Macon Blair to Direct and Write ‘Toxic Avenger’ Reboot for Legendary (Exclusive)
Macon Blair has been tapped to write and direct Legendary’s reboot of the cult classic “The Toxic Avenger,” sources tell Variety.

Legendary acquired the feature film rights in December and have quickly made the project a high priority at the studio. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment will serve as producers with Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter overseeing for Legendary.

Kaufman and Herz produced the original 1984 comedy, set in the fictional town of Tromaville, N.J., and centered on a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s chased out a second story window by bullies and lands in a drum of toxic waste. The chemicals cause him to transform into the Toxic Avenger, who has superhuman size and strength and stands up to bullies and corruption.

Writers Guild, Hollywood Agents Negotiate With Deadline Looming

The Writers Guild of America and Hollywood agents have held a sixth negotiating session with a deadline for a new deal 16 days away — and it’s uncertain whether progress is being made.

The Association of Talent Agents made counter-proposals at Thursday’s session that contain provisions for more accountability and transparency by agencies for clients including giving writers consent over whether a television show is packaged, as previously promised. But they do not eliminate agencies receiving packaging fees or having ownership interest in affiliate production companies — which are key demands from the WGA.

It’s unclear whether those proposals will be enough for the WGA leaders to reach a deal. The two sides made little progress in the five previous negotiating sessions to revamp the 43-year-old franchise agreement governing how agents represent writers.

Failure to reach a deal before April 7 means the agreement expires. That could have severe consequences because

Fox Layoffs Leave Staffers Stunned and Saddened

Fox employees knew this day was coming. For over a year, the men and women who work at the Century City lot have talked of little else but severance packages and job searches. They knew that when Disney wrapped up its $71.3 billion acquisition of much of 21st Century Fox’s film and television assets, thousands of jobs would be eliminated.

But, as they found out on Thursday, there is a difference between anticipating a painful future and watching that feared reality come to pass. The ax fell at the film division with brutal efficiency, wiping away much of the senior leadership at Fox’s marketing, distribution, and consumer products arms. Some staffers, who had been engaging in gallows humor for weeks, burst into tears when they received the word in one-on-one meetings with human resources reps that their positions were being terminated. Others retreated to nearby bars to host impromptu

Disney Clarifies Film Leadership After Harrowing Day of Fox Layoffs

Following the dismissal of top executives in distribution, marketing and strategy on Thursday, new 20th Century Fox owner Disney has clarified its new top leadership.

Five distinct Fox labels and a portion of their leadership have been welcomed into the Disney fold, the company said. This includes Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Family, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox 2000, and Blue Sky Studios.

The Elizabeth Gabler-run imprint Fox 2000 will be shuttered, Variety previously reported earlier in the day, though the late Thursday announcement from Disney noted Gabler will continue on through “the completion of the current slate.” Animation label Blue Sky Studios is expected to complete the release of two films in production, Variety reported last year, though its fate after that point is unknown.

Remaining studio leadership at labels like Walt Disney Studios, Walt Disney Animation, Pixar, Lucasfilm and Marvel remains unchanged. Fox Film lost a series of top leaders in marketing,

Studio Marketing Chiefs Discuss the Theatrical vs. Netflix Oscars Debate

On a day where a large part of the Fox marketing department was wiped out in the aftermath of the Disney merger, a group of marketing chiefs from other studios and streamers sat down at the Variety Entertainment Marketing Summit presented by Deloitte “to discuss the issues shaping the feature marketing landscape today, including the theatrical distribution vs. Netflix Oscars debate.

“It’s an Academy issue, they need to figure out how they want to define what a feature film is…they need to be crystal clear on how they’re evaluating it,” said Michelle Hooper, Marketing Evp at Fox Searchlight. “For me I feel like it needs to be a level playing field, they need to define is it a four-week theatrical window, and they need to report box office, regardless of the spending. It just needs to be defined and all of us need to be playing in the same sand box.

