Idris Elba Boarding Universal-Working Title’s ‘Cats’ As Macavity
Idris Elba is in final talks to join Tom Hooper’s feature adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical Cats. We hear Elba is playing famed feline Macavity.

The Golden Globe and two-time SAG Award winner joins Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Laurie Davidson, and Mette Towley. The pic is currently in pre-production.

Macavity is the only real villain in the musical who kidnaps Old Deuteronomy, the Jellicle leader, and attempts to abduct Demeter, one of two cats who sings about him. The character was originally portrayed by Richard Pettyfer in the original West End production, and by Kenneth Ard in the Broadway production. Macavity also has a hypnotic power. In act two, there are two songs about him: “Macavity: The Mystery Cat” sung by Demeter, Bombalurina, and female feline back-up and “Macavity Fight” performed by Macavity, Demeter, Munkustrap, and Alonzo.

Elba is currently filming Fast and Furious

‘Grimm’ Spinoff With A Female Lead In Works At NBC
Grimm is eying a comeback. NBC is developing a spinoff from the supernatural series, which bowed out last year after six seasons. Like the original, the offshoot hails from Universal TV and Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner’s studio-based Hazy Mills Prods.

Written by Melissa Glenn (Marvel’s Iron Fist), the untitled spinoff, I hear, will center on a female Grimm. Per NBC, building off the mythology of the original series, the new show will feature returning fan favorites while also introducing new characters, new dangers and epic new mysteries. I hear no actors are currently attached but the idea is for the offshoot to feature some original cast members, regular or recurring.

Glenn executive produces with Hazy Mills’ Hayes and Milliner. Grimm co-creators/showrunners David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf will serve as consulting producers.

The original series followed Portland Homicide detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli), who discovered he is a Grimm,

This Canadian Couple Went All ‘Alien’ for Their Maternity Photo Shoot

  • The Wrap
Expectant father Todd Cameron took to Facebook this month to share seemingly conventional maternity photos with his partner Nicole. The Canadian couple, surrounded by pumpkins, took your typical maternity poses — from a sweet, standing embrace to a sitting belly hug.

However, as photos in the post progress, the shoot takes an extraterrestrial twist. Nicole laid on her back with a bloodied “Alien” franchise-style Chestburster emerging from her chest. Splattered in fake blood, Todd chased after the wriggling Xenomorph.

Hear Thom Yorke’s Chilly New Song for Greenpeace
Thom Yorke throws his support behind an entire continent in his new song, “Hands Off the Antarctic.” The Radiohead frontman penned the shimmery, four-minute electronic instrumental for the environmental advocacy organization Greenpeace, who are running a “Help Protect the Antarctic Ocean” campaign. As his synthesizer blends blips with chilly, glacial washes of sound, a video for the song shows crisp, black-and-white footage of the continent taken from Greenpeace’s ship, Arctic Sunrise. Yorke premiered the song in London with a projection of the video on the city’s Marble Arch.

Box Office: ‘Halloween’ to Carve Out Huge $65 Million-Plus Debut

The October box office has been light on the tricks and heavy on the treats.

“Halloween” should keep powering the domestic market as Universal’s R-rated slasher film eyes a massive opening in the $57 million to $65 million range. The studio is cautiously anticipating a $50 million bow, though some industry analysts think it could rocket past $70 million when it debuts in 3,928 theaters. “Halloween” is also releasing in 21 international territories this weekend.

Even the lower part of that range would easily shatter records for the best launch in the “Halloween” franchise. The 2007 reboot holds that distinction now with $26 million. “Halloween” also looks to notch one of the best starts for an R-rated horror film, joining the company of “It” ($123 million), “Hannibal ($58 million), and “The Nun” ($53 million). Given its $10 million production budget, the scary sequel is on track to be hugely profitable.

Tribeca’s 2018 Through Her Lens Program Kicks Off on Political Note

There was perhaps no more fitting kickoff to Tribeca’s 2018 Through Her Lens program than executive chair Jane Rosenthal‘s blunt greeting: “Hello to all you impolite, arrogant women!”

Despite the elegant trappings of New York City’s Locanda Verde restaurant and a co-sponsorship with Chanel, the assembled group of women filmmakers, writers, producers, and actors at the program’s opening luncheon was a frank and lively one. A year after the Harvey Weinstein allegations first dropped and shook Hollywood to its core, such female-driven gatherings have taken on new urgency, with a sharper focus on practical solutions rather than the usual sweeping declarations of the importance of diversity.

Tribeca’s Through Her Lens program, now in its fourth year, collaborates with Pulse Films to select five teams of female filmmakers to participate in a three-day workshop that includes classes, review sessions, potential prize money to further their projects, and

When she woke up later that morning, her tweet was all over the news.

“It was characterized as racist, which just made my stomach fall to my feet,” Barr said. “And then the network called and said, what possible excuse could you have for something you’ve done which is unforgivable and some other word that I can’t remember.”
