Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer is heading this June to the Banff World Media Festival, where he will be recognized with a career achievement award. Besides the award, Zimmer will also take part in an “In Conversation” panel, along with composers from the Emmy winning Bleeding Fingers Music collective that he co-founded in 2013. That will include a discussion with Anže Rozman, Ho-Ling Tang, Jacob Shea, Kara Talve and Sami Goldberg on the role of Bleeding Fingers in film and television scoring.

“Hans Zimmer has not only redefined cinematic music with his groundbreaking scores but has also revolutionized the industry through Bleeding Fingers, fostering a new generation of composers and crafting immersive soundscapes for film, television, and beyond. How Do ‘The Simpsons’ Writers Know When to Make a Musical Episode? Here Are 5 Ways to Tell
Image
It’s Musicals Week at IndieWire. With “Wicked” about to sparkle over theaters, we’re celebrating the best of the movie-musical genre.

Setting aside shows like “Glee” and “Schmigadoon,” which put song and dance at the center of every episode, few TV series have brought to life as many musical moments as “The Simpsons.” Over 35 seasons (and counting), Fox’s timeless sitcom has produced 29 musical episodes (per WikiSimpsons) and quite a few more if the parameters are expanded to include any episode featuring meaningful original music. No matter how you define a musical episode, a number of “The Simpsons” best-ever entries feature catchy melodies paired with smart (and smart-mouthed) lyrics, from “Marge vs. The Monorail” to “That ’90s Show,” “A Streetcar Named Marge” to “Cape Feare.”

Still, despite devoting more episodes to musicals than most modern series get for an entire series, “The Simpsons” is approaching 800 total episodes. Relatively speaking,...

‘The Simpsons’ Sings Musical Number About Homer Not Wanting to Buy Marge Tampons (Exclusive)
Image
“The Simpsons” has been in an experimental mode as of late, trying big swings like its “series finale” Season 36 premiere and its recent, spot-on parody of “The White Lotus.” This week, the show is once again playing with its format — via the sketch comedy-inspired “Women in Shorts” episode.

Variety has a first look (scroll down below) at one of the bits. Rather than a single storyline, the “Women in Shorts” episode will contain around 15 different vignettes. Writer Christine Nangle, who penned the episode, has a sketch background and hails from the Upright Citizens Brigade, so trying it on “The Simpsons” made sense.

“Our showrunner, Matt Selman, has been really encouraging us to take risks and break format a little bit more,” Nangle said. “I thought it would be cool to do an episode that feels a little bit like a sketch show, and delving into the lives of the women of the town.

Lord Of The Flies Series Adaptation Coming From BBC – With A Hans Zimmer Score
Image
With Lost back in the air for its 20th anniversary, and the wait for Yellowjackets Season 3 stretching on, you might be looking for your next desert island TV fix. And the BBC has picked up your message in a bottle: the broadcaster (along with Australian streamer Stan) is preparing to strand a cast of kids on a faraway shore in a new four-part series take on Lord Of The Flies. William Golding’s novel is being adapted by none other than the perpetually-busy Jack Thorne, with director Marc Munden behind the camera. While the series was announced last year, new details are emerging now that it's started filming in Malaysia.

Most notably, Hans Zimmer has signed on to provide a score – along with Kara Talve – meaning this take on the castaway tale should sound suitably epic. “Hans has already shared his first sketches for the score, which are hugely inspiring.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Music and Lyrics
Image
In 2018, “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul missed out on breaking the record for fastest Egot acquisition by coming up short on their first Emmy bid for “A Christmas Story Live!”. From that point, however, they still had eight years left to achieve said record, and they could end up doing so with two years to spare now that they are in the running for the 2024 Best Music and Lyrics Emmy.

Pasek and Paul’s new nominated song from “Only Murders in the Building” is one of three comedic ones in its lineup, the others of which were written for “Girls5eva” and “Saturday Night Live.” Also in the mix are more somber tunes from the miniseries “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and “True Detective: Night Country.”

