‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ could follow historic Emmy wins with historic Golden Globes breakthrough

  • Gold Derby
Live TV musicals have been hits since they came back into fashion in recent years, and a few of them were multiple-Emmy winners like “Hairspray” and “Grease.” But their biggest breakthrough came this year with NBC’s concert production of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which claimed five Emmys including Best Variety Special (Live) and surprised awards watchers by earning three acting nominations, something the recent spate of musicals hadn’t achieved even once. Can it achieve the same feat at the Golden Globes?

The Globes don’t have categories for variety programs, so “Superstar” is going up against other TV movies and miniseries like “The Tale,” “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” and “Sharp Objects.” That makes the race a lot more crowded than the Emmys were, and none of the recent musicals have broken through here, so that may be an especially tough race to crack.
