NBC is continuing to build out its relationship with the Great White Way, as the network is developing “Voice of the City,” a New York-set period musical written by Tony nominee Claudia Shear.
The one-hour Universal Television drama, which has landed a script order, is set in 1891 during the rise of New York City. Incorporating original musical elements, “Voice of the City” is said to be a sweeping story told from the point of view of a romantic showman, Patrick, and his love, Lucy, as they struggle to create a life in a new land in the only business they know.
Shear, an actress and a playwright who received Tony noms for both best play and best actress for “Dirty Blond,” is exec producing along with Tony/Emmy-nominated songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Broadway’s “James and the Giant Peach” and “Dear Evan Hanson,” TV’s “Smash”). Oscar winner
