China Box Office: ‘Project Gutenberg’ Wins Quiet Weekend With $20 Million
Hong Kong crime thriller, “Project Gutenberg” held its lead to win a second weekend at the Chinese box office. However, overall numbers remain weak and Hollywood is on the sidelines.

Starring Aaron Kwok and Chow Yun-fat, “Gutenberg” earned $20.6 million in its third weekend of release, according to data from Ent Group. That was down 45% on its previous winning weekend, and lifted its score to $135 million after 15 days of release.

Drama, “Lost, Found” improved on its opening weekend and climbed one place to second position. It earned $7.97 million and has a cumulative of $22.0 million after 10 days in theaters.

Zhang Yimou’s “Shadow” incurred a 54% decline and slipped to third place. After 15 days of distribution it has accumulated $80.1 million.

Newly-released Indian comedy drama “Hichki” (aka “Hiccup”) earned $4.20 million for fourth place. Starring Rani Mukherji as a woman with Tourette’s Syndrome, the film was released in India and diaspora territories in March this year.

It wasn't quite as close as we thought it might be at the top of the box office, but last weekend's top two films definitely disappoint. Sony's Venom held on even better than expected, delivering a second weekend at #1 while Warner Bros.'s A Star is Born continued to shine. As for the weekend's three new wide releases, Universal's First Man led the way, narrowly edging out Sony's Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween for third place on the weekend chart while Fox's Bad Times at the El Royale fell outside the top five. With an estimated $35.7 million, Sony's Venom dropped just 55% in its second weekend as the film's domestic cume now totals $143 million after just ten days in release. Heading into the weekend a drop of 60%+ seemed most likely considering historical precedence, but the film continues to outperform expectations, holding on similarly to Logan, which dipped just 56.9% in its second weekend.

A heavy drug-addiction drama based on a pair of father-son memoirs is a breakout for Amazon, which has been trying to gain traction as a film distributor. Three significant Netflix films also made limited theatrical debuts this weekend: “22 July,” “The Kindergarten Teacher,” and “Apostle.” Grosses are largely hidden, per the usual Netflix affront to transparency, but we have a small indication of their draw.

The biggest-ticket Netflix item is “22 July” from Paul Greengrass, a retelling of a recent horrific massacre by a Norwegian right-wing youth. Greengrass has had a string of well-regarded studio films including two “Bourne” episodes, “United 93,” and “Captain Phillips,” and he is one of the highest-profile directors to go the Netflix route.

‘Venom’ Grabs $69 Million From International Markets
Tom Hardy’s “Venom” remained a potent player internationally in its second weekend, grabbing $69.7 million with first-place finishes in 54 markets at 20,100 screens.

Sony’s superhero saga has now taken in $235.3 million in a dozen days from overseas markets and is tracking 32% ahead of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and 12% ahead of “Doctor Strange” for the same group of markets at the same point in release. It’s also won the domestic box office twice for a worldwide total of $378.1 million.

France was the top market for “Venom” as it launched in first with $6.7 million (including previews), topping the openings of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “Wonder Woman.” Vietnam also generated a first-place opening with $3 million for “Venom,” as did Thailand with $2.2 million.

Disney Offers Concessions to Calm E.U. Competition Concerns Over Fox Deal

The Walt Disney Company has offered concessions to try and calm E.U. anti-trust concerns over Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of 21stCentury Fox’s entertainment assets. The move was announced Monday by the European Commission with Disney having submitted the proposal Friday. Details of the concessions offered have not been revealed.

The European regulator has also extended its deadline for reviewing the merger from Oct. 19 to Nov. 11. The Commission is expected to consult with customers and media competitors before deciding whether to accept the concessions offered.

Disney received approval of the acquisition from the U.S. Justice Department in June after agreeing to sell off Fox’s 22 regional sports networks. Disney and Fox shareholders voted to approve the buyout on July 27.

Appeals Court Reverses Stage Money Counterfeiting Conviction in Hong Kong
The film props master who was earlier found guilty of possessing counterfeit money by owning dummy banknotes used in Hong Kong film “Trivisa” had his name cleared on Monday. A High Court ruled that he was improperly convicted.

In an appeal, the court ruled in favor of Cheung Wai-chuen, owner of a well-known film properties company who was sentenced to a four-month suspended sentence in May. Law Yun-lam, a logistics firm employee, received the same sentence.

In 2016, when crime thriller “Trivisa” was released, Cheung was said to have loaned 9,996 bogus Hk$1,000 banknotes to Law for a prank. The police found the banknotes in Law’s car and 223,000 more banknotes at Cheung’s warehouse. Although the banknotes were labelled as movie props, the pair were found guilty.

