Emma J. Gilbertson is a queer working class writer/director originally from Liverpool, and a graduate of the prestigious NFTS Directing Fiction course and Channel 4 Scholar. Their graduation film: Requiem was the Winner of Best Postgraduate Drama at the Royal Television Society Student awards 2022. As well as being selected at multiple BAFTA qualifying festivals. Since Graduating from the course Emma has shadowed the legendary Mary Harron (Dir. American Psycho) and directed music videos for rising rockstar Cody Frost. They are represented by Independent Talent, and are developing several original feature ideas and interested in Television Directing.

They are primarily interested in creating stories about the working-class experience, female identity and queerness. Their films also feature dance, music and spoken word. Growing up in Liverpool has given them a unique sense of humour and perspective and Emma currently resides above a pub.

Before attending the NFTS Emma interned at Hurricane Films in Liverpool in script development and worked as a self shooter and editor at Liverpool FACT. With support from Screen South, Emma directed their first film: Crashing Waves. Which went on to be broadcast on Channel 4's "Random Acts." The Film was nominated for the reputable Iris Prize, gained a Vimeo Staff pick and selected for #fivefilmsforfreedom presented by Arts-British Council in partnership with BFI Flare.
