'A Quiet Place' Hopes to Hold off Newcomers and Return to Weekend #1

'A Quiet Place' Hopes to Hold off Newcomers and Return to Weekend #1
Audiences may already be looking ahead to Avengers: Infinity War, but this weekend could feature an interesting battle among the top three. While we're expecting A Quiet Place to return to the weekend's #1 spot, the race could be a little closer should Rampage hold on better than expected or if Amy Schumer's new comedy I Feel Pretty outperforms expectations. The weekend also sees the release of Fox Searchlight's Super Troopers 2 and Lionsgate's release of Traffik into a moderate number of locations. Beginning with A Quiet Place, the horror/thriller has already brought in nearly $110 million and is poised to top recent horror hits Split and The Conjuring. With Paramount adding another 219 locations for a total of 3,808 theaters, we're anticipating a 36% drop and a three-day right around $21 million. Come the end of the weekend the film should top $130 million domestically. Look for Dwayne Johnson's Rampage to

In a move widely criticized in the Russian artistic community, the country's culture ministry sided with the prosecutors and supported their request for the extension of Serebrennikov's house arrest.

The director now won’t be making it to the festival, which runs May 8-19.

The case against Serebrennikov and several other people involved with the theater company Sedmaya Studia, which he used to head, was opened in...

2019 Oscars: Best Picture Predictions

Last year, Petty Jenkins’ DC comic-book movie “Wonder Woman” far exceeded expectations of quality, critical acclaim, and box office, but was shut out of the Oscar race. That won’t happen with Marvel’s “Black Panther,” which should ride the swells of worldwide acclaim and blockbuster status to become a Best Picture Oscar contender. But it will be a challenge for Disney to push this Marvel superhero success beyond the technical categories. They will need to convince critics, guilds, and Oscar voters that Ryan Coogler’s achievement rises to the level of art.

Comic-book epics rarely yield major Oscar nominations.Heath Ledger’s posthumously win as Supporting Actor for Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” entry “The Dark Knight” in 2008 was an anomaly; if superhero movies are in the running, it’s usually for VFX and technical nods. They even win some, especially with the original iteration, before it’s a full-fledged franchise.

Dwayne Johnson Refutes IndieWire’s ‘Rampage’ Box-Office Takeaway, But Both Sides Are Right — Analysis

Dwayne Johnson Refutes IndieWire’s ‘Rampage’ Box-Office Takeaway, But Both Sides Are Right — Analysis
It would be exciting to be noticed by any major Hollywood player, but even more so from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who is as smart as he is successful. And when he tweets, he deserves an answer.

Tom, mi amigo

Our projected domestic opening was always $35m. We exceeded at 35.7m. Projected worldwide opening was $120m. We exceeded big w/ $151m. My personal biggest opening ever in China and 60-70% market share in many territories. No scoreboard pointing yet my friend

Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) April 19, 2018

His tweet responded to my just-published article about “Rampage” and how it positioned him as a contender for the biggest star in movies (particularly in domestic play). He took aim at the headline. So, a response is in order.

The headline synthesized the story’s message, which focused on his film’s domestic performance. “Rampage” was #1 for the weekend, and indeed met and slightly exceeded domestic projections.

“It starts with an idea in her head,” said Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jason Reitman on how the ball started rolling with screenwriter Diablo Cody on their latest feature Tully, “and this will frustrate the shit out of you, but she had two sentences of a movie and six weeks later a script showed up, and that was the shooting draft.” Emphasizing Cody’s raw talent, Reitman added that Cody isn’t the type of writer that works with index cards rather “she knows what the first…

Can ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Top ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Record Box Office Opening?

Can ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Top ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Record Box Office Opening?
It’s undisputed that “Avengers: Infinity War” will have a monstrous opening at the box office. The question is: How high can it go?

Initial tracking indicated that the superhero adventure would launch to $175 million to $200 million, but projections have since increased to between $190 million and $235 million-plus. If those numbers continue to increase, “Infinity War” could be eyeing the highest premiere of all time.

2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” currently boasts the biggest opening weekend with $248 million, and went on to haul over $2 billion. Only five films in history have hit the $200 million mark in their debuts.

At the very least, “Infinity War” could have the top opening for a Marvel movie. That title currently belongs to the original “Avengers” film, which launched in 2012 with $207 million.

“Infinity War” looks to be another win for the Disney-owned Marvel, building on the recent success of “Black Panther’s” massive $202 million opening.

‘Wild Wild Country’: Mark Duplass and Filmmakers On Sheela’s Regrets, and If She’s a Psychopath — Turn It On Podcast

‘Wild Wild Country’: Mark Duplass and Filmmakers On Sheela’s Regrets, and If She’s a Psychopath — Turn It On Podcast
Mark Duplass admits that he can identify a bit with Ma Anand Sheela, the focus of Netflix’s buzzworthy docuseries “Wild Wild Country.”

The personal secretary to cult leader Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, Sheela didn’t initially come to Oregon in the early 1980s to cause trouble. But after her attempts to build Rajneeshpuram — a multi-million dollar utopia in a remote part of the state — were met with resistance, she went on the offensive.

For Duplass, who executive produced “Wild Wild Country,” Sheela’s resolve kind of reminds him of his early days in filmmaking.

“Sheela started with ideological love and excitement to build this community, which is very similar to how I came into independent cinema,” Duplass told IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast. “I just want to make my creative stuff and make it good. But then Sheela started to get threatened and she accidentally realized that she was

How The Parr Family Home You’ll Want To Own In ‘Incredibles 2’ Came To Be

Emeryville, CA – One aspect of CG animation that never truly gets the praise it deserves is the incredibly detailed production design that often goes into each film. It’s mostly because of a perception that because animated films are digitally fashioned that somehow less work must go into it. Sure, there are teamsters spending hours building physical sets for non-animated films as we speak, but it’s a rare production that doesn’t use some pre-existing locale or building in some capacity.
