Three key communication staffers in Sen. John Fetterman‘s (D-Pennsylvania) office have resigned and moved on to other left-leaning politicians within one month due to Fetterman’s stances on issues such as Israel and immigration.
Joe Calvello, formerly the director of communications for Fetterman’s Senate office and his 2022 campaign, has joined Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson‘s office as the chief strategy officer. Calvello expressed his excitement in a statement released by the City of Chicago, “It’s an absolute honor and a privilege to come to Chicago and serve the people of this great city.”
Nicholas Gavio, Fetterman’s deputy communication director, announced on X that he would be assuming the role of mid-Atlantic communications director for the Working Families Party. Gavio had previously worked on Fetterman’s 2022 campaign and in the office of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont).

On his Netflix series “Patriot Act,” Hasan Minhaj once laid in to TurboTax. Now he’s teamed with Sen. Elizabeth Warren to promote an alternative filing option for taxpayers as the April 15 deadline approaches.
Last month, the IRS and Treasury Department partnered on the launch the Direct File Pilot Program, which provides an option for taxpayers in 12 states to file basic income tax returns directly with the IRS rather than through an alternative online service. The program is being tested in a dozen states this year with the goal of rolling it out nationally next year. About 19 million taxpayers have the option of using the pilot program this year.
Warren (D-Mass.) posted a video collaboration with Minhaj April 9 on X, formerly known as Twitter, to promote the new option for people who don’t file complicated itemized returns.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was in a car talking with her staffers about legislation and casually scrolling through her X mentions when she saw the photo. It was the end of February, and after spending most of the week in D.C., she was looking forward to flying down to Orlando to see her mom after a work event. But everything left her mind once she saw the picture: a digitally altered image of someone forcing her to put her mouth on their genitals. Adrenaline coursed through her, and her first thought...

Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and immigrated to the United States after completing his high school education.
For months, Musk along with Republican members of Congress have criticized President Joe Biden for his immigration policies, calling for stricter border control. Musk also shared an article from the Daily Caller, founded by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, that claimed the White House was “handing out green cards” to undocumented immigrants.
In early March, Sen. Katie Britt (R-Alabama) addressed Biden’s immigration policies in her widely mocked response to the president’s State of the Union address.

Updated, with additional details from the hearing: The three major news networks largely bypassed live coverage of the latest chapter in a House GOP-led inquiry of whether to impeach President Joe Biden.
That in and of itself was a sign of just how much the effort has been losing steam, even among Republican lawmakers.
The House Oversight hearing, titled “Influence Peddling: Examining Joe Biden’s Abuse of Public Office,” featured Tony Bobulinski a former associate of Hunter Biden. Also testifying, albeit remotely, was Jason Galanis, another associate, who is in an Alabama prison serving a sentence for securities fraud.
Also testifying, as a Democratic witness, was Lev Parnas, a former associate of Rudy Giuliani. Parnas said that Giuliani, in advance of the 2020 presidential election, trafficked in false claims that the Biden’s were involved in a Ukrainian corruption scheme, and that the Russians were behind the disinformation effort.

Amid the U.S. House passing a bill this week that would ban TikTok, Bill Maher wasted no time Friday sharing his thoughts on the controversial matter.
To kick off the latest episode of HBO’s Real Time, the host joked during his monologue, “China, you know what, you can manufacture everything else that we use, but keeping our kids stupid, that’s our job.”
The bill, which passed by a vote of 352-65 in the House, would lead to a nationwide ban of the popular video app if its China-based owner, ByteDance, doesn’t sell it. Lawmakers have expressed concerns that the company’s current ownership structure is a national security threat. President Joe Biden has said if Congress passes the measure, he will sign it, however, the bill has to pass the Senate first.
Later on Real Time, during his discussion with Republican Rep. Nancy Mace and Democratic Rep.

TikTok is on the clock, as the U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill that could lead to a nationwide ban of the social media trend creator, prompting backlash from its American users and those who opposed the decision. This will come about if ByteDance – the company which owns TikTok – doesn’t sell the app, which the U.S. government believes is susceptible to Chinese influence.
The primary belief within the U.S. government is that China could access user data and also further use the app to spread misinformation. Notably, TikTok is largely used by and targeted towards teens. The bipartisan bill was approved by a vast majority, with the final vote being 352-65. It will next move to the Senate floor, while President Joe Biden has already said he will approve the ban should it reach his desk.

The first "Saturday Night Live" episodes of 2024 were underwhelming. The writers weren't able to do much with Jacob Elordi other than thirst after his handsomeness, and Dakota Johnson didn't bring much to the table other than enthusiasm for Justin Timberlake being there and a great roast of herself and Please Don't Destroy. The episodes were so bad that we didn't even do full reviews of them.
Thankfully, "SNL" finally picked up the slack with the third episode of the year, hosted by Emmy-winner Ayo Edebiri, the co-star of FX's hit series "The Bear." With a history in stand-up comedy, Edebiri has the perfect background for a late night sketch comedy series, so it should come as no surprise that she easily fit in with the rest of the "SNL" cast and delivered a fantastic episode.
So let's dig into the highs and occasional lows of Ayo Edebiri's episode of "Saturday Night Live.