In order to determine how Pasek and Paul will fare on this momentous outing, let’s take...

Kara Talve (‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ composer) on writing music for people ‘in the darkest place of all time’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“If we are sentimental, we will fail,” reveals twice Emmy-nominated “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” composer Kara Talve about her initial discussions with co-composer Hans Zimmer and the series’ creative team and their shared desire to steer clear of overly sentimentalizing the drama. “The imagery in this show speaks for itself. The story speaks for itself, right? I mean, we know that the horrors that happened at Auschwitz. It’s just unimaginable and because of that, the music itself has to also be unimaginable and unthinkable,” she explains during our recent webchat. “We really wanted to create this abstract environment that subtly supported the characters, let them lead the performance and never be epic because it just immediately feels wrong and disrespectful. And the last thing we wanted to do was overstep, especially in a series like this. It’s not just a story. It’s literally somebody’s truth, so...

EGOTs In The Building? Emmy-Nominated Songwriters Benj Pasek & Justin Paul Go For The Crown
Image
Update, with statement: A lot was riding on Steve Martin’s near-superhuman ability to spit out an error-free tongue-twisting patter song at crucial moments of the Broadway-themed season of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. Martin did it flawlessly, but the stakes aren’t over yet: The song, “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” has just been Emmy nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics — and a win finally would crown songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul with the Egot laurel.

You can watch Martin perform the song in the Season 3 episode below.

A second pair of songwriters credited on the song, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have plenty of Tonys and Grammys but not the necessary Oscar that would put them into Emmy’s Egot race.

Emmy Song Category Draws Submissions From the Weeknd, Sara Bareilles, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Ronson, Pasek & Paul and Other Big Music Names
Image
Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are on the verge of Egot status… that is, if Emmy voters nominate their song from “Only Murders in the Building” and it winds up winning three months from now.

Pasek and Paul — already Oscar winners for “La La Land” and Tony and Grammy winners for “Dear Evan Hansen” — could finally manage that feat with the witty comic patter song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” sung by Steve Martin and co-written with fellow Tony and Grammy winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for the third season of the Hulu comedy-drama.

They are among the many prominent songwriters who have entered songs in this year’s Emmy competition. Voting began Thursday, with approximately 550 members of the Television Academy music peer group eligible to vote in seven music categories. Voting ends June 24 and the nominations will be announced July 17.

Another pair of Oscar and Grammy winners,...

The Tattooist of Auschwitz: The Meaning Behind Barbra Streisand's Closing Song Explained
Image
The Tattooist of Auschwitz portrays a powerful love story set in a dark time, enhanced by a touching soundtrack. Barbra Streisand's song "Love Will Survive" pays tribute to the Holocaust victims and captures the essence of hope. The emotional song beautifully reflects how Lali and Gita's love endured the hardships of the Holocaust.

Peacock's new drama The Tattooist of Auschwitz tells a heart-wrenching story of love in an extremely dark place, which is helped by one song added to the show's soundtrack. The series is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Heather Morris, and looks at the life of Lali Solokov, a Slovakian Jew who was imprisoned in the Auschwitz death camp during World War II; during his imprisonment, he is forced to work, tattooing each new prisoner with a number. During his time in the camp, Lali encounters a young woman named Gita, and they...

‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ Review: Melanie Lynskey and Harvey Keitel in Peacock’s Harrowing Holocaust Drama
Image
The Tattooist of Auschwitz has a distinctive way of way of marking death. Each time someone passes, the drama pauses on a moving portrait of their face in life, against the grim toll of a bell. Sometimes, it’s how we learn a character we’ve been following for several episodes has been killed. At others, it’s the only good look we get at people whose names we never even learn before they’re slaughtered.

Always, it’s hard to bear. Their eyes bore right through the camera, their expressions unreadable and their thoughts unknowable. Each stare nonetheless lands as a plea — for us to notice, to remember, to not look away — and the Peacock miniseries takes seriously the responsibility to bear witness.

