‘Solo’ Heads to Opening Below Forecasts Over Memorial Day Weekend

‘Solo’ Heads to Opening Below Forecasts Over Memorial Day Weekend
Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is flying well below forecasts, heading for a Memorial Day weekend launch of around $110 million domestically, early estimates showed Friday.

The four-day figure is significantly under the studio’s recent estimates in the $130 million to $150 million range at 4,380 North American locations. First-day grosses are coming in at about $32 million — including $14.1 million from previews, which set a Memorial Day weekend record.

Should the holiday estimate hold for “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” it will raise questions about franchise fatigue and Disney’s strategy of opening the tentpole a mere five months after “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” debuted on Dec. 16. “The Last Jedi” debuted impressively with $220 million in North America, and went on to earn $620 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide.

“Solo” is the 10th Star Wars movie and fourth from Disney in less than four years. Critics have been mostly positive with a current 70% “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes for “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

At $110 million, “Solo” would be only the sixth-biggest film to open on Memorial Day weekend. Disney’s 2007 release “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” currently holds that title with $139.8 million, followed by “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “Fast and Furious 6,” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

As fallout from a May 23 New York Times interview that resulted in apologies from three “Arrested Development” actors continues, Netflix has canceled the cast’s promotional trip across the pond. “We had planned to have most of the ‘Arrested Development’ cast in London this week to support the launch of the new season and meet fans,” said the studio in a statement reported by Deadline and confirmed by IndieWire. “At this time we have decided not to move ahead with promotional activity in the U.K. but hope to bring the cast back at another time.”

In late 2017, two accusations of sexual harassment from the set of Amazon’s “Transparent

During a visit to “Ellen” on May 24, Poehler confirmed she’s “absolutely” on board with the idea of another season of “Parks and Recreation,” and the comedian even added that she’s certain her co-stars “would all do” more episodes and return to Pawnee, Indiana.

“Absolutely,” Poehler said when asked about a potential revival. “I know, I’ll speak for everybody and say we would all do it. I think we’d all do it someday. It would be amazing.”

Poehler was joined on “Ellen” by her “Parks and Recreation” co-star Nick Offerman, who also expressed interest in stepping back into the shoes of Ron Swanson. “Amy’s the boss of the show,” Offerman said, “so she can speak for everybody.”

Bond 25 Director Confirmed as Danny Boyle, Production With Daniel Craig Begins December 2018
It’s official: MGM and Annapurna will team up to distribute Bond 25 in the U.S. on November 8, 2019. Universal Pictures has won the lucrative rights to handle the film’s international distribution. Sony previously handled Bond distribtion, but it’s rights to the franchise expired after “Spectre” and set off a bidding war among studios. The next 007 installment will open in the U.K. first on October 25, 2019.

In addition to the confirmed distributors, 007 studio Eon Productions has also confirmed Danny Boyle will direct Bond 25, which will once again star Daniel Craig as the world’s most famous spy. Boyle has been a contender for several months now, with his hiring dependent on whether or not 007 producers Michael G. Harvey Weinstein Arrested on Sex Crime Charges in New York City

Harvey Weinstein Arrested on Sex Crime Charges in New York City
Harvey Weinstein was arrested on Friday in New York City on charges of rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct stemming from a months-long investigation by the NYPD into accusations by multiple women.

Though the Hollywood mogul has been accused of misconduct by more than 80 women, the criminal charges by New York prosecutors stem from the accusations of two women. The first-degree criminal sex act charge comes from a case involving aspiring actress Lucia Evans, according to law enforcement officials. We do not yet know who filed the complaint that led to the rape charge.

Weinstein will be released on $1 million bail. He will have to wear a monitoring device around his ankle, and is expected to surrender his passport and have restrictions placed on his travel.

Benjamin Brafman, Weinstein’s lawyer, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A rep for Weinstein said he sought

Arrested Development: Jason Bateman Apologizes For Excusing Jeffrey Tambor's Abusive Behavior

Arrested Development: Jason Bateman Apologizes For Excusing Jeffrey Tambor's Abusive Behavior
In a long-ranging interview with The New York Times, most of the male Arrested Development cast members repeatedly shoved their feet in their mouths when the conversation turned to the sexual assault allegations against Jeffrey Tambor, who was also present at the interview. Jason Bateman, David Cross, and Tony Hale attempted to excuse his abusive onset behavior over and over again throughout the interview, even when Jessica Walter - who plays the delightfully sardonic Bluth matriarch Lucille - broke down in tears recounting a past incident with Tambor.

When Walter began speaking about it, Bateman immediately tried to brush it off, saying that the cast "is a family and families, you know, have love, laughter, arguments - again, not to belittle it, but a lot of stuff happens in 15 years."

Walter, still crying, responded: "Let me just say one thing that I just realized in this conversation. I have to

Cannes Film Review: ‘The Dead and the Others’

An indigenous teenager falls ill when he resists tribal duties and his destiny as a shaman in João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora’s ethnographically sincere “The Dead and the Others.” Handsomely shot on 16mm to draw out the region’s warm organic tones, the film is an admirable, often fascinating fictionalized portrait of the Krahô people of Brazil’s north-central state of Tocantins and their fight to preserve traditions too easily watered-down by contact with the outside world. A major problem however is that the directors, who don’t speak Krahô, had their nonprofessional performers improvise their lines, giving far more space to exposition than their amateur acting can bear. Less dialogue and greater reliance on conveying information visually would have distinguished “The Dead” from other indigenous fiction, though Un Certain Regard’s special jury prize ensures a modest festival life.

