Talk about nepotism. “Abigail,” a blood-sucking thriller about the daughter of Dracula, arguably the most famous vampire in history, is poised to lead at the domestic box office.
The R-rated movie, from Universal Pictures, is aiming for $12 million to $15 million from 3,300 North American theaters in its first weekend of release. But “Abigail” first has to fend off last weekend’s champion, A24’s “Civil War,” before taking the box office crown. The provocative thriller debuted last weekend with $25.8 million and looks to bring in $10 million to $12 million in its sophomore outing.
Based on projections, “Abigail” will, however, dance circles around two fellow newcomers, director Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and Crunchyroll’s anime adventure “Spy x Family Code: White.” Those films are targeting $5 million to $6 million, though rivals have pegged ticket sales ever-so-slightly higher at $8 million.

Pamela Anderson is dressing up for Naked Gun.
The actor has signed on to star opposite Liam Neeson in Paramount Pictures’ untitled remake of Naked Gun, based on the crime spoof comedies that were released in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Akiva Schaffer is directing the comedy, which has a script by Dan Gregor, Doug Mand and Schaffer. The trio were behind the popular and Emmy-winning Disney+ movie Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
The original movie, written and directed by Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams and David Zucker and based on their television series Police Squad! that lasted only six episodes, spoofed the tropes of police shows and films that had ingrained themselves into audience’s minds over the decades. It centered on an inept and clueless detective named Frank Drebin, played by Leslie Nielsen, who still somehow managed to solve the crime and save the day.

When The Real Housewives of Atlanta casting team announced they’d hired four-time Olympic gold medalist, Sanya Richards-Ross, to join the Bravo franchise in Season 14 of the reality series, many were excited. It was an interesting choice considering her background and being new to the Atlanta area. The Jamaican-born track and field star was introduced as a friend of semi-newcomer, Drew Sidora, who'd joined the previous season. Their friendship unraveled when Richards-Ross accused Sidora of being messy and disingenuous. It shocked Sidora and fans, with some accusing Richards-Ross of squad-hopping and switching on Sidora to be part of the popular crew with the OGs of the show. But Richards-Ross insisted it wasn’t true.

Guillermo del Toro is voicing his lifelong admiration for animation auteur Hayao Miyazaki.
The director was tasked with penning the tribute to Miyazaki as part of Miyazaki earning a spot on the Time 100. In his writeup, del Toro praised the Oscar-winning “The Boy and the Heron” writer/director for crafting his own filmic tastes. Del Toro has announced that he is looking to focus on animated projects going forward.
“I discovered Hayao Miyazaki’s Toei Animation films as a child — films like ‘The Wonderful World of Puss ’n Boots’ and series like ‘Heidi and Marco,’ in which his style and influence became increasingly identifiable,” del Toro wrote. “Encountering ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ as an adult, my mind snapped back to those earlier works, and I recognized how much this man had shaped my childhood.”

Coming off the massive critical success of “Killers of The Flower Moon,” Martin Scorsese is reexamining his next potential options. While it briefly seemed like Scorsese’s next movie would be an adaptation of the high seas pic “The Wager” with current muse Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Wolf of Wall Street”) attached to star, a long-developing project from years ago seems to have circled back to his main interest.

Brian Cox has never been one to withhold his true feelings, and at London’s HistFest the “Succession” star unloaded on a variety of topics Sunday night including politics, theater critics and Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon.”
“It’s terrible,” Cox said of the Oscar-nominated historical drama, per The Standard. “A truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix. It really is appalling. I don’t know what he was thinking. I think it’s totally his fault and I don’t think Ridley Scott helps him. I would have played it a lot better than Joaquin Phoenix, I tell you that. You can say it’s good drama. No — it’s lies.”
Cox then mused about Phoenix’s name: “I think he’s well named. Joaquin … wackeen … wacky. It’s a sort of wacky performance.”

Guy Ritchie is no stranger to the tactful art of blending incredible history with his bombastic brand of action, but The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare ratchets it up to a whole new level. Inspired by the unbelievable true story of Operation Postmaster—a top-secret British operation to take out a key Nazi stronghold on the Spanish island of Fernando Po—Ritchie turns real-life heroics into jaw-dropping action sequences and unmitigated bloodshed led by a who’s who of Hollywood beefcakes. If you ever wondered what it might look like to watch Superman, Reacher, and Santanico Pandemonium beat up Nazis, then this movie is for you.

