Amen Corner. Butler Cabin. The azaleas. The green jacket. “A tradition unlike any other.” Golf’s first major of 2024, the 88th Masters Tournament, tees off at hallowed Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia with the first round on Thursday, April 11. This year, the par-5 second hole (“Pink Dogwood”) has been lengthened by 10 yards. The first and second rounds are on ESPN (streaming on the ESPN App), and the third and final rounds are on CBS (...

Olympia Fields, Ill, Aug 20 (Ians) Scottie Scheffler made a bunch of birdies in his 6-under 64 that gave him a share of the lead with Matt Fitzpatrick (66) in a BMW Championship that is wide open.
Fitzpatrick looked set for the lead but fell into a tie on the 18th when he went from the bunker to the rough and after coming out from under a tree, he got to the edge of the green and then had a 5-foot bogey putt.
Scheffler and Fitzpatrick were at 11-under 199, one shot clear of Open Championship winner Brian Harman (67).
American Indian Sahith Theegala (69) needs a solid final round to move from his current projected 34th place to inside Top 30 for a second straight entry into the Tour Championships.
For almost half-dozen players the fight is to finish in the top 30 in the FedExCup that allows them to advance to the Tour Championship next week at East Lake.

Im and Mitchell, partnering for the first time in the only PGA Tour tournament to feature a two-man team competition, started the final round at Tpc Louisiana one off the lead and were very much in the title hunt until a back nine stumble as they signed for a closing 72.

New Orleans (USA), April 21 (Ians) South Korea’s Sungjae Im and Keith Mitchell of the U.S. certainly looked like a mismatch when teams for this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans fourballs were finalised. Im’s English is limited, although it’s improving, while Mitchell’s knowledge of Korean is practically non-existent.
However, that did not deter the newly-formed partnership as Im and Mitchell combined superbly for a 10-under 62 in the first round’s Four-Ball session to share the third spot on Thursday.
The Korean-American pairing was on fire at Tpc Louisiana with a scorecard comprising an eagle, nine birdies and a lone bogey and they sit one adrift of Wyndham Clark/Beau Hossler and Sean O’Hair/Brandon Matthews, in the only official FedExCup tournament to feature a two-player team format.

Hilton Head Island (USA), April 17 (Ians) England’s Matt Fitzpatrick halted defending champion Jordan Spieth’s attempt to successfully defend the Rbc Heritage title on the third playoff hole and pick his first victory since the U.S. Open last June.
Fitzpatrick trailed Spieth by two with five holes to play but made birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to tie for the lead at 17-under.
On the third playoff hole, Fitzpatrick hit his 9-iron to within 1 foot on the closing lighthouse hole to set up the winning birdie.
American Indian Sahith Theegala, fresh from his Top-10 finish at the Masters, where he was ninth, shot 65 and was tied fifth with Hayden Buckley.
Fitzpatrick thus won on the Pete Dye course he used to play on as a child on vacation.

Tiger Woods withdrew from the Masters before the resumption of the third round because of an injury Sunday, ending his streak of completing all 72 holes of every tournament he has played at Augusta National as a professional.
The tournament announced about 90 minutes before play began that Woods, who is still hobbled by the effects of the 2021 car accident that nearly cost him his right leg, had withdrawn. He’d limped through practice rounds early in the week and again during the first and second rounds, but the limp had become more pronounced as the weather worsened.
“I am disappointed to have to Wd this morning due to reaggravating my plantar fasciitis,” Woods said on Twitter. “Thank you to the fans and to (at)TheMasters who have shown me so much love and support. Good luck to the players today!”

Augusta, April 7 (Ians) The Augusta National Golf Club seemed to have kept its sharp bite for the latter stages of the tournament as it threw up low scores on the first day of the 87th Masters. A benign course with soft greens meant three players shared the lead with 65 each and there were 42 scores of par or better.
There was a three-way tie at the top with Viktor Hovland rising to the occasion in Tiger Woods’ company and Jon Rahm showing he is a fighter to the core and Brookes Koepka once again emphasising his focus at the Majors. They shot 65 each on the first day of the 87th Masters.
However, at Augusta, the greens always become drier, faster and tougher as the week progresses. The weather is also expected to be rough over the next three days, as rains are expected in the second half of the second day.

