Anonymous Ballot: Editing Voter Refuses to See ‘Roma,’ Criticizes the Academy
With Oscar ballots filed, we continue our second annual series of interviews with voters from different Academy branches who share their thoughts on what got picked, snubbed, and overvalued in 2018.

What had gone down with the “non-televised awards” controversy left such a bad taste in my mouth that I wasn’t going to vote, except Hank Corwin (“Vice”) is a terrific and creative editor whom I wanted to support.

But with last week’s Academy reversal, it’s very gratifying to know that people who have devoted their entire adult lives to their crafts won’t be shunted aside. I did vote and the categories that I was most excited about are docs and foreign language film, which are full of deserving nominees.

The “non-televised awards” announcement has been handled about as well as the “Popular Film” category. It’s a shame, because I know and admire John Bailey and

Outside of a few acting and screenwriting nominees, there is very little overlap this time around and, frankly, it’s a welcome sight. It also means predicting the winners just got a wee bit harder.

Read More: Aubrey Plaza is the awards show host on earth [Interview]

See Taron Egerton Transform Into Elton John in New ‘Rocketman’ Trailer
A new trailer for “Rocketman,” the Elton John “fantasy musical” in theaters May 31, was released today. As the singer, actor Taron Egerton (“Eddie the Eagle”) performs “Tiny Dancer” and is seen honing his talent at home, rising to fame and grappling with the pitfalls that superstardom can bring. The film also stars Jamie Bell (as John’s longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin), Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard; English actor Dexter Fletcher, who also worked with Egerton on “Eddie the Eagle,” directs.

While recent years have seen a bounty of music-related biopics, Egerton stresses that’s not what “Rocketman” is. “Everyone thinks it’s a biopic. It isn’t. It’s a fantasy musical,” he told Collider last May. “So it’s actually his songs used to express important beats in his life at emotional moments. He’s not the only character that sings.” Indeed, a couple of the moments in

Stx Buys Matthew McConaughey’s Crime Drama ‘Bush’ for U.S.

STXfilms has picked up U.S. rights to Matthew McConaughey’s British crime drama “Bush,” with Guy Ritchie directing and producing, for $7 million.

The project, formerly known as “Toff Guys,” also stars Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, and Michelle Dockery. The deal was in the works in Berlin and has just been completed.

Variety first reported in October that McConaughey would star as a British drug lord attempting to cash out of his highly profitable drug empire by selling it off to a dynasty of Oklahoma billionaires. Miramax paid $30 million to pick up worldwide rights to the drama at the Cannes Film Festival and Stx began negotiations for the U.S. rights during the Berlin Film Festival.

Production began in the fall in England. “Bush” is in the vein of the British gangster titles “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch” that helped launch Ritchie’s career.

‘The Kid’ Trailer: Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke in Rock ‘n Roll Western

‘The Kid’ Trailer: Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke in Rock ‘n Roll Western
Ethan Hawke looks so good with two pistols in his hands it’s a wonder he hasn’t done more Westerns. From the cut of his jib in this new trailer for “The Kid,” if Hawke had been born earlier, he might have given Clint Eastwood a run for his money. Sporting a manicured mustache and a flat-brimmed black cowboy hat, Hawke plays a lawman with a philosopher streak in this spring release from Lionsgate, which also happens to star Chris Pratt as his scruffy nemesis and Dane DeHaan as a spirited Billy the Kid.

The official synopsis reads: “A young boy, Rio (Jake Schur), is forced to go on the run across the American Southwest in a desperate attempt to save his sister (Leila George) from his villainous uncle (Chris Pratt). Along the way, he encounters Sheriff Pat Garrett (Ethan Hawke), on the hunt for the infamous outlaw Billy

Malibu Fire Victims Vow to Rebuild as Real Estate Prices Hold

Malibu’s reputation as paradise took a beating in 2018. More than 450 homes were destroyed in the city limits during November’s Woolsey Fire, as were 750 or so more residences in the surrounding county. Heaviest hit was the region’s western edge.

“Although the fire has shaken the community, people are reenergized and those who lost homes want to come back home,” says Chris Cortazzo, Coldwell Banker Global Luxury, sales associate, Coldwell Banker Malibu. Cortazzo was able to keep his all his pending escrows after the fire.

“Prices haven’t retreated at all,” he says.

He expects a busy spring and leases continue to command a premium.

It seems the showbiz enclave is retaining its per-square-foot values — always dependent on variables such as architectural style, location and proximity to the beach —despite the devastation. Property Shark recently reported that in 2018, Malibu Colony Road was the No. 1 most expensive neighborhood in L.

‘Ready Player One’ Juxtaposes Real, Virtual Via VFX From Three Shops

‘Ready Player One’ Juxtaposes Real, Virtual Via VFX From Three Shops
Director Steven Spielberg set an ambitious goal for himself and his “Ready Player OneVFX team: weaving viewers in and out of a virtual world within the storytelling parameters of a traditional film. The movie, released by Warner Bros. in March, is one of five up for a visual effects Oscar this year.

To adapt Ernest Cline’s 2011 young adult novel about kids who escape a dystopian 2045 by immersing themselves in a massively multiplayer online simulation game, the talents of no fewer than 11 tech firms were required. The bulk of the work fell to three companies: Digital Domain, Industrial Light & Magic and Territory Studio.

The plot focuses on teenage gamer Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), who, like most of the underemployed population, spends what seems like every waking hour role-playing inside the virtual world called Oasis. In the game, he competes in a series of puzzles, the successful completion of which
