Ed Catmull, a longtime leader at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation, has announced plans to retire.

Pixar president Jim Morris and Walt Disney Animation Studios president Andrew Millstein will continue in his place, as the 73-year-old transitions to an advisory role to end in summer 2019.

Morris and Millstein will report up to Walt Disney Studios President Alan Bergman and the Pixar-Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officers Pete Docter and Jennifer Lee. All roads lead to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn.

Jean-Marc Vallee to Direct John Lennon-Yoko Ono Movie for Universal
Jean-Marc Vallee is set to direct a film about John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Universal Pictures is in negotiations to option Anthony McCarten’s script with Michael De Luca Productions and Immersive Pictures producing. News first emerged in February that De Luca was collaborating with Yoko Ono for an untitled drama about Ono and her relationship with Lennon.

Vallee is attached to direct and edit. He will also rewrite the screenplay alongside McCarten. Ono will produce with De Luca, Immersive Pictures’ Josh Bratman, and McCarten. Vallee and his producing partner Nathan Ross will also produce through their production company, Crazyrose. Bruce Kaufman of Wood Hollow Pictures will executive produce.

Ono and Lennon met in 1966 at a London art gallery, where Ono was showing abstract art while the Beatles were four years into superstardom. Lennon asked Ono about her “Painting to Hammer a Nail In” piece, and if he could hammer a nail into the painting.

Disney is exploring a sixth iteration of its Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and has met with the Deadpool writing team of Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick about the pic, a source tells Variety.

Disney has no comment and no deal is in place yet. The five previous Pirates movies hauled $1.5 billion domestically and $3.07 billion internationally, with the North American market representing a progressively smaller share. The domestic total for 2017’s “Dead Men Tell No Tales” hit $172 million, while foreign markets delivered $622 million.

As their first artist, the founders have signed actor and musician Ben Dickey, who portrayed singer Blaze Foley in Blaze, the critically acclaimed, Hawke-directed biopic released earlier this year. Black served as an executive producer on the film and Sexton appeared as another Texas music legend, Townes Van Zandt.

Toby and Kate are finally expecting!

Tuesday’s episode of “This Is Us” ended with that big revelation for the audience, and another big — and scary — one for Kate: her hubby has slipped back into depression after going off his meds for weeks to try and ensure his sperm was unaffected, so she would have a better chance of getting pregnant through their IVF treatments.

But based on how the Season 3 installment, titled “Toby” — an origin story for Chris Sullivan’s character and his years of struggling with depression — closed with Kate calling up Tobias’ doctor, we are optimistic Chrissy Metz’ Katy girl is going to help her partner get the help he needs while she sets out on her pregnancy journey.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Sees Mixed Reviews as Critics Praise Rami Malek
It turns out if anybody can find them somebody to love in the biographical musical film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” it’s star Rami Malek and his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Across the board, critics have praised Malek’s performance as one of the year’s best, while panning some of the film’s otherwise lackluster qualities, like its sanitization of Mercury’s sexuality and failure to live up to iconic band’s electrifying essence. Reviewers also noted the film’s behind-the-scenes tumult, with Malek replacing Sacha Baron Cohen, and Dexter Fletcher taking over as director. Bryan Singer, who was fired midway into the shoot after leaving the production without authorization, still retains the directing credit.

Film News Roundup: Sony Moves ‘Grudge’ Reboot Up Two Months

In today’s film news roundup, Sony moves “Grudge” into the “Toy Story 4” slot, “Who Will Write Our History” gets distribution and 60 companies from 15 countries will be making their Afm debut as market exhibitors.

Release Date

Sony Pictures has moved “Grudge,” its reboot of the 2004 supernatural thriller “The Grudge,” forward to June 21 from Aug. 16.

The film stars Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver. The 2004 film was a remake of the 2002 Japanese film “Jun-On: The Grudge,” which centers on a curse created when someone dies in rage or sorrow.

Grudge” is directed by Nicolas Pesce for Ghost House and Good Universe. Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce for Ghost House with Nathan Kahane and Erin Westerman executive producing for Good Universe alongside Schuyler Weiss, Roy Lee, Doug Davison, John Middleton, and Andrew Pfeffer.

Grudge” becomes the second title dated for June 21, joining Pixar-Disney’s “Toy Story 4.

XXXTentacion Admitted to Domestic Abuse in Secret Tape

Late rapper XXXTentacion reportedly admitted to domestic abuse and other violent acts in a secret recording, Pitchfork reports. The audio recording was obtained via the Miami-Date County state attorney’s office.

Prior to his death this past June, XXXTentacion – real name Jahseh Onfroy – was facing several charges related to a 2016 incident in which he allegedly beat his pregnant ex-girlfriend. Though the rapper pleaded not guilty and maintained his innocence, the Miami-Dade attorney’s office said that both the prosecution and defense considered the audio recording a confession.

Jim Sturgess has been cast in Apple’s upcoming drama based on the life of 11-year-old investigative journalist Hilde Lysiak, the tech giant announced Tuesday.

Led by “The Florida Project” breakout Brooklynn Prince, the 10-episode drama follows a young girl who moves from Brooklyn to the small lakeside town her father left behind, where her dogged pursuit of the truth leads her to unearth a cold case that everyone in town, including her own father, tried hard to bury.

Sturgess will play Matthew Lysiak, Hilde’s father in the series created by Dana Fox and Dara Resnik.

Crazy Rich Asians” helmer Jon M. Chu will direct and executive produce the untitled drama, which hails from Anonymous Content and Paramount Television. Joy Gorman Wettels and Sharlene Martin also serve as executive producers.

British entrepreneur Richard Branson announced he would step down as chairman of Virgin Hyperloop, CNBC reports.

The Financial Times reported the Saudi government announced Tuesday it was canceling a planned feasibility study for a high-speed transportation system with the company in response to Branson’s statement. But CNBC reports that the negotiations are still underway.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Leading D.C. lobbying firm representing the Saudi government’s interests, the Harbour Group, announced on Oct. 11 it was terminating its $80,000-a-month contract with the kingdom.

As usual, the weekend before Halloween is looking a lot like a graveyard when it comes to major movie releases. Though film releases aren’t crammed into just a few busy periods, as they were a few years ago, studios still strive to avoid the dead weekends on the calendar.

In the case of the pre-Halloween period, moviegoers are preoccupied with the coming holiday, and many parties are scheduled on weekends even when the holiday falls during the week. Plus, the surfeit of horror movies earlier in the month typically play through Halloween for those still looking for chills.

Labor Day weekend is an even worse period for the movie business, with family cookouts and back-to-school prep taking over moviegoers’ attention after the early and midsummer rush of blockbusters peter out.
