William Goldman, Oscar-Winning Writer of ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,’ Dies at 87
William Goldman, who won Oscars for his original screenplay for “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and his adaptation of “All the President’s Men,” died on Friday in his Manhattan home, according to the the Washington Post. He was 87.

His daughter Jenny Goldman cited complications from colon cancer and pneumonia as the cause of his death.

“Butch Cassidy,” a revisionist Western that helped popularize the buddy movie, announced Goldman as a screenwriter able to balance big laughs with a sense of adventure, while “All the President’s Men” cemented his status as a deft writer of suspense. The two are considered to be among the finest screenplays ever written and exemplify Goldman’s range and versatility.

In a 2015 interview with Signature, Goldman was asked about his ability to bounce from genre to genre.

“You cross your fingers and never stop,” he said. “Praying is also good.”

Pet Sematary director Mary Lambert is attached to helm an adaptation of Mira Grant’s mermaid thriller “Rolling in the Deep” for Branded Pictures Entertainment, Variety has learned exclusively.

Sean Hood, whose credits include Conan the Barbarian and Halloween: Resurrection, will adapt the novel, published in 2015. The story revolves around an idealistic young filmmaker who sets out to the Mariana Trench with a small crew to film a faux documentary about mermaids. But the hoax soon turns real as sailors begin to disappear and the filmmaker realizes that they are under siege by actual mermaids. A fight to survive at any cost ensues.

“‘Rolling in the Deep’ is a film led by complicated badass female characters,” Lambert said. “I’ve been waiting to make a film like this my entire career. Our mermaids are not cliché sugary cartoon princesses; they will take you down if you stand in their way.

Exclusive: Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (X-Men Apocalypse) lead cast in climate-change sci-fi-thriller 2067, which is now underway in Australia.

Also starring are Deborah Mailman (The Sapphires), Aaron Glenane (Killing Ground), Damian Walshe-Howling (Mystery Road), Leeanna Walsman (Safe Harbour), Finn Little (Storm Boy) and Oz newcomers Sana’a Shaik and Matt Testro.

Seth Larney (Tombiruo) is writing and directing the feature which will see humans looking to the future for answers after the planet’s forests, wildlife and plants are ravaged by climate change. Producing are Lisa Shaunessy (Killing Ground) through her Arcadia production banner, and Kate Croser of Kojo Entertainment.

Kew Media Distribution, part of Kew Media Group, is handling international sales, excluding Australia and New Zealand where Umbrella Entertainment has distribution rights. Shout! Studios has acquired all North American rights. The film started principal photography at Adelaide Studios, South Australia on November 3.

Lalo Schifrin: ‘Impossible’ Composer Receives Oscar for Jazzy Career
Lalo Schifrin has been writing movie and TV music for 60 years, including such iconic themes as “Mission: Impossible,” “Dirty Harry” and “Cool Hand Luke.” And while he has been nominated for six Oscars, he’s never won.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will rectify that oversight when it awards him an Honorary Oscar for his entire career at the 10th annual Governors Awards on Nov. 18 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom.

Schifrin is the third composer in Academy history to receive such an award. Alex North was voted one in 1985, Ennio Morricone another in 2006.

“It’s a great honor, and an incredible surprise,” says the Argentine-born composer, now 86. His numbers alone are staggering: more than 100 film scores, nearly 90 television projects and more than 50 classical works since the late 1950s. He’s also won four Grammys and received four Emmy nominations.

“Lalo is a model film composer,” says Academy music governor Laura Karpman.

Beatriz Seigner’s ‘Los Silencios’ Wins Stockholm Impact Award

Brazilian writer-director Beatriz Seigner’s “Los Silencios” won this year’s Impact Award at Stockholm Film Festival.

The film, which world premiered at Cannes’s Directors Fortnight, is a supernatural drama about a family torn by Colombia’s civil conflict.

Seigner’s sophomore outing, “Los Silencios” beat out strong contenders including Brady Corbet’s “Vox Lux” and Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s “Birds of Passage.”

The Impact Award is meant to highlight films that are politically minded and reflect today’s world in innovative ways. This year’s theme among the nominated films was the impact of armed conflicts on lives and relationships.

The festival praised “Los Silencios” for the “strong characters portrayed — especially the mother and her son; and the way it tackles big issues in a changing country” with an “intimate” approach.

The nominations for the 34th Independent Spirit Awards are being announced live this afternoon, setting the stage for the awards season with a decidedly indie bent. Over the last several years, the Indie Spirits have become both a champion of underdog indies and a key indicator in which films and performances could end up with the Oscar.

Some of the year’s biggest titles are, however, not eligible for this year’s Indie Spirits per their rules, including “Vice,” “The Sisters Brothers,” and “Mary Queen of Scots,” while Alfonso Cuarón’s lauded “Roma” only qualifies for Best International Film.

This year’s nominations ceremony is hosted by “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout Gemma Chan and Indie Spirit alum Molly Shannon, and IndieWire will be updating each category live as they are announced.

