Disney and Fox Film Merger Could Be Heavy on Drama (Analysis)

Now comes the hard part.

On Thursday, the Walt Disney Company unveiled the list of 20th Century Fox film executives who scored a visa to the Magic Kingdom. Once Disney wraps up its $71.3 billion acquisition of much of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, Fox film vice-chairman Emma Watts, Fox 2000 head Elizabeth Gabler, Fox Searchlight co-heads Steve Gilula and Nancy Utley, Fox animation co-heads Andrea Miloro and Robert Baird, and Fox Family president Vanessa Morrison will all be making the move. Their new gigs have been among the worst kept secrets in Hollywood (though woe to the entertainment journalist who wrote they had deals in place!), making the news something of a meh moment.

What was interesting was how little information there was in the Disney release about what Watts, Gabler, and the rest of the Fox team would be doing under their new leaders. There were a few hints

‘Unlovable’ Trailer: Melissa Leo and John Hawkes Are Estranged Siblings in Duplass-Produced Sex Addiction Dramedy

‘Unlovable’ Trailer: Melissa Leo and John Hawkes Are Estranged Siblings in Duplass-Produced Sex Addiction Dramedy
When Charlene deGuzman was still but a comedic Twitter force with a few viral YouTube videos under her belt, she slid into Mark Duplass’ DMs to send him a script for her pilot. To deGuzman’s surprise and delight, Duplass wrote back right away to say he loved it and wanted to turn it into a film. More than two years later, “Unlovable” is opening in theaters after impressing critics and audiences at its SXSW debut.

With help from fellow filmmaker Sarah Adina Smith (“Buster’s Mal Heart”), Duplass and deGuzman collaborated on the script, which is based on deGuzman’s own experiences with addiction and recovery. They enlisted director Suzi Yoonessi, and nabbed the powerhouse acting duo of Melissa Leo and John Hawkes, who play embittered siblings in the film.

‘Caniba’ Review: Cannibal Documentary Is One of the Most Unpleasant Movies Ever Made

  • Indiewire
“Caniba” ranks among the most unpleasant movies ever made, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see it. Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor — the directing duo behind the singularly immersive “Leviathan” — push the limits of documentary filmmaking even further this time around, albeit in a different direction: Their follow-up amounts to a feature-length monologue delivered by Issei Sagawa, who in 1981 killed and ate a woman named Renée Hartevelt. Chew on that for a moment: At a time when Errol Morris is facing backlash for giving Steve Bannon a platform in “American Dharma,” Castaing-Taylor and Paravel have done the same with an actual cannibal.

Sagawa, also known as Pang, was a 32-year-old PhD student at the Sorbonne when he lured his classmate to his Parisian apartment and shot her in the neck; Hartevelt accepted his invitation under the guise of translating poetry for class. He spent the next two days

Box Office: ‘Grinch’ Targets $50 Million-Plus Debut, ‘Girl in the Spider’s Web’ Aims for Mid-Teens
October has proven to be a surprisingly solid month at the box office, and November releases “The Grinch” and “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” hope to keep the end of the year going strong.

Universal and Illumination are getting in on the holiday spirit early when “The Grinch” opens on Nov. 9. Early tracking shows the animated family film, based on Dr. Seuss’ classic Christmas tale, is heading for a start between $50 million and $60 million.

This is the third Grinch adaptation following the 1966 TV special and the 2000 feature with Jim Carrey. Carrey’s take on “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” bowed with $55 million and is still the second-highest grossing holiday movie of all time with $345 million worldwide.

Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier directed the newest version, which has Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the green grouch who threatens to destroy Christmas. The voice cast also includes Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson and Angela Lansbury.

Almost everything I had read or heard about Outlaw King sounds absolutely insane, and I'm pretty excited for the brute-force Scottishness of it all. But for now, if you want a wee taste of it, you can check out a new poster that Netflix has released for the film, which comes from Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie. As we wrote when the trailer was release, "based on a true story, the film stars Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce, a man who transformed from defeated nobleman to outlaw hero during Edward I’s occupation of medieval …

Baltimore Police Department Criticizes ‘SNL’ for ‘Inappropriate’ Cop Sketch in Open Letter to Lorne Michaels

Baltimore Police Department Criticizes ‘SNL’ for ‘Inappropriate’ Cop Sketch in Open Letter to Lorne Michaels
The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police criticized “Saturday Night Live” for its misrepresentation of the city’s police officers in a sketch that aired during the October 13 episode, hosted by Seth Meyers. The sketch, entitled “Traffic Stop,” featured Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and new cast member Ego Nwodim as cops who flirt with a male driver they’ve pulled over. Baltimore Pd member Lt. Gene S. Ryan sent the letter to “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels.

“We must take issue with the grossly inapt portrayal of our members during this particular sketch,” the letter states. “As you are most likely aware, the Baltimore Police Department is currently a very beleaguered agency in the throes of massive criticism and disrespect. Many of our members, especially our younger ones, are struggling with their choice of career and we are losing good and credible members daily. It is a difficult time in Baltimore and to portray our brave,
