2019 Oscars scorecard: ‘Roma’ wins over San Francisco critics, Ethan Hawke and Regina King move further ahead
Roma” had a winning weekend capped off by being named Best Picture by the San Francisco Film Critics Circle (Sffcc). Just minutes earlier, their counterparts down the coast, the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. (Lafca) had also picked Alfonso Cuaron‘s intimate memoir for top honors. These two west coast based groups added their endorsements to the critics in Chicago, Philadelphia and Toronto who had chosen it as the best of the year already this weekend. While Cuaron won over the L.A. journos with his helming, the Frisco bunch went with Spike Lee, who picked up his first critics award for directing “BlacKKKlansman,” which also won the Adapted Screenplay award. The Sffcc also singled out leading lady Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) and supporting player Michael B. Jordan (“Black Panther”) for their first critical kudos of this awards season.
