Why 'A Star Is Born' Isn't Wowing Overseas Audiences
Why aren't foreigners going gaga for A Star Is Born?

Bradley Cooper's directorial debut, which features Lady Gaga in her first big-screen leading role, has wowed U.S. critics and audiences alike — earning some $178 million to date at the domestic box office and topping many awards season best-of lists.

But internationally, in many countries at least, A Star Is Born has failed to ignite.

The Warner Bros. release has earned $144.8 million to date outside of North America, just less than 45 percent of its total take of $322.8 million, while studio-style releases of this sort ...

Douglas Rain, Voice of Hal 9000 in ‘2001: A Space Odyssey,’ Dies at 90
Douglas Rain, who voiced the soft-spoken Hal 9000 robot that went rogue in Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” has died. He was 90.

The Stratford Festival, which Rain, who was a dedicated Shakespearean actor, co-founded in 1952, said that Rain had died of natural causes in Stratford, Ont. in Canada.

The festival said Rain performed at the festival for more than 45 years.

“Canadian theatre has lost one of its greatest talents and a guiding light in its development,” the festival’s artistic director, Antoni Cimolino, said in a press release Sunday, according to CTV.

“Douglas Rain was that rare artist: an actor deeply admired by other actors.”

Rain was born in Winnipeg, Man. in 1928, studied at the Old Vic in London, and performed at theaters and festival across Canada. He received a Tony nomination in 1972 for his role in Robert Bolt’s production of “Vivat! Vivat! Regina!”

What the Forky? New ‘Toy Story 4’ Character Explained

What the Forky? New ‘Toy Story 4’ Character Explained
Leave it to “Toy Story” to grapple with the big questions in life. Why are we here? Why are we alive? What is life about? And who — or what — is Forky?

That’s the question confusing many online after Disney and Pixar released the first teaser for “Toy Story 4.” The trailer features the toys prancing in a slow motion circle to the tune of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now,” only for a spork with googly eyes and red pipe cleaners (as voiced by “Veep’s” Tony Hale) to shriek in terror, “I don’t belong here.”

Because Forky may not be a “toy.” Director Josh Cooley explains in the announcement for the teaser that he is an actual spork-turned-craft-project. And though Bonnie, the new young girl and owner of all of Andy’s old toys, plays with Forky as though he were one, he feels he doesn’t belong.

Amy Adams on Her Teen Years: ‘I Was in a Position Where I Might Become at Risk’
“I don’t talk about it a lot…but when I was a young teen, I was in a position where I might become at risk,” Amy Adams said in her acceptance speech while receiving the Giving Tree Award at the Baby2Baby gala Saturday night, held at 3Labs in Culver City.

“You never know when an act of generosity will create a moment of great change, because I myself have been a recipient of so much generosity,” the “American Hustle” actress said, crediting “a community of individuals” and “the generosity of strangers” with helping her get to where she is today.

In a single night, the star-studded gala raised a record breaking $4.3 million in donations — enough to fund a year’s worth of efforts by the non-profit, run solely by mothers, to provide diapers, clothing and basic necessities to children in need.

Celebrity moms were out in force at Saturday’s event,

‘Jonathan’ Is A Suspenseful, Engaging Psychological Thriller & Showcase For Ansel Elgort In Dual Roles [Review]

A Freudian-fueled thriller with slow-burn sensibilities and diamond-sharp turns between each act, “Jonathan” is as engaging as it is unassuming. The story of a man who shares his body with a twin brother trapped inside his psyche, the movie might well have come off the tracks in about a dozen different places were it not so precisely assembled and paced. Tender, suspenseful, and effortlessly capable in its world-building, “Jonathan” accomplishes just about everything it sets out to do.

