Can 'Avengers: Infinity War' Deliver a Record Opening Weekend?

Can 'Avengers: Infinity War' Deliver a Record Opening Weekend?
Following the record-breaking, $207.4 million opening for The Avengers in May of 2012, it took three years for another film to top the $200 million mark when Jurassic World debuted with $208.8 million in June 2015. Later that year Star Wars: The Force Awakens would go on to deliver the largest opening weekend ever, coming just shy of $250 million, en route to a domestic run topping $936 million. Since then, two more films have topped the $200 million mark over the course of their opening weekend in the recent releases of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Black Panther, and with the release of Avengers: Infinity War this weekend, it isn't so much a question of whether it will be the third film in the last five months to open over $200 million, but can it threaten Force Awakens's all-time record? Debuting in over 4,470 locations, Avengers: Infinity War will be the widest debut for a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever,

The Efp at Hot Docs: European Docmakers Record New Cultural Shifts

The Efp at Hot Docs: European Docmakers Record New Cultural Shifts
The Changing Face of Europe, a program about to be launched at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto (April 26-May 6), presents 10 European documentaries that give a taste of Europe’s filmmaking output, and a glimpse at some of the forces shaping the continent.

Shane Smith, the festival’s director of programming, says that two of the themes it explore are people “grappling with the repercussions of history,” and how, when the blinders are off, folks realize “they can’t rely on what they are being told by their political leaders.”

“Rodeo,” which gets its international premiere at Hot Docs, centers on the chaos surrounding Estonia’s first free elections after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, and the rapid introduction of free-market economics that followed. The story, which draws on archival footage alongside recent interviews with the politicians at the center of events, unfolds like a conspiracy thriller.

Tom Hiddleston Talks ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and Landing Loki
In a new Variety “Stagecraft” podcast, Tom Hiddleston discusses his recent staging of “Hamlet” under the direction of veteran Shakespeare adapter Kenneth Branagh. Branagh was also the director who gave Hiddleston perhaps his most well-known role to date as God of Mischief Loki in “Thor,” a role he reprised on-screen in “Avengers: Infinity War,” opening this week.

Hiddleston originally auditioned for the title role before being cast as Loki. In fact, the two were appearing in a stage production of “Ivanov” in London the night Branagh revealed he would be directing the movie and Hiddleston let his interest be known. “I ran up to his dressing room with a water cooler, pretending it was a hammer,” reveals Hiddleston. “A sincerely bad joke.”

But even then, Branagh saw potential in Loki. “He did say to me, ‘Well, you never know, but Loki’s the part. If I was an actor, the

Billion Dollar Cinematographer Jonathan Sela Rises as Master Storyteller

Director of photography Jonathan Sela was born in Paris and raised in Israel, but it was during a boyhood visit to his grandfather’s hometown in Poland that his future in filmmaking was foreshadowed. The family was surprised to find a Hollywood film crew working in the tiny village. The production was “Schindler’s List,” and among the filmmakers were Steven Spielberg and his Dp, Janusz Kaminski. The film went on to earn seven Academy Awards, with an Oscar for best cinematography among them.

Sela found his way to cinematography over the next two decades, but not because of that brief, chance encounter. His love for storytelling was — and is — the driving force. “I was always fascinated by the experience of seeing films in the theater,” says Sela. “I loved the escape from reality into some kind of alternate reality. I’ve never really had another job besides working on movies.
