First-time director David Sf Wilson's "Bloodshot" is an origin story of the eponymous superhero, a popular Valiant Comics Character, and revenge propels its plot. Set in an unnamed metropolis of darkly gleaming skyscrapers, the film is surely fun to watch, but it never feels grounded in reality. You never feel like there is anything at stake either, because we are given to understand that our hero is invincible. He does not get damaged by virtually anything, so it makes the action sequences that play out feel like a breeze to watch.
Jumping straight into the action, the story pivots around the tough-as-nails Us Marine Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel). After he and his wife are murdered, Garrison is resurrected by a team of scientists working for an organisation called Rst, which is spearheaded by Dr. Emil Harting (Guy Pearce). At Rst, wounded American soldiers are treated to become "improved, enhanced warriors". Apparently,...

Dave Wilson’s Bloodshot adaptation is a sanitized superhero origin story that never elevates itself above preconceived expectations. Vin Diesel plays deadly serious despite the film’s tone crying for a more energetic leading protagonist. Tank tops, bulgy biceps, and hard stares detail a comic book movie that lifelessly jumps from page to screen. Dialogue only favors one eccentric hacker, action interludes are frustrating, whirly-blurry messes – hell, I can’t recall the name “Bloodshot” uttered once. Frankly, this could be retitled Angry Science Experiment Man and no editing room modifications would be needed. Worst of all? Cinema’s most unforgivable sin is committed: the fate of being forgettable.
Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel) awakens on a medical bed within Dr. Emil Harting’s (Guy Pearce) Rst industrial facility. A soldier pronounced dead, brought back to life with Harting’s nanotechnology bloodstream injections. Garrison suffers from amnesia, but as triggers unlock past traumas,...

"You are My weapon!" Sony has launched a second "international" trailer for upcoming action sci-fi movie Bloodshot, due out in just a few months. This is yet another comic book adaptation, about a slain soldier who is re-animated with superpowers based on nanotechnology injected into him. It's based on the comic book character known as Bloodshot, published in various Valiant Comics, the first appearance in 1992. Vin Diesel stars as Ray Garrison, a soldier recently killed in action and brought back to life as the superhero "Bloodshot" by the Rst corporation. This seems to be a twisted mix of Upgrade and RoboCop, along with some of the usual Vin Diesel tropes you might expect. The full cast includes Guy Pearce, Eiza González, Sam Heughan, Toby Kebbell, Lamorne Morris, Talulah Riley, Johannes Haukur Johannesson, and Siddharth Dhananjay. This looks like a killer action movie - derivative but still badass nonetheless. Here's the...

Undone Season 2 is officially in the works at Amazon!
The retail monolith’s streaming platform, Amazon Prime Video, has ordered a second season for Undone, the rotoscope animation drama series, which debuted its 8-episode inaugural season this past September to wide acclaim. The order was made as part of Amazon Studios’ overall deal with Kate Purdy, who co-created the series with Raphael Bob-Wakseberg. As the co-creators collectively express in a statement:
"It's been wonderful to share Undone and have people watching become part of the experience as they interpret the show through their own perceptions of reality. We are thrilled Amazon Studios is giving us the opportunity to keep exploring this world and these characters, and we look forward to seeing where the story takes us next — but since time is a construct,...

"They've been manipulating you... What you think is real, sometimes ain't." Sony Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for action sci-fi movie Bloodshot, another comic book adaptation, this one about a slain soldier (and mobster?) who is re-animated with superpowers. It's based on the comic book character known as Bloodshot, published in various Valiant Comics, the first appearance in 1992. Vin Diesel stars as Ray Garrison, a soldier recently killed in action and brought back to life as the superhero "Bloodshot" by the Rst corporation. Netflix’s BoJack Horseman has been one of the best shows on television since it debuted in 2014. It is a hilarious satire of celebrity and show business, while also being a profoundly sad portrait of depression, loneliness and substance abuse. Virtually the only complaint I’ve ever heard from anyone who’s watched more than the first few episodes is that its visual style is intentionally primitive, bordering on ugly. (And even that allows for elaborate background gags and bizarrely compelling designs of the show’s many animal/human hybrid characters.

One of the first things you see in “Undone” is a car crash. One of the last things you see, in the pilot at least, is a car crash. One of the things you see the most over five episodes of Season 1 — in a myriad of different ways, interrupting various other moments — is this same exact car crash, where Alma (Rosa Salazar) gets T-boned after running a stop sign because she sees… something… on the side of the road. That “something” holds great meaning to the central mystery, but, as it first appears in the show, it’s just a few brush strokes on the giant canvas that is “Undone”; it’s an important part, but also a means to the bigger picture — and I’m not just talking about the show’s groundbreaking format.

