'Veronica Mars' movie: Why are fans called marshmallows?

With the movie just a few weeks away, "Veronica Mars" is back in popular culture and it's sticking around for a bit. If you're not a die hard fan of the show, there may be a few things you aren't quite clear on.

One of those is, undoubtedly, the term "marshmallow." That name is thrown around by everyone connected to the show, including star Kristen Bell, when talking about the fans. Where does it come from, though?

The answer to that comes from the very first episode of "Veronica Mars," which aired in 2004. After helping her brand new Bff Wallace (Percy Daggs III) outsmart the Pch motorcycle gang, she revealed the soft side under her tough exterior. She tried not to admit it but Wallace calls her on it regardless. "You're a marshmallow, Veronica Mars," he says. "A Twinkie."