When FX's historical epic series, Shōgun, premieried earlier in the year, the series began to garner attention from audiences with some comparing the Japanese themed political drama to Game of Thrones, arguably one of the greatest television series ever made. Though both shows shared similarities with intricate political scheming and brutally violent scenes, given Shōgun's latest episode, there is an argument that both are equally great in their own right. Much of Shōgun has centered around the power struggle between the Minowara, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and the Council of Regents in Osaka headed by Lord Ishido Kazunari (Takehiro Hira). Now ahead of its final episode, FX has released a new trailer teasing Shōgun's ultimate showdown is about to happen.

As seen in Survivor 45 and Survivor 46, having a split Tribal Council immediately after the tribe is merged is a bit of a detriment to strategy. Despite having only three original tribe members present, the Yanu Tribe came out unscathed. While it does cause an exciting scramble to occur following the Immunity Challenge, it throws a wrench into how the majority alliance would play the game. Tribal lines are thrown out the window as self-preservation is underway. While a similar twist did appear in Survivor 42, the merged tribe had a group vote under their belt already as tribal lines were already established. Plus, the first group's eliminated castaway was sitting in the jury box and thus, affected the next group's vote tremendously. Twists are welcome in the game of Survivor, but who are they really helping? The post-merge game of Survivor has changed, and the players are forced to play on their toes unlike ever before.

Walton Goggins is killing it in the new Prime show Fallout as The Ghoul, Aka Cooper Howard. His steely demeanor as the immortal creature and Western action star before the big blast almost makes you forget that he also can ham it up with the best of them in the comedy genre. After Eastbound & Down and before The Righteous Gemstones, the actor starred alongside McBride in Vice Principals, which ran for two seasons in 2016 and 2017. As Lee Russell, he and McBride form a hilarious duo of children that only appear to be fully grown adults. As the titular vice principals, these are a crass and combustible couple of man-children. From “Cooking Papa” and “Food Wars: Shokugeki No Soma” to “Delicious in Dungeon” and every Ghibli film in between, anime has a rich history of wholesome food porn. Yet even so, it might still come as a surprise to some fans of “Spy x Family” that the show’s first theatrical outing would revolve so heavily around a cooking competition.
It’s not just any cooking competition, mind you. After it looks like spy extraordinaire Loid Forger might be taken off Operation “Strix,” the mission that first brought his found family together, he decides to help his adopted daughter Anya win a coveted prize at Eden Academy, thereby ensuring that the Forgers can stay together for at least a little bit longer. The ever-perceptive Loid quickly realizes that the key to victory lies in making the principal’s favorite meal, a rather “elegant” pastry named Melemele. And so off the...

Steven Spielberg is one of the most influential and celebrated directors of all time. He helped define the blockbuster, established the look and feel of '80s genre fare, and gave us the best (and possibly only well-shot) big-budget studio musical of the last decade. But despite getting his start in science fiction, Spielberg has mostly distanced himself from the genre in the past decade or so.
Still, Spielberg has remained an ardent fan of the genre, praising recent gems such as "Godzilla Minus One" and proclaiming his fandom for Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two." Perhaps this has rekindled a passion for sci-fi in 77-year-old Spielberg, seeing as he's now getting ready to return to one of his favorite subjects — aliens.
According to Variety, Spielberg is likely going to "make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea." David Koepp is writing the screenplay, according to the outlet's sources.

Martin Scorsese is taking on biopics of both Jesus and a music god: Frank Sinatra.
The Oscar-winning auteur is rumored to be once more developing a biopic based on the legendary crooner — a project Scorsese’s been associated with before — with longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio in talks to portray Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. Variety reported the news. DiCaprio recently starred in Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and also led other Scorsese-helmed biopics like “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Aviator.”
Variety noted that Frank Sinatra’s daughter Tina Sinatra controls her father’s estate and hasn’t yet approved a film adaptation of his life story. However, Scorsese is already looking to cast both DiCaprio and fellow Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence in the film, with Lawrence portraying screen star Ava Gardner, who was Sinatra’s second wife after Nancy Barbato. Lawrence and DiCaprio co-starred in “Don’t Look Up.

"Killers of the Flower Moon" may have ended with a bittersweet final coda from Martin Scorsese, but the acclaimed octogenarian director clearly still has plenty of future projects on his plate. Variety just broke the news that Scorsese apparently has a Frank Sinatra biopic in the works, and while the filmmaker's reps declined to comment, the outlet claims he has none other than frequent leading man Leonardo DiCaprio in mind to play the lead. The filmmaker's take on the famous crooner's life also reportedly will include a major part for Jennifer Lawrence, who sources say will play Sinatra's second wife, Ava Gardner.
According to the trade outlet, the Sinatra picture isn't exactly a done deal: Variety notes that Sinatra's daughter Tina, who controls the late singer's estate, hasn't given her blessing for the movie yet. Still, studios including Sony and Apple are reportedly interested in the as-yet-untitled film, which...

