A television adaptation of the Scream franchise was first announced in April 2013.
The show's four main characters will be Harper Duval, Audrey Jesen, Noah Foster and Maggie Duval, TVLine reports.
Harper is a shy but popular 16-year-old girl, who enjoys a close relationship with her mother Maggie - the town's medical examiner.
Audrey was once Harper's best friend, though the pair have recently drifted apart, while Noah is Audrey's closest confidante - a tech geek with an encyclopaedic knowledge of books, films, TV and apps.
It is currently unclear if any characters or actors from the four Scream movies - released between 1996 and 2011 - will feature in MTV's pilot.
The pilot will begin with a YouTube video going viral, which soon sparks a string of murders in a quiet town with a troubled past.
