‘Aquaman’ Amazon Prime Previews Hook Near $3M Besting ‘Jumanji 2’
Updated 12:09 pm: with more preview figures: One Saturday 7 pm show at roughly 1,225 theaters last night of Warner Bros./DC’s Aquaman made a huge $2M $2.9M in paid sneaks, a figure that beats the $1.86M earned by Amazon Prime’s previous collaboration with Sony a year ago on Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. If we were to rank Aquaman on this weekend’s B.O. chart it would file in 10th place ahead of Universal’s Green Book ($2.78M at 1,215 theaters), Fox Searchlight’s The Favourite ($2.5M weekend at 439 theaters) and Fox/New Regency’s Widows ($1.2M at 1,228).

Already, Aquaman has caught plenty of fish abroad with an overseas box office of $261M before officially opening stateside.

Mortal Engines,” a steampunk fantasy adventure, is also an epic flop.

With a budget of just over $100 million and tens of millions in global marketing costs, executives at rival studios estimate that the movie will lose upwards of $100 million. Some even project that number could float to more than $125 million. “Mortal Engines” has so far made a paltry $42 million globally. The sci-fi epic came into a crowded marketplace at a competitive time of year, opening against the well-reviewed “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “The Mule,” a Clint Eastwood thriller that had a better start than expected. “Mortal Engines,” on the other hand, launched below estimates, generating just $7.5 million when it debuted in North America.

“This is a true Christmas disaster and a lump of coal for Universal,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “They took a big swing, and they struck out.”

'Aquaman' Hits $152 Million at International Box Office
Warner Bros.’ tentpole “Aquaman” has taken in $152 million overseas in 36 markets, with $135 million of that from China, where it opened on Dec. 7.

The Jason Momoa vehicle has become the highest China grosser in the DC Universe and surpassed the lifetime grosses of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Black Panther” in the Middle Kingdom. Mexico debuted with $1.4 million on Thursday on 3,517 screens while Russia and Brazil each took in $1.3 million.

Indonesia has taken in $2.2 million in two days and the U.K. generated $1.8 million in two days of previews. Taiwan’s two-day total is $1.4 million and the Philippines generated $1.1 million. In the U.S., Amazon Prime is holding advance screenings of “Aquaman” on Dec. 15 amid expectations of a $65 million opening weekend in North America on Dec.

“My heart breaks for all the women who were victimized by Harvey Weinstein,” the Oscar winner and X-Men alum said in a statement on Friday. Filed on December 12 in Los Angeles Superior Court, the Jane Doe of the six-claim unspecified damages seeking action accuses Weinstein of repeatedly forcing himself upon her. The jury requesting complaint also alleges that in his promises of movie roles for Jane Doe, Weinstein boasted that he had an affair with Lawrence and implied that is why she won the Academy Award.

Sometimes raw figures don’t tell the full story. Case in point: This weekend, grosses dropped nearly 60 percent, or about $160 million, below the same results for the same three-day weekend, even more from the year before. Does this mean the end of the year has become a disaster?

Well, no. Why? Because most years see the release of top holiday films delayed closer to December 25 — the better to maximize impact and not worry about peaking too early. And this year saw no “Star Wars” title released.

By other comparisons, the results — which include decent or better initial takes for two new films (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “The Mule”) and an ongoing impressive showing for “The Grinch” — portend an excellent end-of-year result.

Viewers were surprised by the cancellation of “Daredevil” last month; so was the cast. Charlie Cox called it “painful,” and now his castmate Amy Rutberg has said that even “people high up at Marvel” were shocked by the move — and that Netflix was solely responsible for the decision.

“My contacts at Marvel were very surprised. Any of the rumors that it was a Marvel decision are wrong, I think it was purely a Netflix decision. That comes from personal conversations with people high up at Marvel. They were surprised,” said Rutberg in an Inverse interview.

“We had heard rumors we would start production as early as February 2019,” she said. “It’s a little unusual to be that far ahead in the planning and cancel the show, which makes me think Netflix was laboring over whether or not to cancel it. My guess was it was not an easy decision.”

Hulu wants viewers to turn up the volume for a good cause this year and stream its two new Asmr-inspired scenics, the latest in the streaming service’s slow-tv answer to the famed Yule log after last year’s “Puppies Crash Christmas.”

For the uninitiated, Asmr stands for “autonomous sensory meridian response,” a perceptual phenomenon in which a person experiences a physical tingling around the scalp, neck, and shoulders upon being exposed to sensory stimuli – usually auditory. The Asmr trend has inspired countless YouTube videos in which influencers whisper or manufacture noises intended to evoke the response.

‘Aquaman’ Crosses $250 Million at Foreign Box Office
Things are going swimmingly at the box office for “Aquaman” as the Warner Bros.’ superhero flick hits another major milestone overseas.

James Wan’s take on the ruler of the seven seas just passed $250 million internationally, and a weekend haul of $126.4 million from 43 territories brings its foreign tally to $261.3 million. “Aquaman” — starring Jason Momoa — opens in the U.S. on Dec. 21.

Aquaman” has seen the biggest returns in China, generating another $54.2 million this weekend. It has now earned $189.2 million in the Middle Kingdom, ranking as the fourth-highest grossing superhero movie of all time in that territory. It launched in the mainland last weekend with a record $94 million. Mexico racked up $7.9 million when it opened on 1,715 screens this weekend, followed by Brazil ($7.7 million), Russia ($7.4 million) and the United Kingdom ($6.5 million).

Reviews have been surprisingly strong for the aquatic adventure, the first feature film centered on the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis.

“Obviously my feelings were hurt,” he said during an appearance on the Post Mortem podcast, per Flickering Myth. “You know, I had just done two movies…forgive me if I sound defensive, [they] were both at 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
