Jack Mathews: ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ is the Oscar frontrunner
As a former film critic and movie columnist, there are few things I enjoy more than a good fight over a much-anticipated, freshly-released picture and we have a doozy going right now over Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Critics usually square off over new Tarantino movies, but none of his pictures have spawned quite the op-ed fever of “Once,” at least going back 25 years to his “Pulp Fiction.”

Most critics, scholars and academics teaching film theory and the like immediately proclaimed “Pulp Fiction” a masterpiece, citing Tarantino as a genius, or at least a video store clerk savant, predicting his film would change the cinematic landscape for decades to come, and they were not wrong.

Other bright voices were raised in opposition, calling “Pulp Fiction’s” whimsical treatment of violence a grave cultural offense likely to cause actual violence in society, and condemned the movie as