‘Us’ Explained: When the “Why” Is Far More Interesting Than the “How”

Spoilers ahead for Us. For the most part, movies are not puzzles. They may have mysterious aspects that lead to an answer, but if your movie just asking you to “solve” it, then the film dies once the movie has been “solved”. A far more interesting and lasting picture doesn’t ask for solutions, but instead looks for interpretations. When it comes to Jordan Peele’s new movie, Us, I can understand the temptation to solve how the doubles work, how they relate to the people above ground, and so forth. But these questions miss the more interesting and engaging …

Disney Shutters Fox 2000 as Restructuring Begins

In the first bit of fallout from the industry-altering $71.3 billion Fox/Disney deal, which finally became official yesterday, Disney will retire the Fox 2000 film label. The news comes as something of a surprise considering Disney previously indicated that Fox 2000 head Elizabeth Gabler would continue on after the transition, and while it remains unclear what waits for Gabler and her team since they have not officially been given pink slips, the Fox 2000 label is at an end. The news comes from Variety, who reports that Disney remains committed to completing the Fox 2000 films currently …

Disney Retires Fox 2000 Imprint, Lays Off Top Executives Following Acquisition

20th Century Fox is officially owned by Disney, but not everything — or everyone — is coming with it. A day after the $71.3 billion acquisition was made official, one Fox imprint has already been axed: Fox 2000, which recently produced “Hidden Figures” and “The Hate U Give” and was previously responsible for producing the likes of “The Thin Red Line,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Walk the Line,” “The Fault in Our Stars,” “Joy,” and “Life of Pi,” among many others.

Fox 2000, overseen by Elizabeth Gabler, had been expected to make the transition; the future of her staff (six executives work under her) at Disney is uncertain.

Other layoffs that came down Thursday include Pam Levine, president of worldwide marketing, as well as co-president Kevin Campbell; domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson; international distribution president Andrew Cripps; and chief creative officer Tony Sella, who worked on more than 400 titles, including “Avatar” and the “X-Men

Conan O’Brien’s Full Archive Is Coming to the Team Coco Website, Starting With the Remotes

To the delight of Conan O’Brien fans, it was announced last year by Team Coco that every clip from “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” would soon be available in one place online. With the original launch date of January behind us, the new plan has emerged: Clips will be uploaded in phases to the Team Coco website, the first of which, “Conan 25: The Remotes,” is coming next Monday, March 25. More than 350 offsite segments will be included.

Here’s how the painstaking process works: “First, we take this shitty tape my brother Neil recorded off his TV and convert it to DVD. Then the DVD is converted to a 3D IMAX film, which we then screen for a hip-hop dance squad who transform it into a bomb-ass routine” explains O’Brien in a new video as visual aides accompany this elaborate transformation. “An artist then watches the dance

Paul Feig’s Feigco Entertainment Jumps From Fox to First-Look Deal at Universal

Universal’s comedy constellation just added another star, welcoming Paul Feig from 20th Century Fox Film on Thursday.

Universal has set a first-look production agreement with Feig’s Feigco Entertainment, bringing in the prolific producer, writer, and director known for hits like “Bridesmaids” and the recent “A Simple Favor.”

News of Feig’s relocation shook out of a firestorm of layoffs on Fox’s West Los Angeles lot this Thursday, the result of Walt Disney’s absorption of the company’s film and TV assets. Little will change for Feig, whose shop will continue to be co-run by producing partner Jessie Henderson.

After dropping out of college years ago, Feig spent a year working as a Universal Studios tour guide while launching a stand-up career.

“Paul is one of the most distinctive and versatile filmmakers working today, and we are thrilled to welcome him, Jessie Henderson, and the FeigCo team back to Universal.

The Toxic Avenger remake has been in development for an age now, and some exciting filmmakers have been attached along the way, but today brings news of by far the most left-field bit of news yet.