‘Shadow’ climbs one place to second.

Following a rather disappointing weeklong National Day holiday, the second week of October (Oct 8-14) remained weak as it shrunk by 65.8% week-on-week.

The National Day titles continued to dominate the chart, with no new releases in the top five. Felix Chong’s Project Gutenberg, with Chow Yun Fatt and Aaron Kwok, topped again on $36.6m.

Its 15-day total of $133.9m has made it the eighth highest grossing local film of 2018 as well as the top grossing Hong Kong cop and crime thriller, surpassing 2016’s Cold War 2. But it is only about half of that

After weeks of speculation, “Crazy Rich Asians” has landed a release in China. The brash Asian-centric romcom hit is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 30.

Doubt over a release in the world’s second-biggest film market had dogged the Warner Bros. film, with observers wondering whether its depiction of ostentatious wealth among the ethnic Chinese super-elite in Singapore would pass muster with China’s film regulators. The Chinese government has recently tightened its control of the culture and media sectors, insisting that they uphold “core socialist values.”

But film authorities announced Monday that “Crazy Rich Asians” would get an outing in China after all. Warner Bros. is expected to confirm details on Tuesday.

Critics mostly hated the ‘poisonously dull’ superhero movie – but it’s a monstrous worldwide hit with cinema-goers

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a cinema-goer in search of a bad movie at the multiplex today must be in want of Venom. Tom Hardy’s unhinged superhero tale – based on a Spider-Man villain, but lacking even a passing reference to the now Marvel-owned web-slinger – is being showered in the viscous black goo of negative critical reviews. Chris Hewitt on The Empire Podcast declared it could set comic-book movies back 10 years and this publication’s Peter Bradshaw said it was “riddled with the poison of dullness”.

And yet, people are going to see Venom. Its global box office opening weekend of $205m has doubled its $100m production budget and the mammoth $80.3m domestic bow smashed the $55m record for an October opening previously held by Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar-winning Gravity.

If the new Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody doesn’t include at least one party scene featuring dwarves with platters of cocaine on their heads, I am asking for my money back. While that might look tasteless today (even if the party in question is well documented), there is an impression that the film will seek to put a slant on Mercury’s life, since it is co-produced by his Queen bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor.

HFPA to Partner with Lumière Festival on Lumière Brothers’ Films Restoration

Lyon, France — The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is partnering with the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon to help restore 300 short films by brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière. In collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna and the Lumière Foundation, the donation will fund the second phase of restoration.

“The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has long been a supporter of film restoration with the goal of preserving the rich history of the world’s cinematic heritage,” said HFPA president Meher Tatna. “We’re proud to partner with the Lumière Foundation in Lyon, one of the world’s premiere showcases of classic and restored films.”

The Institut Lumière said the collaboration represented a renewed commitment to the preservation of film threatened by decay and deterioration.

Lyon, France — The Lumière Film Festival opened in Lyon, France, on Saturday with a grand ceremony celebrating the event’s 10th anniversary.

Institut Lumière Director Thierry Frémaux welcomed a host of French and international stars and filmmakers to the festivities at the city’s immense Halle Tony Garnier concert hall, among them Javier Bardem, Monica Bellucci, Jean Dujardin and Guillermo del Toro.

It was Jean-Paul Belmondo who drew the evening’s biggest applause and a standing ovation, however. The iconic French star was on hand for the opening night screening of Claude Lelouch’s 1988 comedy-drama “Itinerary of a Spoiled Child” in a newly restored print. Lelouch and co-star Richard Anconina were likewise in attendance.

Lyon, France — The Lumière Festival’s International Classic Film Market (Mifc) kicks off on Tuesday, offering current assessments of the industry, technological developments and an examination of the heritage film sectors of Europe as well as of Africa and the Middle East.

Streaming: where to find the best space films

From a 50s sci-fi curio to Hollywood blockbusters, there have been giant leaps in films that reach for the moon

First Man is in cinemas now, in all its crashing, whooshing, non-flag-waving glory, reminding audiences afresh that the space race has served Hollywood remarkably well over the years. Even at its most scientifically credible, there’s an eternal streak of fantasy to the business of launching human beings far beyond Earth: for most of us, the sheer unimaginability of such a mission lends even the most prosaic space-travel stories a tingle of fascination.

Damien Chazelle’s gripping moon-landing drama can stand proudly upright in the astronaut canon, but it also left me hungry to revisit The Right Stuff (1983), which I, like many critics, had long regarded as Hollywood’s crowning achievement on the subject.
