'How to Train Your Dragon 3' Looks to End February on a High Note
The winter box office season is nearing an end, serving as good news for what has been a rather rough start to 2019. Fortunately, before all eyes turn to March and Captain Marvel and Us, it would appear one of the final new wide releases of the season is looking to close things out on a high note as Universal debuts How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, their first DreamWorks Animation release since acquiring the animation studio in 2016 for $3.8 billion. The film is already off to a strong start internationally since releasing overseas seven weeks ago and is now looking to keep the momentum domestically. Also going wide this weekend is MGM's Fighting with My Family, after a limited debut last weekend, and Roadside is debuting Run the Race in moderate release. At a reported $129 million, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World carries the lightest budget

Sam Richardson Is Pretty Ticked Off, and It’s Kind of Great

Sam Richardson Is Pretty Ticked Off, and It’s Kind of Great
For an actor whose onscreen persona is built around being the nicest guy in the room, Sam Richardson is audibly angry over the fate of his first series, “Detroiters.”

“I should be more careful how I speak, I guess, because we’re still trying to sell the show to whoever we can, and I guess I don’t want Comedy Central to nix the deal because of my loose lips,” Richardson said in an interview with IndieWire. “But at the same time, I’m also very frustrated.”

There is no evident salvation awaiting “Detroiters.” Despite Comedy Central’s attempts to sell the show, support from various critics, and even an open letter from Seth Meyers, a last-second renewal is a long-shot six months after cancellation. What’s left is a show with a legacy worth preserving and an actor, producer, and creator who deserves to create more projects of his own.

‘Native Son’ Trailer Shows Ashton Sanders in HBO Adaptation of the Acclaimed Novel

HBO has released the Native Son trailer. Directed by Rashid Johnson from a screenplay by Suzan-Lori Parks based off the acclaimed novel by Richard Wright, the story follows Bigger Thomas (Moonlight’s Ashton Sanders in a riveting performance), a young man on the south side of Chicago who takes a job working as a driver for an affluent white family. I caught Native Son at Sundance last month, and the first half of the film is incredibly strong with Johnson showing himself as a director to watch and Sanders giving a captivating performance as the quiet, volatile Bigger. However, …

He’s Back: John Krasinski Will Return to Direct ‘A Quiet Place 2’

As expected, it sounds like John Krasinski will indeed be back in the director’s chair for A Quiet Place 2. Krasinski famously rewrote the original script for A Quiet Place, reworking it as a metaphor for parenting while also pitching himself to direct as well as star in it. That worked out remarkably well, as the film is not only extremely well-crafted (and surprisingly emotional), but was a huge box office hit, scoring over $340 million worldwide against a budget of just $17 million. Based on the film’s success, it was clear Paramount would probably turn it …

‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ Trailer Reveals Leslie Jones’ Ice-Cold Antagonist

Sony Pictures Animation's The Angry Birds Movie 2 is about to introduce a new character into the crew of returning fan-favorites. Zeta, voiced by Leslie Jones, is front and center in a new trailer for the summer sequel, and like the rest of us, she's pretty tired of winter. So tired, in fact, that's she's packing it up and heading to warmer climes. The issue is that the tropical getaway just so happens to be where our familiar characters are currently residing, pigs and birds alike. One wonders if Zeta's ice-cold arrival might …

‘Native Son’ Teaser Trailer: HBO Films Announces An April 6 Premiere

It was a mildly strange move. Indie powerhouse A24 Films bust into Sundance with a handful of movies that were going to take the festival by storm with. Presumably, they release them too. Instead, A24 sold the critically-acclaimed “Native Son“—an adaption of Richard Wright‘s seminal 1940 novel—to HBO Films. But one supposes that a) A24 knows what they’re doing b) so does HBO Films and c) A24 has struck out and made a lot of deals lately for others to distribute their films.