Does Lady Gaga’s Ally Sell Out to Become a Pop Star? ‘A Star Is Born’ Songwriter Weighs In on the Debate

Does Lady Gaga’s Ally Sell Out to Become a Pop Star? ‘A Star Is Born’ Songwriter Weighs In on the Debate
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s “A Star Is Born” is a box office sensation and one of the most beloved movies of awards season, but there has been a debate growing since the film’s October release over whether or not Gaga’s character, Ally, sells out as she makes the jump from singer-songwriter to full-blown pop star. The transition is marked by Ally’s new look and a divisive new sound, part of which was shaped by Gaga’s longtime collaborator Paul Blair.

Blair, who also goes by the name DJ White Shadow, has a producing and songwriting credit on Ally’s four pop songs on the “A Star Is Born” soundtrack: “Heal Me,” “Why Did You Do That?,” “Hair Body Face,” and “Before I Cry.” Many “A Star Is Born” critics have pointed to “Why Did You Do That?” and its immortal line, “Why’d you come

‘Leave No Trace,’ ‘Greyhound’ Illustrate Cost of War at Home and Abroad

‘Leave No Trace,’ ‘Greyhound’ Illustrate Cost of War at Home and Abroad
Since the earliest days of cinema, filmmakers have been telling military stories to both pay tribute to the sacrifices made by the troops and explore greater human truths. Whether fact- or fiction-based, from 1927’s Oscar-winning “Wings” to upcoming projects including “Greyhound” and “The Outpost,” war has served as a backdrop for rich, memorable character studies, illuminating details about veterans’ lives that do not merely resonate cinematically but intersect with universal themes, and spark important real-life conversations.

Aaron Schneider, who is directing “Greyhound” for star and screenwriter Tom Hanks, says military characters and their experiences satisfy almost foundational needs for storytellers.

“It was [author William] Faulkner who said that the pillars of story are love, pity, pride, compassion, honor and sacrifice, and a war story comes with all of the above,” Schneider says. “So right from the start, if you’re telling a war story, you’re starting with about the purest protagonist you can start with,

‘Rocky’ Actor Carl Weathers Reportedly Joins The Cast Of Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ TV Series ‘The Mandalorian’

Carl Weathers is an actor that doesn’t really seem like your typical sci-fi/fantasy pick. Perhaps best known for his role of Apollo Creed in the ‘Rocky’ franchise, as well as the incredible “son of a bitch” Dillon in “Predator,” Weathers is the type of macho action star that was big in the ‘80s. Now, it appears that the actor is turning in his boxing gloves for a blaster and cool armor for the upcoming live-action “Star Wars” TV series “The Mandalorian.”

This latest casting rumor comes courtesy of the Making Star Wars podcast, which says that Weathers will appear in the upcoming Disney+ streaming series in a supporting role.

‘Detective Pikachu’ Seems to be Channeling Deadpool in New Trailer

We get our first look at Legendary Entertainment’s live-action “Detective Pikachu” Monday and the furry little ball of lightning sounds and acts a lot like Deadpool. No surprise there, since Ryan Reynolds is voicing the role, but it’s still a little bizarre to see in action.

The film is based on the video game of the same name, which in turn is a spin-off of the wildly popular “Pokemon” games.” The story for the film, which is set for a May 10, 2019, release, has the father of the teen played by Justice Smith being kidnapped, forcing Smith to team up with the glib Pikachu in a hunt to find him.

The film stars Reynolds, Smith, and Kathryn Newton.

Legendary bought the movie rights in 2016, shortly after the Pokemon Go app game was released and became a worldwide phenomenon, so much so that it led to a 25% jump in the stock of part-owner Nintendo.

‘Detective Pikachu’ Trailer: Ryan Reynolds is a Lonely, Mystery-Solving Pokemon
This is not a dream (or a drug-induced nightmare) – Detective Pikachu is a real movie. Somehow. For some reason. Twenty years of Pokemon‘s world-wide domination and pop culture legacy, and the first live-action movie we get for the franchise is about a smart-talking Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds. Music has always played a major role in Spike Lee’s filmography.
