Jake Gyllenhaal Is in Talks to Play the Spider-Man Sequel's Big Villain, Mysterio

Jake Gyllenhaal Is in Talks to Play the Spider-Man Sequel's Big Villain, Mysterio
The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is still in the early stages of production, but it might have already landed one of the movie's most important roles: its villain. None other than Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly in talks to play Mysterio, a classic nemesis for the titular web-slinger from the comics.

Mysterio, the brainchild of Marvel legends Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, made his big debut in the comics in 1964. The supervillain's alter-ego is Quentin Beck, a stunt man with an extraordinary talent for special effects and illusions, which he uses to pull off major crimes. Those abilities, partnered with his skills as an amateur chemist, help him take on Spider-Man a number of times.

While Gyllenhaal's casting isn't official just yet, we can totally see the Stronger actor playing a bad guy. He'd be joined by Tom Holland, who will be reprising his role as Peter Parker, as well as Zendaya as MJ.

‘Westworld': Shogun World Reflects Ties Between Samurai Films and Westerns
This week’s episode of “Westworld” finally took us to Shogun World, where Maeve discovered Akane, her geisha counterpart.

“We may have cribbed a little bit from Westworld,” admitted buffoonish programmer Lee Sizemore. “You try writing 300 stories in three weeks!”

Don’t worry, Lee: Westerns and samurai films did plenty of cribbing from each other, too. With Shogun World, “Westworld” creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan winked at decades of cultural crossover between Western directors like John Sturges and samurai auteurs like Akira Kurosawa.

Some of the most famous Westerns ever made were adaptations of samurai films: Sturges’ “The Magnificent Seven” was Kurosawa’s “The Seven Samurai” with gunslingers instead of ronin. Clint Eastwood’s famous “Man With No Name” in Sergio Leone’s “A Fistful of Dollars” is based on the

10 Westerns Inspired by Samurai Movies, from ‘The Magnificent Seven’ to ‘A Fistful of Dollars’ (Photos)
We finally got a glimpse of “Shogun World” in the latest episode of “Westworld,” and the idea to mash up the two universes isn’t just a coincidence. There’s a long history of Westerns borrowing from samurai cinema and the other way around, with Akira Kurosawa studying the work of John Ford, which in turn led to many of Kurosawa’s movies to be remade as Spaghetti Westerns. The cowboy and the samurai are each lone wanderers in a lawless world, so it makes sense that the themes would crossover. Here are 10 instances in which the West met the East.

The Magnificent Seven” (1960) and “Seven Samurai” (1954)

Akira Kurosawa’s landmark film “Seven Samurai” was highly influential on modern action cinema, but its most direct descendant was John Sturges’s “The Magnificent Seven,” starring Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and Eli Wallach. The film is a remake but represents

From Homeless to Netflix: The Long Journey of ‘Godless,’ Scott Frank’s Feminist Western

From Homeless to Netflix: The Long Journey of ‘Godless,’ Scott Frank’s Feminist Western
Godless” is the smart western that nobody wanted when it was a two-hour movie. Scott Frank (“A Walk Among the Tombstones”) spent 12 years hearing “no” to his drama about a small town that lost all of its men to a mining disaster. However, once it became a limited series, Netflix jumped at the opportunity.

Frank has long been known as a hot screenwriter, in a career that stretches from Kenneth Branaugh’s “Dead Again” in 1991 to Oscar-nominated turns for Steven Soderbergh’s 1999 “Out of Sight” and last year’s “Logan.” However, he never expected to become the showrunner of a sprawling TV series.

“I could watch eight movies all day for the price of a ticket and candy,” said Frank. As a kid growing up in northern California in the 1960s, his mom would drop him off at the theater for marathon movie sessions. That’s where he discovered Sergio Leone

Charlie Day: ‘Always Sunny’ Aiming for 15 Seasons, Fans ‘Should Feel Hopeful’ for Glenn Howerton’s Return (Exclusive)
Charlie Day says he and the other stars of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” are hoping the show will go for 15 seasons, which would make it the longest-running live-action sitcom in history. He also said “fans should feel hopeful” they’ll see more of Glenn Howerton’s Dennis, despite his goodbye at the end of Season 12.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming 2': Here’s What You Need to Know About Mysterio, Spidey’s Next Villain

The bad guys of Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery often tend to be less like rampaging, world-dominating superpeople, and more like lower-level criminals who develop grudges against Spider-Man for doing his job. That’s usually the case with Mysterio, a caped bad guy who wears a glass ball on his head and uses illusions and special effects for his villainy.

We know that Mysterio is due to face Spider-Man in the next movie with the Marvel Comics hero, an as-yet untitled sequel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe entry, “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” We also know the role of Mysterio, also known as Quentin Beck, has gone to Jake Gyllenhaal.

So who is Mysterio and what is his deal? He’s a bad guy with ties to Vulture, Michael Keaton’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” villain, and he likes to try to make Spider-Man believe he’s going insane. So this should be interesting.