It's been a long time coming for fans of The Spiderwick Chronicles, as the series finally makes its long-awaited debut this week. Just under a year ago, the completed series was dropped by Disney+ before thankfully being acquired by the Roku Channel. The series, all eight episodes of which are available to stream starting April 19, is a terrific young adult fantasy adventure that incorporates just enough horror elements to keep things interesting. Under showrunner Aron Eli Coleite and director Kat Coiro, it updates the story where necessary, but most importantly, never loses sight of the spirit of the Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi book series on which it is based.

Collider can share an exclusive clip from Season 6, Episode 8 that sees everyone preparing for Dan's birthday. However, things quickly go awry when he walks through the door earlier than expected, forcing the surprise party preppers to quickly and awkwardly try to pretend that they've completely forgotten about his special day.

Updated: The Cannes Film Festival will have an admirable UK and Irish presence in 2024, including three films from Dublin, London and Belfast-based production company Element Pictures, Andrea Arnold’s Bird in Competition and features from fresh talents Sandhya Suri and Rungano Nyoni, as well as Sister Midnight in Directors’ Fortnight.
Competition is still proving a tricky spot to land for UK or Irish directors. In 2022, none made the cut, while in 2023, UK filmmakers Ken Loach and Jonathan Glazer made it through with The Old Oak and The Zone Of Interest respectively.

"Familly Guy" is more than a show at this point. 25 years into its long run on television, it's a straight-up, locked-in part of the larger pop culture fabric. It's similar to "The Simpsons" in that way. But as the show is in the midst of its 22nd season, with a 23rd on the way, are we getting close to wrapping it up with the Griffin family? Creator Seth MacFarlane certainly doesn't seem to think there is any good reason to end it any time soon.
The Los Angeles Times recently caught up with MacFarlane, as well as the showrunners and members of the cast to celebrate 25 years of "Family Guy." MacFarlane, who voices a number of characters on the show including Peter, Stewie, and Quagmire, among others, was asked whether he believes the show could run for another 25 years. After some back and forth, the animation guru explained that there...

Visual effects studio Digital Domain is introducing a new version of its Masquerade facial motion capture system, which eliminates the need for actors to wear tracking markers on their faces during production. Cto Hanno Basse tells Variety that the company is sharing the development with customers and “we’re probably going to do several projects this year” using the tech.
A bit of history: Earlier versions of Masquerade were used by Digital Domain to enable Josh Brolin to play Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” and Tatiana Maslany to portray the titular “She Hulk.”
Basse believes that by eliminating the need to use tracking markers, Masquerade3 can save time and money while getting a more precise performance.
“It removes the need of getting the dots on people’s faces every day. So it saves time and money on set,” he says. “The other thing was, because the dots...

The Golden Bachelor took The Bachelor format and applied it to people in their “golden” years, which begin at the age of 65 and last through the remainder of a person's life. The first-ever Golden Bachelor is Gerry Turner, a 72-year-old looking to find a new bride to spend those golden years with. Gerry's quest for love landed him in the arms of the woman he chose, Theresa Nist, who beat out 21 other women for his affection. Things took a turn, however, when The Hollywood Reporter published a piece saying that Gerry was not who he portrayed himself to be. Not letting the report stand in the way, the first-ever Golden Bachelor wedding special went on as planned. Unfortunately for the reality couple, their marriage was not meant to be, and three months after walking down the aisle, they announced that they were getting divorced.

Regardless of which era of human history one might be born into, it would seem there always exists a fascination with what came before. In Starz's historical drama, Outlander, we experience an epic tale of love, passion, and family through the eyes of World War II nurse, Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) and her 18th-century lover, the Scottish warrior, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). It's been almost a decade since the first episode premiered on August 9, 2014, and multiple storylines, time travels, and continents later, the final chapter of Outlander is being written with production on the eighth and final season already in full swing. Heughan is one of the individuals who has been with the project since its inception, and watching it draw to a close has been an emotional ride.

Mark Twain once quipped, “Age is a case of mind over matter. If you don’t mind it, it doesn’t matter.” When it comes to Martin Scorsese, age certainly isn’t making a difference. After landing 10 Oscar nominations for last year’s historical crime epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the 81-year-old director has mapped out his next several projects. Sources say he plans to shoot two films back to back: the first about Jesus, the second a Frank Sinatra biopic.
The Oscar-winning director who helped usher in the Hollywood New Wave of the 1970s is looking to bypass the studio system and independently finance “Life of Jesus,” based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 book. He took the same approach with the 2016 drama “Silence” (which also was adapted from an Endō novel). In fact, Scorsese would like to reunite with “Silence” star Andrew Garfield for the Jesus project, though it...