But the gravity of a noble mission can also become an albatross. In spite of the touching romance at its heart, The Tattooist of Auschwitz feels...

Barbra Streisand Records First-Ever Song for a TV Series, for End Credits of ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’
Image
Barbra Streisand has released her first song in six years, titled “Love Will Survive” — and it’s her first work for an onscreen project in 12 years, since she herself last appeared in a movie, 2012’s “The Guilt Trip.”

“Love Will Survive,” composed by Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve, will be Streisand’s end title anthem for the credits of Peacock and Sky limited series “The Tattooist of Auschwitz,” based on the WWII-set novel of the same name. Melanie Lynskey portrays real-life author Heather Morris, who interviewed Holocaust survivor Lali Sokolov (Harvey Keitel) about meeting his future wife Gina (Anna Próchniak) in a concentration camp. The novel is inspired by the real-life love story of Lali and Gita Sokolov, who met while prisoners in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during the Holocaust. Ed Sheeran, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Land Emmy Music Nominations; John Williams, ‘Daisy Jones’ Songs Among the Snubs
Image
Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.

Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.

Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

First Look: ‘Prehistoric Planet’ Season 2 Teaser Trailer and Poster
Image
Apple TV+’s groundbreaking Prehistoric Planet will return for season two on May 22, 2023. Ahead of its premiere, the streaming service released the first teaser trailer for the award-winning natural history event series.

Season two will feature dinosaurs that have never been seen on the screen, including:

Isisaurus – An Indian sauropod that made its home in an extreme volcanic region known as the Deccan Traps, laying eggs in volcanic heated terrain. Pectinodon – a fierce hunter and fond parent, this bird-like North American feathered dinosaur was part of the troodontid family. A sharp-clawed, long-legged predator, it was an adaptable hunter, its teeth and jaws suggesting that many sorts of small animals would have been on the menu. Quetzalcoatlus and Hatzegopteryx – The biggest creatures ever to soar the skies, these gargantuan pterosaurs (prehistoric flying reptiles) were the size of a giraffe or small aircraft and are some of “Prehistoric Planet’s” most charismatic characters.

How ‘Prehistoric Planet’ Reimagined the Nature Doc
Image
Click here to read the full article.

A decade ago, while on location in Africa with natural history documentary icon David Attenborough, Michael Gunton, who serves as creative director of factual at BBC Studios, had the idea to do another series that goes back in time — effectively BBC’s Planet Earth but with dinosaurs. What then seemed impossible proved to be a real option in more recent years with the evolution of technology and by teaming with innovative filmmaker Jon Favreau.

The result is Prehistoric Planet, an ambitious five-part Apple TV+ docuseries produced by the BBC Studios Natural History Unit and narrated by Attenborough that takes viewers back 66 million years to the late Cretaceous period and features nearly 100 CG dinosaurs and other animals.

Series producer/showrunner Tim Walker credits Favreau (who executive produced the series with Gunton) as the one who handed the team the “keys to the time machine.

Hans Zimmer on Scoring ‘Prehistoric Planet,’ and Why the Series Wouldn’t Exist Without Jon Favreau’s ‘Lion King’
Image
Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer admits he’s been up and working since 3 a.m. when he calls Variety from London. With his work ethic, it’s no surprise — he’s currently in the middle of his European tour, and still found time this past year to pen scores for “Dune,” HBO’s “The Survivor,” “No Time to Die,” “Army of Thieves,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and Apple TV+’s “Prehistoric Planet.”

For the natural history series “Prehistoric Planet,” Zimmer collaborated with collective Bleeding Fingers Music and co-composers Anže Rozman and Kara Talve says the key was finding music that resonated today.

Rozman of Bleeding Fingers Music says, “We decided to try to make instruments out of bones, dinosaur bone replicas, fossils, and rocks. We bought a bunch of these at the shop in Sedona and started pondering what kind of creation we could make. We enlisted the help of Chaz (Charles...