Saturday Night Live host Ayo Edebiri probably wished that she could take back some mean comments made during a podcast about this week’s musical guest, Jennifer Lopez.

It all started when clips resurfaced from a 2020 episode of the podcast Scam Goddess, in which Edebiri called Lopez a “scam.”
“Her whole career is one long scam,” Edebiri said in the clip. “She thinks, like, she’s still good, even though she’s not singing for most of these songs.”

A female student bravely investigates who is behind deepfake images of her online in this compelling documentary
Germaine Greer famously said that women have no idea how much men hate them. Her maxim has a new relevance in the light of this terrifying (and enraging) documentary about the explosion of deepfake porn targeting women: famous women, of course, like Greta Thunberg and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who dare to get above themselves, but also private women who are just trying to live their lives and have been hit with this revenge-hate tactic from fantasists, ex-boyfriends, would-be boyfriends, a range of misogynists and incels.
Deepfake porn is booming and making serious money for the porn sites who refuse to take these images down and are under no legal compunction to do so. Last year, the YouTuber who goes by the name Gibi Asmr spoke publicly about experiencing a loathsome attack. Another Body’s heroine is,...

Media, entertainment and tech companies held their own in the top 25 ranking of overpaid CEOs in 2022 by nonprofit As You Sow. Live Nation’s Michael Rapino ($139 million pay package) topped the list, which also included Netflix, Paramount Global and Warner Bros Discovery, as well as Charter, Apple and Alphabet.
Overall CEO pay has been front and center this year during a season of record labor unrest from writers and actors to auto workers. We won’t know 2023 pay for most companies until next spring.
The shareholder advocacy group’s ranking of S&P 500 companies, its tenth, is particular as it starts with pay, data that’s been out for months, and calculates what it calls overpay by measuring compensation against three metrics: total shareholder return; the number of shares that are voted against a CEOs pay package at the annual meeting; and the ratio of CEO pay to median worker...

Elon Musk has offered his Starlink advanced satellite system to support internationally recognized aid organizations working in Gaza, following a communications outage as Israel steps up its military campaign in the territory.
Palestinian telecommunications company Paltel announced on Friday night that all landline, mobile and internet had been lost on the Gaza Strip after the Israeli bombing destroyed remaining fiber routes serving the territory.
The Israeli military action is in response to horrific terror attacks carried out by Palestinian extreme militant group Hamas in Southern Israel on October 7, which killed 1,400 people and resulted in more than 220 people being taken hostage.
Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Saturday that the military operation in Gaza Strip had entered a “new phase.”
Aid organizations, emergency services and media outlets operating on the Gaza Strip said the communications outage was severely hampering their work.

During his second night guest hosting “The Daily Show,” Desus Nice had a special segment for Comedy Central viewers: ripping into a guy he doesn’t like, DJ Envy.
“I know some people expect me to come on here and just do my thing where I roast people that I have beef with, but this is a serious show,” Nice said before putting on his “spectacles” and launching into some financial news. The guest late night host then proceeded to use five minutes of his eight-minute monologue to rip into DJ Envy, a man he’s been publicly feuding with since 2018.
“Wow, DJ Envy is in trouble for real estate fraud. What a serious story. It’s definitely not funny,” Nice said.
Understanding Nice’s feud with DJ Envy requires some backstory. Throughout their show and podcasting careers, Desus Nice and The Kid Mero have cultivated a reputation for being...

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the famously outspoken Democratic congresswoman from New York, says she has a simple approach to fixing the immigrant crisis in the U.S.
“The answer should really be, we should make it easier to be legal, documented and citizens of the United States of America,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
Ocasio-Cortez, talking to the “The Daily Show” host Desus Nice in an interview Monday night, said the country needs to return to how things were done in previous generations when the process for becoming an American citizen was more streamlined.
“From all parts of the political spectrum, one of the big issues that we have when it comes to immigration is the fact that we have an undocumented population,” Ocasio-Cortez said on the Comedy Central show. “Now you can fix that by trying to build a wall or you can fix that by trying to document people and create a path to citizenship.

White House hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Monday a decision to switch parties in his presidential bid by exiting the Democratic party and running as a third party Independent. The move — revealed during a rally held outside the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia that featured remarks by his actress wife Cheryl Hines of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame — was quickly denounced by members of his own family.
“The decision of our brother Bobby to run as a third party candidate against Joe Biden is dangerous to our country. Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment. Today’s announcement is deeply saddening for us. We denounce his candidacy and believe it to be perilous for our country,” reads a post shared on Instagram by his sister, Oscar nominated documentarian Rory Kennedy.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) has found herself in yet another internet feud on platform X, formerly known as Twitter, with Elon Musk, the owner.
The two have a history of engaging with each other on social media, often getting into disputes. This latest one has left Aoc feeling unsafe and violated.
A couple of days ago, Aoc compared the current and past number of immigrants coming to New York, stating that the current wave is “nothing” compared to ones that came before.
Conservative journalist Ashley St.Clair responded to Aoc’s thoughts: “Girl math is saying immigrants coming legally through Ellis Island is the same as 3 million undocumented migrants pouring through our border and costing NYC $1,000,000,000 to house migrants for free in hotels.”
Musk later tweeted in agreement with St.Clair, claiming that Aoc is “not that smart.”

