‘The Favourite’ Finalizes 2019 Oscar Plan: Olivia Colman Enters Best Actress Race, Stone and Weisz Go Supporting

Fox Searchlight is officially putting Olivia Colman in the best actress race for her acclaimed performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.” The studio has confirmed to IndieWire it has finalized its plans for positioning the film for the upcoming 91st Academy Awards, which include campaigning Colman in the lead actress race and her co-stars, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, in the supporting category.

Colman’s performance has been lauded at festivals since the film world-premiered at Venice, where she took home best actress honors. Emma Stone won the same prize in 2016 and ended up with the Oscar for best actress in 2017. Since “The Favourite” debuted at Venice, Oscar pundits have been speculating which category Fox would place Colman, Stone, and Weisz. This year’s best supporting actress race is widely seen as less competitive than the main acting race, leading some to believe Fox would submit Colman for supporting to strengthen her chances of winning.

The Greatest Biopics Ever Made — IndieWire Critics Survey

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.

This week’s question: In honor of “First Man,” which is now playing in theaters, what is the greatest biopic of all time?

Matt Zoller Seitz (@mattzollerseitz), RogerEbert.com

The best biographical movie I’ve ever seen was “32 Short Films About Glenn Gould,” because it gets the furthest away from traditional biographical movie structures and has a constant sense of surprise.

Sarah Marrs (@Cinesnark), LaineyGossip.com, Freelance

I’m giving this one to “Amadeus”. It’s not 100% accurate — no biopic is — but where “Amadeus” fudges details it does so in service of its theme. This movie has more to say about competition and rivalry than most sports movies, and it’s one of the only Great Man biopics to observe its subject from the outside. By centering on Salieri, a master in his own right,

‘Transparent’ Will Conclude With a Musical Episode, Jill Soloway Teases ‘La La Land’ by Way of ‘Yentl’

‘Transparent’ Will Conclude With a Musical Episode, Jill Soloway Teases ‘La La Land’ by Way of ‘Yentl’
There has been much speculation surrounding the final season of “Transparent,” the Amazon Original series created by Jill Soloway. The show’s future was in limbo after the departure of star Jeffrey Tambor, who was fired by Amazon following allegations of sexual harassment on set (Tambor denies the allegations). In an interview with The New York Times, Soloway promised a fitting finale for the Emmy-winning series — complete with musical numbers.

“It will hopefully feel like ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ mixed with ‘La La Land’ mixed with ‘Flight of the Conchords’ with something more Jewish thrown in,” Soloway said. “A little ‘Yentl.’”

Transparent” was based on Soloway’s lived experience of seeing a parent transition, and Soloway and their sister, Faith Soloway, had been kicking around the musical idea long before “Transparent.”

“This idea of music rescuing our family was all there,” Soloway said. “So we’re like, Let’s just keep blowing on the flame.

‘Daredevil’ Season 3 Goes Back To Basics And Shows Marvel TV Has Some Life Left In It Yet [Review]

In 2015, “Daredevil” marked the first series in the Netflix and Marvel TV partnership. With its decidedly dark take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and stylish, unique action, the fledgling superhero series drew critical acclaim and became an instant hit for the streaming service. However, over the next three years, Netflix/Marvel’s iffy output —new shows, returning seasons of previous series’ and the highly-anticipated team-up “The Defenders”— wavered heavily in quality.