Austin, Texas, March 27 (Ians) Rory McIlroy holed a vital birdie putt at the 18th to win a thrilling quarter-final clash against Xander Schauffele to book his place in the last four of the 2023 Wgc-Dell Technologies Match Play.
McIlroy had to call on all match play experience to come through two extremely close matches on Saturday. He first held off Lucas Herbert in the last 16 before facing a very different challenge against Schauffele.
The 33-year-old never trailed against Herbert but was unable to relax, with the Australian staying in touch with his opponent throughout the contest before the Northern Irishman overcame a late scare to close out a two-hole victory.
But it was a completely different story against Schauffele, as McIlroy did not lead until his clutch putt from around 12 feet on the 18th green earned him a memorable one-hole win.

Rahm rose to the top of the FedEx Cup standings and Kim was second behind him.
Xander Schauffele made an albatross on the par-5 fifth hole and posted 10-under 62 to finish T3.

The Albany (Bahamas), Nov 28 (Ians) Tiger Woods makes his long-awaited return to action this week as the 15-time Major winner competes for the first time since July at the Hero World Challenge.
Before that the only events he turned up for were the Masters and the PGA Championship. Yet, between now and the end of 2022, Woods will be seen in action at the Hero World Challenge, a high-profile event that has just 20 players, all of them barring three are inside Top-23 of the world.
Two of the other three, Kevin Kisner (31) and Corey Conners, a late replacement for the injured Hideki Matsuyama (19) add to the field. Only Woods, the host is specially ‘exempt’ at 1277, not having played since the Open and only three events for a total of nine rounds – four at the Masters, three at PGA before withdrawing and two at the Open before missing the cut at St Andrews.

Las Vegas, Oct 9 (Ians) The stage is set for another mouth-watering showdown between Korean phenom Tom Kim and World No.4 Patrick Cantlay as they take their Presidents Cup rivalry into the Shriners Children’s Open finale.
Tom Kim fired a magnificent 9-under 62 at Tpc Summerlin in Las Vegas on a low-scoring Saturday to tie Cantlay, who missed a birdie putt on his last for a magical 59, as they ended the third round on 19-under 194 in the PGA Tour event.

Quail Hollow (USA), Sep 25 (Ians) The International Team dubbed as the underdogs and a pushover for the strong United States team have put up a fine fight. While the first two sessions saw them fight but lose out 1-4 and then again 1-4, they did a much better job of scoring in the third and fourth sessions.
Led by the baby-faced Kim Joohyung also called Tom Kim, because of his childhood love for toy trains, and the veteran Aussie Adam Scott, the Internationals tied the US 2-2 in the Round 3 Foursomes and then won the Round Four Fourball 3-1. Kim and Scott won both their matches, in the morning and afternoon sessions on the busy third day.
The score now stands 11-7, way better than what it was 8-2 after first two sessions. The 12 singles will be played on Sunday (late night in India).

Charlotte (North Carolina), Sep 21 (Ians) Veteran star Adam Scott has touted rookie Tom Kim as the International Team’s “little secret weapon” as they look to upset the odds against a power-packed United States in the Presidents Cup which begins on Thursday.

Atlanta (US), Aug 29 (Ians) Korean star, Sungjae Im, came agonisingly close to one of the greatest victories by an Asian player when he finished tied second alongside World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler as Rory McIlroy scripted a historic third FedExCup for a record third time as he came back from six shots to win the Tour Championships.
McIlroy, who had started the week, six shots behind top seed Scheffler under the staggered start system, fell 10 behind within two holes on the first day as he started the first round with a triple bogey and a bogey. From there he clawed back into contention. Still, he was six behind when the final round start.

San Diego (California), Jan 26 (Ians) Given that there is already an array of incentives -- for instance, a $7.5 million purse, a potential winning prize of $1.35 million, and a swanky and eclectic oceanfront locale in Southern California -- one wouldn't think that talented professional golfers would find anything else to prompt them to enter the Farmers Insurance Open golf this week.
Yet that is the case with the annual tournament in San Diego, set for January 28 to 31. Capping a remarkable career comeback, Tiger Woods won the 2019 Masters golf tournament today in Augusta, Ga., winning the green jacket for the fifth time.
At 43 years old, he becomes the second-oldest player to win golf’s most prestigious tournament. He finished today with a final round of 70, with an overall 13 under par at 275, one stroke better than Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele. He took the lead with just three holes to play after a birdie putt on the par-5 15th hole.
Woods has been troubled by back injuries and personal problems over the last few years, slowing his historic run at major tournaments. He now has 15 major tour victories and career earnings of well over $115 million.
Through nine holes, it was an up-and-down day for Woods, who entered the day at 11 under, two shots back of leader Francesco Molinari and tied with playing partner Tony Finau. But he surged ahead...
