‘Westworld’s’ Shannon Woodward to Produce Series Based on Nxivm Sex Cult

‘Westworld’s’ Shannon Woodward to Produce Series Based on Nxivm Sex Cult
Annapurna Television is developing a scripted series inspired by the alleged sex cult NXIVM, with “Westworld” actress Shannon Woodward attached to executive produce.

The potential series is based on the New York Times report about the group published last year. The report, authored by Barry Meier, featured interviews with multiple women who said the purported self-help group, led by Keith Raniere, recruited women to serve as “slaves” and branded them with Raniere’s initials.

No writer is attached yet, but Woodward will executive produce along with Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle and Susan Goldberg of Annapurna.

The group has come under renewed interest in recent weeks, after Raniere was arrested in Mexico last month on charges of sex trafficking. “Smallville” star Allison Mack, who was identified as Raniere’s top lieutenant in the Times report, was arrested last week.

Alan Ball’s Drama ‘Here and Now’ Canceled By HBO After One Season
Exclusive: HBO is not renewing Alan Ball’s family drama Here and Now for a second season. The news comes 10 days after the series’ Season 1 finale.

“After careful consideration we have decided not to move forward with a second season of Here and Now,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. “We thank Alan for his dedication to innovative storytelling, and we look forward to his next endeavor.”

Here and Now, which starred Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter, stemmed from Ball’s close relationship with the previous HBO regimes. It was a rare miss for the Oscar and Emmy winner, creator of HBO’s signature series True Blood and Six Feet Under and executive producer of Cinemax’s biggest hit Banshee. In addition to a lukewarm reception from critics, Here and Now also drew modest viewership for an HBO drama series, averaging 300,000-400,000 Live+same day viewers for the premiere telecast.

Lauren Cohan to Return to ‘The Walking Dead’ for Season 9
Even after the final episode of AMC's The Walking Dead Season 8 aired, it was unclear if one of the top-rated drama's major characters would be returning for the next season. Maggie Greene, played by Lauren Cohan, has become an emotional, practical, and increasingly powerful player in the Walking Dead narrative, so it was understandable that fans were concerned for Cohan's well-being and Maggie's part to play in the story to come. The uncertainty, however, had nothing to do with plot points, Walkers, or the savage Saviors at all but rather the mundane complications …

According to a complaint in New Jersey federal court, the payment went to the DeLorean Motor Company.

Film Review: ‘Goran’

“Worst birthday ever” doesn’t begin to cover the magnitude of what befalls our protagonist in “Goran.” Fast-rising Croatian helmer Nevio Marasovic’s third professional feature — he’s made a well-received fourth, “Comic Sans,” since this one premiered at Fantasia nearly two years ago — is not so much a psychological thriller as an emotional horror movie, in which the title character’s fortunes go from bad to unimaginably worse. Holding its poker face to the bitter end, this is a black comedy whose slow burn nonetheless eventually leaves no one unconsumed by the flame of cruel fate. Uncork’d is giving it a limited U.S. theatrical release starting this Friday.

Goran (Franjo Dijak) is an uncomplicated guy who enjoys drinking (maybe a little too often), driving a cab (in a podunk town where it’s scarcely needed) and hanging out with bestie Slavko (Goran Bogdan) at a cabin where

Tiffany Haddish Cracks up CinemaCon for ‘Night School,’ Tyler Perry Movie

Tiffany Haddish Cracks up CinemaCon for ‘Night School,’ Tyler Perry Movie
Rising star Tiffany Haddish managed to deliver big laughs at a pair of CinemaCon presentations Wednesday — for Universal’s “Night School” and for Paramount’s untitled Tyler Perry comedy.

Haddish, who broke out in “Girls Trip” last year, opened the Universal presentation at Caesars Palace in the morning with co-star Kevin Hart. The duo touted “Night School,” in which Haddish plays a no-nonsense teacher heading adult instruction with Hart as a particularly hapless student.

She’s also joining Hart in the voice cast of Universal’s “Secret Life of Pets 2,” which prompted an amusing exchange over the pronunciation of the shih tzu breed of dogs. “Night School” will open on Sept. 28; “The Secret Life of Pets 2” is due out on June 7, 2019.

Haddish returned in the afternoon for the Paramount presentation, this time to promote Perry’s comedy — which has been referred to as “The List.” Haddish will portray a

Tom Cruise Makes Studio Chiefs Afraid to Watch Dailies

Paramount saved its biggest star for last at Wednesday’s CinemaCon presentation. Pioneer of the Year Tom Cruise, with director Chris McQuarrie and co-stars Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett, and Henry Cavill, walked theater owners behind the scenes of his latest outrageous “Mission: Impossible” stunt. “I’m scared to see the dailies,” admitted new chairman Jim Gianopulos.

For “M:i – Fallout” (July 27), besides various hair-raising helicopter and motorcycle stunts in the streets of Paris including a rapid swing against traffic around the Arc de Triomphe — Cruise wanted to perform a high-altitude skydive from over 25,000 feet. So he and his director devised a sequence that was “physically possible without killing him,” said McQuarrie.

It took a year and building the largest wind tunnel in the world to prepare. The production designer came up with a special glass helmet with oxygen and lights so you could see the movie star who was performing skydives
