Anne Hathaway to Star in Robert Zemeckis’ ‘The Witches’ (Exclusive)
Anne Hathaway has closed a deal to star as the Grand High Witch in Robert Zemeckis and Warner Bros.’ “The Witches” adaptation.

Variety first reported that Hathaway was holding the offer for both that and “Sesame Street,” and at the time, scheduling for both films were holding up dealmaking. With those issues settled, Hathaway is now set to star in the role originally portrayed by Anjelica Huston in the 1990 classic.

Based on the 1973 novel, the film follows a 7-year-old boy who has a run in with real-life witches. Warner Bros. had previously adapted the book in 1990 with Huston playing one of the title characters, but sources close to the project say Zemeckis’ version will be more rooted in the original source material, while the Huston pic was a loose adaptation.

Zemeckis will also pen the script as well as produce with his partner Jack Rapke through their banner ImageMovers, along

‘Creepshow’ TV Series Adapting Stephen King’s Most Disturbing Story

‘Creepshow’ TV Series Adapting Stephen King’s Most Disturbing Story
As a horror fan, there’s not much that actually shocks or disturbs me. But there are exceptions. One of those exceptions is Stephen King‘s grisly short story Survivor Type, featured in his collection Skeleton Crew. It’s a queasy, nasty piece of work about a man shipwrecked on a desert island, forced to slowly eat his own body […]

How a Costume Designer Brightened M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Glass’

How a Costume Designer Brightened M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Glass’
Paco Delgado’s costumes are as varied as his films. Contrast the drama “The Danish Girl,” the futuristic fantasy “A Wrinkle in Time” and the period musical “Les Misérables.” Now he’s in comic-book territory with M. Night Shyamalan’s newest superhero/supervillain thriller, “Glass,” which Universal releases Jan. 17.

The costume designer’s career began in Barcelona and London, and he attributes his eclectic design range to projects he worked on in those markets. “There were many opportunities [back then]. You’d do a contemporary film, then a comedy, then a drama,” he tells Variety on a call from London, where he’s working on an adaptation of T.S. Eliot’s “Cats,” his latest venture with Tom Hooper

At first, though, Delgado wasn’t enamored of the moving picture medium. He studied theater design at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona and then at Motley Theatre Design in London and began working on fringe shows.

‘Roma’ Will Be the Best Picture Nominee to Beat

Oscar ballots are closed, Directors Guild nominations have been revealed, and we’re just five days from the Academy Awards nominations announcement January 22. However, when it comes to Best Picture nominees, the only real mystery is how many there will be–they can fall anywhere from five to ten.

“The Favourite” and “Black Panther” are likely contenders; among the other possibilities are “First Man,” “A Quiet Place,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” But when it comes to the real race for Best Picture, we already know which ones will be the serious contenders: They are the same five films selected by the DGA. Some have more support from actors, while others are backed by the crafts.

Let’s break down their strengths, in order of likelihood. Which movies have all the right elements to make it to a Best Picture win?

1. “Roma” is a $15-million, black-and-white Spanish-language film set in 1971 and shot

‘Documentary Now!’ Trailer: That’s Not Actually Marina Abramovic, That’s Cate Blanchett
The latest season of “Documentary Now!” has Cate Blanchett playing a Marina Abramovic-style performance artist. It has Taran Killam and John Mulaney in a riff on “Original Cast Album: Company.” Owen Wilson pops up in a comedic reworked version of “Wild Wild Country.” There’s not much else to say, really, that would convince on-the-fence viewers that the latest season of IFC’s doc parody series is something to get excited about.

For those who somehow need a little more visual proof, the network revealed the first look at the six episodes that make up this season.

The show-within-a-show is now in its “52nd” season, offering up very specific twists on existing documentary classics. Aside from the aforementioned films getting the “Documentary Now!” treatment, this upcoming batch of episodes also includes a pre-“30 for 30” look at pro bowling, starring Bobby Moynihan, Michael C. Hall, and Tim Robinson.

‘Chappelle’s Show’ Co-Creator Says R. Kelly Threatened Dave Chappelle After ‘Piss On You’ Video

‘Chappelle’s Show’ Co-Creator Says R. Kelly Threatened Dave Chappelle After ‘Piss On You’ Video
Fifteen years before “Surviving R. Kelly” brought the eponymous singer’s history of alleged sexual abuse back into the national spotlight, nearly every teenager across America was talking about R. Kelly because of “Chappelle’s Show.” On March 23, 2003, the Comedy Central series aired a mock music video titled “Piss On You,” which starred Chappelle as R. Kelly performing a song about the real R. Kelly’s 2002 legal troubles over allegedly urinating on an underage girl. The clip went viral and is often referenced as one of Chappelle’s most popular sketches.

“Chappelle’s Show” co-creator Neal Brennan recently appeared on the radio program “The Breakfast Club” and was asked about the sketch, which has been widely talked about in the wake of “Surviving R. Kelly.” According to Brennan, the R&B singer sent a clear message to Chappelle by threatening him.

“R. Kelly wanted to fight Dave,” Brennan said. “Literally,

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Isn’t Michelle Yeoh’s First Crossover Hit, But She’s Still Pushing for Equal Opportunities

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Isn’t Michelle Yeoh’s First Crossover Hit, But She’s Still Pushing for Equal Opportunities
For her fifty-sixth birthday last August, Michelle Yeoh got a very big present: another crossover hit. Nearly 20 years after Ang Lee’s wuxia feature “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” became a massive smash at the domestic box office — grossing over $213 million, the rare subtitled foreign feature to break through to mainstream audiences — the Yeoh-starring “Crazy Rich Asians” pulled off a similar feat, earning nearly $175 million at the U.S. box office and upending any sense that all-Asian casts can’t appeal to wide audiences.

The film’s premiere was just one day after Yeoh’s birthday, a happy coincidence that only solidified the actress’ birthday wish: she wanted this one to succeed, even if she was a little intimidated by the pressures being put on it. “You realized it wasn’t just a movie, so much more seemed to be riding on it,” Yeoh told IndieWire recently. “Sometimes it felt like,