Let’s try a pitch: A streaming half-hour animated series from Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy that tackles the monotony of adult life, the burden of relationships, the trauma we inherit from our families, mental illness, and depression. So basically, Bojack Horseman, you might say. Not quite. A talking horse doesn’t even begin to touch the mind-bending aspects of Amazon’s new series, Undone.
Undone centers on Alma, played by Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel), a 28-year old going through the motions with her boyfriend Sam (Siddharth Dhananjay). Alma starts becoming restless about her boring, seemingly predetermined future when her sister Becca (Angelique Cabral) gets engaged. After a blowout fight with Becca, which once again circles back to the untimely death of their father Jacob (Bob Odenkirk...

"Living here, you'll see, time has a way of standing still..." Dualist Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled A Name Without a Place, the latest film from filmmaker Kenny Riches. This is an odd one. After a young man arrives in the Florida Keys, he meets the girl of his dreams. They escape troubles with the locals and stumble upon a secret estate of a narcissistic recluse, who may or may not have found the fountain of youth. Starring Charlotte Best and Bryan Burton as the main couple, Emma Lee and Gordon, plus Patrick Fugit, Elizabeth McGovern, Chris Parnell, David Sullivan, Siddharth Dhananjay, and Christine McCarthy. Well, this looks like an interesting film, not like anything else we've ever seen. I am digging Fugit's crazy-but-cool performance. Amazon Studios has released the trailer for Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s rotoscope animation series “Undone,” which we’ve just learned is set to premiere on Sept. 13.
“Undone” is described by Amazon as a “groundbreaking and genre bending animated series about a young woman’s complex journey to unlock her past and solve the mystery of her father’s death.”
Here is the series description:
Alma Winograd-Diaz (Rosa Salazar) takes her mundane life one day at a time until a near fatal accident induces visions of her late-father, Jacob (Bob Odenkirk). Through these persistent visions he urges her to tap into a mysterious ability that allows her to travel through space and time with the hopes of preventing his untimely death. This quest challenges Alma’s relationships and brings into question her mental wellbeing with those closest to her.

Stars: Danielle Macdonald, Bridgett Everett, Siddharth Dhananjay, Mamoudou Athie, Cathy Moriarty | Written and Directed by Geremy Jasper
Written, directed and largely composed by Geremy Jasper, a New Jersey music video director making his first feature, Patti Cake$ is an exceptionally well made film, displaying the sort of rawness and authenticity only possible in street-level filmmaking. It’s a fresh take on some very familiar underdog story traits.
23-year-old Patricia (Danielle Macdonald), Aka Patti, lives a meagre existence of microwave meals, tinned lager and daytime TV. She lives with her mother, Barbara (Bridgett Everett) – a “friend” to many a local gentleman – and her sarcastic, chain-smoking Nana (Cathy Moriarty). Patti dreams of taking the star-studded crown from her hero, O-z (Sahr Ngaujah), and becoming “Killa P”, the sickest rapper on the East Coast. But her reality is merely sick: her family’s declining health is costing them dearly in insurance bills.

It used to be “can a white boy sing the blues,” but now it is “can a white girl rap,” in the Sundance hit Patti Cake$. Of course, Patricia Dombrowski, aka Patti Cake$, isn’t a girl any more, she’s a 23-year-old overweight white woman who feels her teenage dream of being a hip-hop star fading away as she remains stuck in lower working-class suburban New Jersey.
Patti Cake$ is surprising, endearing, and inspiring film about outsiders, misfits and outcasts but with a women-centric twist. Much of the film’s appeal rests more on the cast performances than its familiar struggling-musician story. As Patti, Australian actress Danielle Macdonald seems like an unremarkable dreamer at first, but Macdonald suddenly transforms when she starts to rap, radiating charisma, intelligence and defiance in equal measures. Even those who are not rap fans while find her energy hard to resist.

Chicago – How does a filmmaker create a movie about a white girl in New Jersey dreaming of being a hip-hop star? He takes the beats from his own life admiration of the music genre and fleshes out a working class story about pushing back against the odds. Patti Cake$ arrives in UK cinemas off the back of some richly deserved acclaim. Here's why it's worth a watch...
Like its title character, there are many things about Patti Cake$ - the Sundance smash hit that’s now about to reach a wider audience - that almost force you to dismiss it. It’s a festival darling, which are notoriously hit or miss, and you can pretty much guess how the story will play out based on the synopsis alone.
The film follows Patti aka Killa P (Danielle Macdonald), a wannabe rapper who spends her days scraping together enough cash to pay her grandmother’s medical bills, occasionally taking her out for walks and hanging out with her only real friend, Jheri (Siddharth Dhananjay). When they meet oddball Basterd (Mamoudou Athie) holed up in his anarchist shack in the woods, they decide to make a real go of things with their now-unique collective sound.

