What’s Your Damage? Why a ’Heathers’ TV Adaptation Hasn’t Worked — Yet

What’s Your Damage? Why a ’Heathers’ TV Adaptation Hasn’t Worked — Yet
As “Heathers” approaches the 30th anniversary of its U.S. premiere, television has made yet another failed attempt to pay homage to Michael Lehmann’s 1989 pitch-black high school comedy. The cult classic starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater inspired a whole genre of dark school comedies that tried to emulate the film’s quippy dialogue, heightened style, and satirical look at the grim realities of teenage life.

Add to that list of imitators The CW’s Archie Comics melodrama “Riverdale,” which presented its second musical episode on Wednesday. This time around, it featured the Broadway musical “Heathers,” which is a more heartfelt and navel-gazing adaptation of the movie. Even though the gothic “Riverdale” would seem like a good fit for this homicidal high school tale, the show managed to fail in honoring both the film and stage versions of “Heathers.”

In fact, it didn’t even try. There’s no

Film Review: ‘Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn’

It’s a Herculean effort to take a multi-volume manga like author Akihito Tsukushi’s “Made in Abyss,” adapt it into a popular anime television series, and then compress the show into a coherent feature, but the folks at Sentai Filmworks have done just that. Part one, “Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn,” will screen around the U.S. in its original Japanese on March 20 and in an English dub on March 25, to be followed at a later date by “Wandering Twilight,” which opened in Japan in January.

While the first half of director Masayuki Kojima’s cinematic cut-down hits more ebbs than flows, its character-driven escapades and colorful fantasy landscape are captivating enough to engage the uninitiated. Give or take a few tweaks to the material, this catchy premise about an adventurous tween girl and her amnesiac robot-boy companion exploring a mysterious chasm in her city adapts decently well

Writers Guild Makes Concession on Film Financing in Agent Talks

The Writers Guild of America has made a concession in film financing in its negotiations with Hollywood talent agents — the second in six weeks of talks.

WGA West executive director David Young said Wednesday that it had made a “significant move” toward reaching a deal with the Association of Talent Agents for a revamped franchise agreement on how agents represent writers. Young said in letter to Ata executive director Karen Stuart that the two sides will return to the bargaining table for a sixth session on Thursday.

“It is our hope that this significant move on our part will bring the parties closer to an overall agreement and that we can have further discussion of this proposal at our negotiation session tomorrow,” Young said.

The report comes with the WGA and the Association of Talent Agents having made little progress in negotiations to revamp the 43-year-old rules governing how agents represent writers.

Samuel L. Jackson Dared Tim Roth to Curse on Live TV When He Lost at the Oscars

Samuel L. Jackson Dared Tim Roth to Curse on Live TV When He Lost at the Oscars
Amidst chatter about that new Quentin Tarantino film arriving later this year, one of the director’s past and future collaborators took an opportunity to reflect on a missed opportunity. Tim Roth, perhaps best known for his appearances in Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction,” was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 1995 adaptation of “Rob Roy.” On the most recent edition of “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” Roth explained that Samuel L. Jackson dared him to react a certain way if he didn’t end up winning.

“I’m sitting there and just before it comes up, Sam Jackson turns around at me and says, ‘Now, Tim. When you lose, say ‘Motherfucker!'” Roth said. With the camera still on all five nominees, viewers would be able to see him mouth the word.

“I missed that, and I always regretted that,” Roth added.

SXSW Notebook: E-Scooters, Three Studio Comedies, and the Political Party at the Paramount

Austin may have the highest scooter-to-citizen ratio of all e-scooter inclusive cities in the U.S. While my first impressions of previous editions of SXSW were the abundance of free swag and promotional doodads oozing out of the assorted pop-ups and festival-converted locales, this year it was all the scooters. In a single day, I witnessed a scooter driver get swiped by a car and two others fall clumsily to the pavement. University of Texas baseball star David Hamilton, Kaiser Health News reported, struck a pothole riding an e-scooter and tore his achilles tendon. He’s out for the season. Concerned Austin […]

Disney, Fox Employees Grapple With Day One Transition on Two Hollywood Lots

What kind of a boss will Disney be?

That’s a question facing employees at 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, National Geographic Partners, FX Networks, and other assorted parts of Rupert Murdoch’s former media empire. Wednesday was their first full day as staffers of the Walt Disney Co. and the initial moves have done little to assuage anxieties. Many employees arrived at Fox’s Century City lot expecting the worst. The Fox and Disney merger is expected to result in as many as 4,000 lost jobs.

The ax has yet to fall, but many staffers believe that pink slips could be handed out this week. There are rumors that some employees will be asked to stay on for a transitional period while others will be given severance packages almost immediately. Employees who are staying on expect to be told who they will report to by Thursday.

Murdoch’s new Fox Corp.