Fox News host Brian Kilmeade put Elon Musk on a pedestal Friday as few anchors have done before, lauding the eccentric billionaire owner of X (formerly Twitter) as the smartest man in the United States during coverage of Musk’s visit to the southern border.
Kilmeade — as “Fox & Friends” covered Musk’s livestream Thursday from Eagle Pass, Texas — made that bold proclamation while seeming to dismiss Musk’s previous pastimes as suddenly now beneath him.
“It is a problem in our country, and this is a guy addressing a problem,” Kilmeade remarked of migrants crossing the border. “He’s not hanging out at SpaceX touring rockets or Tesla finding out about the new electric car or his tunnel program or electrodes in his brain.

As a government shutdown that could affect millions of Americans looms over Congress, House Republicans are busy launching their impeachment inquiry circus against President Joe Biden.
On Thursday, the House Oversight Committee held its first hearing of their official impeachment inquiry investigation of as-yet-unproven allegations of “abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption,” by President Biden.
The GOP invited three witnesses to testify before the committee: Justice Department official Eileen O’Connor, law professor Jonathan Turley, and forensic accountant Bruce Dubinsky.
If Republicans were looking for a bombshell first hearing, they didn’t get it.

Saturday Night Live should get pretty much a full season after the writers and the studios reached an agreement to end the strike.
The NBC show had Season 48 cut short by three episodes when the writers walked out at the beginning of May.
The show, which traditionally restarts at the very end of September or the beginning of October, is now likely to return on either October 7 or 14, pending a vote by the WGA.
Essentially, the WGA negotiating committee are expected to recommend the agreement and send it to the WGA West Board and WGA East Council for a vote, likely scheduled for Tuesday. This could potentially lift the restraining order and allow writers return to work as the deal is waiting to be ratified.
After the 2007/08 strike ended on February 12, 2008, production commenced on Season 33 of SNL on February 18 for the February 23 episode. Former SNL cast member and 30 Rock...

This post contains spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Since its very first episode, Star Trek: Lower Decks has excavated the most embarrassing parts of Star Trek lore, refusing to let even tangential parts of the franchise go forgotten. The Next Generation‘s second-worst enemy race the Pakleds became major antagonists in Lower Decks, and Boimler showed unironic appreciation for a Tom Paris commemorative plate. Heck, even the Space Fun Helmet made a brief appearance.
So it’s no surprise that Lower Decks would eventually get around to one of the great debates in Star Trek history: how do you solve a problem like Tuvix? Directed by Cliff Bole, the Voyager season two episode “Tuvix” used that old Trek standby, a transporter accident, to pose a knotty moral quandary. When an exotic plant disrupts the transporter beam carrying Vulcan security chief Tuvok and Talaxian guide/cook Neelix, the two combine into one being,...

WGA West president Meredith Stiehm is more upset with Bill Maher for resuming production without his writers on his HBO “Real Time” series than she is about similar moves from fellow talk-show hosts Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Hudson.
“There’s a distinction between Bill Maher and the others because he is a Writers Guild member,” she told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday. “He is a Writers Guild member and he’s going back to work. So, yes, a lot of people are saying that’s scabbing.”
Talk-show hosts are under a different contract than other WGA members and are not actively on strike. But most of these shows shut down in May anyway in solidarity with striking writers. The actors’ strike, which began in July and prevents guild members from promoting their work, also dried up the pool of potential guests.

Movies about the financial markets inevitably have the same problem. It simply isn’t that visually compelling watching people stare at their computers or phones and muttering expletives. Adam McKay’s The Big Short managed to avoid the pitfall thanks to its truly memorable characters and such stylistic flourishes as having Margot Robbie explain complicated financial concepts directly to the camera while lounging in a bathtub.
Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money, about the 2021 GameStop stock phenomenon fueled by individual investors driven by social media, doesn’t prove quite as successful. Nonetheless, the film receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival proves entertaining enough, thanks to its canny screenplay relating the story as a Frank Capra-style battle between the little people and the rich bigwigs hoisted by their own petards, and the fun performances by a terrific ensemble.

Documentary producer dedicated to using non-fiction storytelling to bring about change on many vital issues
Jess Search, who has died aged 54 of brain cancer, did much to shape and inspire the world of documentary film. With the colleagues who had joined her in creating the non-profit organisation Doc Society, she sought to harness the power of non-fiction storytelling to bring about change on such issues as the climate crisis and defending democracy.
The many dozens of films she funded, advised, mentored, distributed, produced or executive produced include Citizenfour (2014), about the whistleblower Edward Snowden; Virunga (2014), on protecting gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo; The Look of Silence (2014), recalling the murder of a million supposed communists in Indonesia in the mid-1960s; Knock Down the House (2019), following the campaign in which Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was elected to the House of Representatives; Cow (2021), a portrait of bovine life on the farm; and the...