Three years ago, Ryan Coogler’s “Creed” pulled off an impossible gamble: It recontextualized the “Rocky” franchise by relegating its famous snarling boxer to the sidelines. As Adonis, the offspring of deceased boxer and Rocky pal Apollo Creed, Michael B. Jordan injected the franchise with fresh juice — as a sensitive, tortured soul with daddy issues to work through, Adonis made “Rocky” relevant again. Though Coogler later proved the commercial viability of blockbusters with black faces, “Creed” got the ball rolling on a comparatively intimate scale.

In “Creed II,” Michael B. Jordan, all hardened fury and wounded tenderness, reprises the role of Adonis Creed, the ardent bruiser who’s got boxing in his blood as much as his father, Apollo Creed, ever did. The movie is a sequel to “Creed,” Ryan Coogler’s astonishingly vibrant and soulful 2015 spinoff/reboot. But you could also call it the eighth “Rocky” film. And maybe because Coogler opted out of this one, and the script was co-written by Sylvester Stallone (with Juel Taylor), “Creed II,” far more than the first film, feels like it’s drawing heavily on a 40-year-old franchise.

Taken on its own terms, the movie is a rousing and effective sequel, with a couple of surprise punches and, mostly, a lot of smooth feints and jabs you’ve seen before. But if you compare it to, say, the second and third “Rocky” sequels, with its larger-than-life villains,

December marks the 40th anniversary of the “Superman” movie, which opened Dec. 15, 1978, and influenced generations of action films. In recent years, many people were distressed that Claire Foy was paid less than Matt Smith for Netflix’s “The Crown,” but pay gaps are not always about sexism. Blame the star system. Back on June 30, 1976,Variety reported that Marlon Brando agreed to play the title character’s father in “Superman” for a salary that was “unprecedented.” It was eventually revealed that the actor was paid $3.7 million and an amazing 11.75% backend to play Jor-El, for 13 days work and less than 20 minutes onscreen. In comparison, Christopher Reeve earned $250,000 in the title role, dominating most of the 143-minute running time.

Brando was at the height of his power, after “The Godfather” and “Last Tango in Paris.” In 1976, exec producers Ilya Salkind & Alexander Salkind and producer Pierre Spengler needed a star to get financing. “Star Wars” hadn’t opened.

‘Star Is Born’ Cinematographer Matthew Libatique Released Without Charge in Poland
A Polish judge has ordered U.S. cinematographer Matthew Libatique released from jail following an arrest on suspicion of assault in Bydgoszcz, where he was attending the EnergaCamerimage festival.

“Mr. Libatique was released from custody by court in Bydgoszcz yesterday,” his Warsaw-based attorney, Marcin Maminski, said Friday.

According to local news accounts, Libatique was arrested after he was seen staggering at the Holiday Inn early Tuesday morning and then became abusive toward a paramedic called by a concerned witness.

Maminski said Judge Monika Gorska-Makarewicz ordered the cinematographer let out of jail without a fine, but prosecutors may still argue for charges to be filed in the next week. The assault charge under consideration carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison.

The release came despite a prosecutor’s request for detention and a fine of 10,000 Polish zlotys, according to the main Polish daily, wyborcza.pl. It was not yet

Gina Rodriguez’s upcoming film “Miss Bala” is being hailed as a barrier-breaking action film. That’s the glass-half-full take on things. There’s another way of looking at the story of a beauty queen trying to escape a violent drug cartel, however. When it opens Feb. 1, “Miss Bala” will represent one of the starkest reminders of the dearth of big-studio films featuring Latinos in leading roles.

In 2017, just two of the year’s top 100-grossing films featured Latino actors in lead roles, according to USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s annual report on female and minority film representation. None of last year’s top 100 films featured a Latina actress in the lead role, and nearly 65 had speaking roles for Latinas. The release of “Miss Bala” comes at a time in Hollywood when other landmark films featuring African-American and Asian-American performers such as “Black Panther” and “Crazy Rich Asians” have dominated the box office.

‘Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald’ Launches With $31 Million at International Box Office

Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is showing magic at the international box office, grossing $31 million at 24,350 screens in its first two days.

The tentpole, which added 45 markets on Thursday, is the top movie in all but one of 55 territories. The top markets are France and South Korea, with $3.6 million each in two days.

“Fantastic Beasts 2” launched in Russia on Thursday, with $2.1 million from 3,554 screens, and dominated the market with an 87% share of the top five films. It debuted in Brazil with $2 million on 1,474 screens, taking 60% of the top five. The film opened with $1.4 million on Thursday in Germany after reeling in $1.3 million in sneak previews. It pulled in $1.7 million in Australia, making “Grindelwald” the top Warner opening for 2018.

Cancun, Mexico — Indie producer Tristen Cutler has teamed with Marvel’s “Avengers Assemble” and Nickelodeon’s “Back at the Barnyard” producer Kyle Jolly on a new apocalyptic, Meso-American-themed animated project for kids, “Maya Unstoppable.” The two met with Variety while shopping the series at Los Cabos and MipCancun, and shared an early mock-up teaser trailer.

In 2015, April Reign’s viral hashtag campaign #OscarsSoWhite indicted the Academy for its lack of recognition of contributions made by creatives of color. Since then, on-screen representation has become a cause célèbre, with inclusivity initiatives that aim to navigate culture toward more gender and racial equality. However, numbers don’t tell the full story: How much freedom do black creators have when the storytelling expectations remain mired in variations of the black struggle?