Fifteen-year-old Ihjãc (Henrique Ihjãc Krahô) hears his deceased

Transilvania Film Festival Raises Curtain on 17th Edition

Transilvania Film Festival Raises Curtain on 17th Edition
Cluj, Romania — The off-beat, the avant garde and the boundary-defying take center stage at the Transilvania Intl. Film Festival, which kicked off Friday night with a soggy start to the 17th edition.

Unspooling over 10 days in the lively medieval city of Cluj, a festival known for bold and provocative programming will feature 12 films in competition for the Transilvania Trophy, starting with fest opener “Foxtrot,” Israeli director Samuel Maoz’s Oscar-shortlisted portrait of a grieving family who lose their soldier son in the line of duty.

Though evening showers threatened to turn the night into a washout, the skies cleared over the historic Piata Unirii (Union Square), where Maoz’s controversial film, which won the Silver Lion in Venice last year, played to a damp but upbeat crowd.

With lightning flashing over what the Israeli helmer described as “the biggest screen and the biggest screening my film has ever had,” Maoz

How the 2018 Emmys Actor and Actress Hopefuls Beat Hollywood’s Expectations (Video)

How the 2018 Emmys Actor and Actress Hopefuls Beat Hollywood’s Expectations (Video)
At first glance, there’s no similarities between “Claws,” “Legion,” “The Alienist,” “This Is Us” and “Black Mirror” episode “U.S.S. Callister.” The challenges the actors and showrunners faced on these dramas were often miles apart, despite most of them being lumped into the same Emmys categories.

But in talking at TheWrap’s Emmy actors panel at the Landmark Theatres in Los Angeles Thursday night, Niecy Nash, Aubrey Plaza, Daniel Brühl, Chrissy Metz and Cristin Milioti each explained why these dramatic roles pushed Hollywood to think of them differently.

“The industry was like, ‘No, pumpkin, you’re funny, and that’s what you do.’ It took me a very long time to invite them to see me how I saw myself,” “Claws” star Niecy Nash told TheWrap’s Steve Pond. “I couldn’t get into certain rooms because they were like, ‘oh no, we know what she does.'

Stx Fires Back at Sesame Workshop’s ‘Ejaculating Puppets’ Lawsuit With a Message From ‘Fred, Esq.’

Stx Entertainment isn’t playing around in its response to Sesame Workshop’s lawsuit over its promotion for the upcoming Melissa McCarthy film “The Happytime Murders.”

Ok, so maybe they’re playing around a little bit.

On Friday, a day after Sesame Workshop filed its trademark suit, alleging that the film’s trailer “tarnishes” the Sesame brand with depictions of “explicit, profane, drug-using, misogynistic, violent, copulating, and even ejaculating puppets,” Stx responded with a statement from its representative in the matter, one Fred, Esq.

Netflix ‘Evil Genius’ Directors Weigh In: Was Murdered Pizza Guy in on the Heist?
(Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you haven’t watched “Evil Genius”)

While Netflix’s “Evil Genius” ends with unanswered questions, directors Barbara Schroeder and Trey Borzillieri have clear thoughts on who they think was behind the big heist, and who wasn’t.

Evil Genius” tells the story of the “pizza bomber heist” and the murder of Brian Wells in 2003. The 46-year-old from Erie, Pennsylvania, was a pizza delivery man who got involved in a bank robbery that included a scavenger hunt and a homemade bomb strapped around his neck. When he was arrested after robbing the bank, the bomb went off and killed Wells.

In the 15 years since the incident happened, there was been debate over Wells’ involvement and who the real mastermind was — or who the masterminds were — in the crime. Prosecutors claimed Wells was in on the heist but thought the bomb was a decoy.

TV Review: ‘Arrested Development’ Season 5 on Netflix

There’s something perfect about the fact that season 5 of “Arrested Development” picks up almost immediately where season 4 left off as if no time has passed at all, alternately ignoring and winking at the fact that its cast has aged. After all (narrator voice): it’s “Arrested Development.”

Opting to stick with the still unfolding season 4 stories instead of flashing right by them is a gutsy choice that mostly pays off. Fans will be relieved to know that season 5 makes a point of bringing the Bluth family back together after obvious scheduling issues with the cast for season 4 – the

‘Lucifer’ Star Kevin Alejandro Tells Us About Those 2 ‘Bonus’ Episodes and Where #SaveLucifer Stands
(Spoiler alert: Please do not read ahead unless you’ve seen the series finale — or possibly just Season 3 finale — of “Lucifer.”)

Kevin Alejandro was not prepared for “Lucifer” to get canceled. And neither was anyone else on the cast of the recently-axed Fox series — let alone its fans. So a period of mourning has sent in for those who want to see the devil rise from cancellation hell.

Luckily, there are two things that have Alejandro — who plays Detective Dan “Douche” Espinoza on the dramedy — in high spirits. First, it looks like the fan campaign #SaveLucifer — led by Lucifer (Tom Ellis) himself — might actually be working. And second, Alejandro will be making his TV directorial debut Monday night when two “bonus” episodes of “Lucifer” air on Fox.
