Greta Gerwig to co-write and potentially direct Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie

Back in January, it was announced that Margot Robbie is set to produce and star in Warner Bros.’ live-action Barbie movie, and now Variety is reporting that Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) and Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha) have signed on to co-write the script, with Gerwig potentially directing.

A Barbie movie had been in development for a number of years at Sony, with both Amy Schumer (Trainwreck) and Anne Hathaway (The Hustle) attached to star at different points. The current version at WB is being produced by Mattel Films, a newly-launched division of the toy giant designed to help bring its various brands such as Masters of the Universe, Hot Wheels and Monster High to the big screen.

Margot Robbie will be seen later this month as Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, while Gerwig’s Little Women adaptation is set for release in the U.
