernatural power, a conservationist game warden must face down the tiger. It is a fight that only one of them can win.

Focus acquired the book in 2010 and at one point the project was eyed as a potential acting vehicle for Pitt and directing job for Aronofsky. In the end the two have decided to stay on as producers and allow Slaboshpystskyi step in to direct.

The film had been in development limbo, but a recent presentation got the studio and

That House in ‘Beautiful Boy’ Is the Same Place Zoë Kravitz Lived in ‘Big Little Lies’
If you went to see “Beautiful Boy and thought the spacious house Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell live in looks familiar, there’s a great reason for that: you’ve seen it before on ‘Big Little Lies.”

In an interview with Vulture, “Beautiful Boy” production designer Ethan Tobman confirmed that the house featured in the film is the same as the open Monterey home Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) and Nathan (James Tupper) occupy in HBO’s hit miniseries.

Beautiful Boy” tracks the relationship between David Sheff (Carell) and his son, Nic (Chalamet), as Nic struggles with addiction. And the house was chosen with that dynamic in mind. “The goal was to accurately portray their family dynamic, and their architectural choices, but also the feeling we had when we were there,” Tobman told Vulture. “This was a home we would have loved to have grown up in, progressive, artistic, encouraging self-expression, intellect,

From Blogger to ‘Halloween’ Producer: How Ryan Turek Got a Stab at This Year’s Biggest Horror Hit
Years before he produced “Halloween,” this year’s biggest horror hit, Ryan Turek was nowhere close to developing films: He was commenting on horror blogs’ message boards.

Turek moved to Los Angeles in 1999 with dreams of becoming a screenwriter. He never imagined masterminding a “Halloween” film that has grossed $76 million its opening weekend, breaking records in the process.

It’s a story of the unconventional way Blumhouse does business — and harnessing the power and passion of fandom into box-office dominance. The company hired Turek based on his passion, obsession and expertise on the horror genre, and proved they’d rather listen to a true fan than an executive who might not know horror.
