'Robot' masters mechanics atop weekend's boxoffice

20th Century Fox's I, Robot vaporized a sterling $52.2 million on its debut weekend at the boxoffice as the Will Smith starrer bumped Sony's Spider-Man 2 out of the top spot after the latter had a two-week run in that position. The opening for the Alex Proyas-helmed Robot, inspired by the short stories of Isaac Asimov, proved to be a personal best for Smith -- albeit by a mere $31,136 -- beating Sony's Men in Black II. It was also the fourth-biggest opening weekend this summer. Spider-Man 2 easily clung to the second spot with $24.8 million, down a relatively mild 45% in its third frame. The Tobey Maguire starrer shot past the $300 million mark in 19 days and is the second-fastest to that level after DreamWorks' Shrek 2, which took 18 days. Altogether the Sam Raimi-directed Spider-Man 2 has generated $302.3 million to date.
