‘Star Wars Episode IX’ Has Officially Wrapped
The end is nigh!

Filming for “Star Wars Episode IX” has officially wrapped, bringing an end to a franchise that has spanned more than 40 years and eight films.

Director J.J. Abrams confirmed the news Friday tweeting, “It feels impossible, but today wrapped photography on ‘Episode IX.’ There is no adequate way to thank this truly magical crew and cast,” he wrote. “I’m forever indebted to you all.”

Production for the film began in August of last year at Pinewood Studios outside of London where a number of new actors joined the “Star Wars” cast, including “The Americans” star Keri Russell, Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant.

‘Bond 25’ Moves Back Two Months In 2020

  • Deadline
‘Bond 25’ Moves Back Two Months In 2020
MGM’s Bond 25 will open April 8, 2020 now, instead of Feb. 14, 2020. That new date is the Wednesday before Easter, and currently 007 is the only major pic on that new date. Universal just pulled Fast & Furious 9 off of Holy weekend and pushed it to Memorial Day weekend that year.

Essentially, Easter weekend will be a crowded one in China, which is another reason why F&F 9 pulled out of that frame. Middle Kingdom is the bread and butter for the Fast & Furious franchise.

As previously reported, Beasts of Nation helmer Cary Joji Fukunaga stepped in to direct Daniel Craig after Danny Boyle decided not to steer the project.

007 scribe regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are back writing the Eon production.

Cast returning include Ralph Fiennes, Lea Seydoux, Naomie Harris, and Ben Whishaw.

Universal will be handling overseas on Bond 25 while MGM handles distribution.

Box Office: ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Dominates Valentine’s Day

Box Office: ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Dominates Valentine’s Day
Alita: Battle Angel” dominated North American moviegoing on Valentine’s Day with a first-day launch of $8.7 million at 3,790 locations, including previews.

Fox’s science-fiction actioner, produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez, is expected to wind up in the $37 million range during its first five days of release through Presidents Day on Monday. That’s above recent forecasts, which had pegged “Alita” for a $30 million debut.

Alita: Battle Angel” is a costly bet for Fox, given its $170 million production budget. Rosa Salazar stars as a cyborg with a mysterious past. The film, based on popular Japanese manga, had a solid start overseas last weekend, where it earned $32 million from 11 international territories.

New Line’s “Isn’t It Romantic” pulled in $4.4 million on Valentine’s Day for a two-day total of $6.2 million at 3,444 sites. Rebel Wilson’s satirical comedy, which opened on Wednesday, should wind up with around $20 million

M Night Shyamalan’s ‘Glass’ Crosses $100 Million at Domestic Box Office
M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office on Friday.

Domestically, the film starring Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and James McAvoy has earned $105.5 million. Globally, it has made $223.6 million.

Shyamalan wrote and directed the film that is a follow-up to his films “Unbreakable” and “Split.” Sarah Paulson also stars.

Still using the ominous-looking green security guard poncho from his old job, Dunn decides the next villain to track down is the very troubled Kevin Wendell Crumb (McAvoy), whose 24 personalities include a super-powered monster known as The Beast.

Chris Evans’ Action Film ‘The Red Sea Diving Resort’ Bought by Netflix

Chris Evans’ Action Film ‘The Red Sea Diving Resort’ Bought by Netflix
Netflix has bought global rights, excluding China, to Chris Evans’ action-thriller “The Red Sea Diving Resort” for release later this year.

Haley Bennett, Alessandro Nivola, Michael Kenneth Williams, Michiel Huisman, Greg Kinnear, and Ben Kingsley also star. “The Red Sea Diving Resort” is directed by “Homeland” creator Gideon Raff from his own script. Raff had originally sold the pitch to Fox Searchlight, but when it went back on the market, Bron Studios came on to finance and produce.

Evans portrays an Israeli agent who ran a secret Mossad operation in the early 1980s with a ragtag team of spies to smuggle persecuted Ethiopian Jews in Sudan, using a deserted holiday retreat as a front. The Arous Holiday Village, which had been built by Italian entrepreneurs in the early ’70s, was the site of the operation.

Williams plays a local agent in the movie. The mission, known as “Operation Brothers,” opened

The Great Oscar Crafts Mutiny: The Inside Story of How the Academy Backed Down

The Great Oscar Crafts Mutiny: The Inside Story of How the Academy Backed Down
When 76-year-old cinematographer John Bailey was elected to the presidency of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, he did so by promising to serve his supporters — the crafts. This week, they turned on him, which was the last thing he ever expected.

The AMPAS Board of Governors is a collection of three high-profile leaders from each of 17 branches, plus three more minority reps, Bailey, and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. Put 54 voices in a room, and you’re herding cats. Many board members complain it’s impossible to make decisions with so many dissenting opinions. Some have suggested a smaller board might help to solve the problem, reducing the reps to two for each branch.

In any case, Bailey didn’t know what he was stepping into when he took the job. An alpha male accustomed to walking onto a set with authority, he has tried to lead the Academy.

Cinematographers Praise Academy Reversal: ‘We Thank You for Your Show of Respect’

Cinematographers who fought the decision to curtail four Oscar presentations have praised the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for reversing the exclusions.

“We thank you for your show of respect for the hard-working members of the film community, whose dedication and exceptional talents deserve the public recognition this reversal now allows them to enjoy,” said American Society of Cinematographers president Kees van Osstrom, who spearheaded the opposition.

“The honor offered by the Academy Awards is vital to validating the claim that everyone contributing to the making of a motion picture is an artist,” he added.

Van Oostrum and three other Asc members — Hoyte van Hoytema, Rachel Morrison and Emmanuel Lubezki — met Thursday night with Dawn Hudson, CEO of the Academy, and Academy president John Bailey to press their case. The controversy had exploded when AMPAS announced Monday that the portions of the awards for four categories — cinematography, film editing,

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse’ Colored Outside the Lines

The well-worn superhero genre and one of its best-known icons are unlikely vehicles for creating a visually fresh animated feature. But Sony Pictures Animation’s work on the Oscar-nominated animated feature “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” shows throwing out the rule book and letting everyone play in the creative sandbox can pay off big.

“I think we all had one boss, and that boss is the movie,” says head of character animation Josh Beveridge, who oversaw just over 180 animators working mostly out of Sony Pictures Imageworks’ Vancouver facility.

Seeking to replicate on screen the graphic style of comic book art and illustration using everything from ink lines and half-tone dots to multi-panel images, Beveridge says the movie was animated almost entirely “on twos.” That typically refers to holding a single image for two frames instead of one so only 12 are required to produce one second of film, but it meant many things on this film.

Bond 25 Release Date Delayed by Two Months to April 2020
It would appear that James Bond doesn’t want to be our Valentine. The 25th film in the enduring espionage franchise, which will also be Daniel Craig’s last, has seen its release date pushed back from February 14, 2020 to April 8. 007 obsessives who have a hard time on the flower-and-candy-themed holiday as it is will likely enjoy it even less next year, alas.

Cary Joji Fukunaga is helming the long-awaited follow-up to “Spectre,” which many thought would mark Craig’s final go-round as Bond after also playing the suave spy in “Casino Royale,” “Quantum of Solace,” and “Skyfall.” Fukunaga most recently directed the Netflix series “Maniac,” his first TV venture since the acclaimed first season of “True Detective”; other big-screen outings include “Jane Eyre” and “Beasts of No Nation.”

“Over the years, you’ve seen a lot of different iterations not only of Bond, but of films that have mimicked it or copied it,
