‘The Favourite’ is an Oscar favorite in key categories
Yorgos Lanthimos‘ latest film, “The Favourite” was certainly the people’s favourite at the London Film Festival. Here’s the synopsis of the Fox Searchlight picture: “In early 18th century England, a frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah.”

Lanthimos contended at the Oscars in 2015 for his original screenplay for The Lobster.” He lost that race to another writer/director, Kenneth Lonergan, for “Manchester by the Sea.” Lanthimos is currently ranked fourth in our predicted Best Director nominees, just ahead of Spike Lee with “BlacKkKlansman.” Ahead of him, however, are a trio of very strong competitors. Damien Chazelle (who won for “La La Land” in 2017) is in third place with “First Man” while Bradley Cooper is second for his directorial debut on “A Star is Born.