"I thought I could be someone..." "You already are." A second official international trailer has arrived for the festival hit Patti Cake$, starring Australian actress Danielle Macdonald as an overweight wannabe rapper from New Jersey. The story follows "Killa P" and her struggles as she tries to make a name for herself in a town that doesn't care much about anyone, especially someone who looks like her. The cast includes Cathy Moriarty, Siddharth Dhananjay, Mamoudou Athie, and Bridget Everett. This wasn't exactly one of my favorite films of Sundance (read my review) but it's raucous and definitely entertaining, with a good message and lots of heart. This played at both the Sundance & Cannes Film Festivals this year, and will make lots of noise upon release. I like this trailer because they don't have to hold back on all the language. Here's the newest international trailer for Geremy Jasper's Patti...

This year’s Sundance Film Festival once again brought the best of indie cinema to snowy Salt Lake City in Utah and around this time of year, we start to see some of the best-received films getting cinema releases in the Us and, hopefully, in the UK as well.
Indeed the London version of the film festival takes place in London in a couple of weeks and some of the treats will be shown to UK critics and audiences, but some of those who were subject of big bidding wars will be heading straight to cinemas soon. One such film is Patti Cake$, a brilliant coming-of-age tale from music director Geremy Jasper, making his feature film bow – we’ve been lucky enough to see the film here at Hug Towers and can only reiterate the acclaim it’s been getting.

From the streets of New Jersey, here comes Patti Cake$. Directed by Geremy Jasper, his debut follows Patricia Dumbrowski (Danielle MacDonald), a woman from Bergen County, New Jersey seeking fame through hip-hop. Patti Cake$ premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. In our review, we praised the performance from newcomer MacDonald but was underwhelmed by the film’s predictable beats: “While there’s an infectious energy to the process of musical creation and an impressive lead performance from newcomer Danielle MacDonald, the feature debut of Geremy Jasper is ultimately hindered by predictable story beats and a cynical outlook at the world it’s capturing.”
For Geremy Jasper, a music video director making his feature debut, the film was particularly personal. “It’s probably about as autobiographical a story as I’m capable of telling,” Jasper said during Sundance. “I wanted to get out for as long as I can remember…...

Almost six months after Geremy Jasper’s “Patti Cake$” won raves at the Sundance Film Festival — and sold to Fox Searchlight for roughly $10 million — the first trailer is finally here. Overseas breakout star Danielle Macdonald stars as the title character, a lower-middle-class cater waiter who dreams of being a rap sensation. The thing is, she’s got the skills. Cabaret performer, “Inside Amy Schumer” player and overall national treasure Bridget Everett stars as her nay-saying mom, whose own dreams of rock stardom never came to pass. Yo, this film is dope. Patti Cake$ (yes, the title is actually spelled with the $ sign) is an original comedy about a chubby white girl in New Jersey who dreams of being a famous rapper. Australian actress Danielle Macdonald plays Patti, a young, impoverished, overweight woman living with her mom and grandmom in "Dirty Jersey". Her best friend is an Indian man, played by newcomer Siddharth Dhananjay, who works as a pharmacist. Together they spend their nights spitting rhymes, catching shows, and strolling the streets of New Jersey with the skyscrapers of Manhattan taunting them in the distance. When they meet a musician known as "Basterd", played by Mamoudou Athie, they realize this might be their chance to make it big. Patti Cake$ is one of those uniquely Sundance films that seems destined to break out of the festival and find an audience. We've seen films about wannabe rappers before,...

Rhymes, beats, and an audience are all that Patricia Dombrowski requires to achieve her dreams of rap stardom. She already has the former, composed from her personal experience on the thuggish streets and in the dreary bars of Dirty Jersey. Patti Cake$ is about the hard-fought search for the other elements. While there’s an infectious energy to the process of musical creation and an impressive lead performance from newcomer Danielle MacDonald, the feature debut of Geremy Jasper is ultimately hindered by predictable story beats and a cynical outlook at the world it’s capturing.

“This shit’s so confusing,” raps North Jersey native Patti (Danielle Macdonald) early in “Patti Cake$,” adding, “Want my life like a movie.” Mission accomplished: The rousing debut of writer-director Geremy Jasper channels his music video experience into a winning musical ride that hits some familiar beats while using them in service of a satisfying tale of big dreams and funky talent.
Aussie star Macdonald has a few movie credits to her name (including “The East” and Amy Berg’s “Every Secret Thing”), but she emerges as a genuine breakout in the transformative role of a hard-edged Jersey kid with an uncanny talent for turning her ambitions into energetic freestyle rap. When she isn’t honing her skills, she’s grappling with her alcoholic mother (the great New York underground theater performer Bridget Everett), herself an expert songstress whose dreams faded long ago, and grimacing her way through a dead-end catering gig.
