As The Voice brought to a close its Season 25 Knockouts Monday night, the narrative that was being built around one contestant in particular became crystal clear: “Look here, folks! We’ve got the next Taylor Swift on our hands!” But did the show really? I… was not buying the hype. Were you? Let’s go over the evening’s performances, then we’ll have ourselves a little chitchat in the comments.

This is already shaping up to be an interesting year for Best New Artist at the Grammys. The category might lack a clear frontrunner so far, as it is early in the year, but we do have some serious contenders who might pick up more steam closer to voting time this fall. Plus, an open field might make it even more interesting, unlike years where the winner was rather obvious like when Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish prevailed.
TikTok breakout Benson Boone might be positioning himself as the one to beat. He had already achieved some recognition before 2024 with his viral tracks “In the Stars” and “Ghost Town,” the latter of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100. However, he’s having his big break this year with the massive “Beautiful Things.” The track has led the global charts and so far peaked at number-three on the Hot 100. Boone seems like...

It was six years ago when former Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow told journalists backstage at the Grammys in 2018 that women needed to “step up” for their representation at the show after only men won out in the major categories. Phoebe Bridgers hasn’t forgotten.
“I have something to say about women,” Bridgers said after Rolling Stone asked her and her fellow Boygenius members Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus about women shaping the future of rock music when they came to the Grammy press room. “The ex-president of the Recording Academy,...

The Amazon Prime Video series “The Summer I Turned Pretty” has made a splash with its loaded soundtrack. By now it is safe to say that “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and Taylor Swift go hand in hand because author and show creator Jenny Han has made it so.
The first season had five Swift songs ranging from her “Lover” album to “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” and the Season 1 trailer debuted “This Love (Taylor’s Version)” from the yet-to-be-released re-recorded “1989.” Season 2’s teaser was set to “August,” and then the official trailer debuted “Back to December (Taylor’s Version)” shortly before “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” was released July 7. Only time will tell if Season 2 ties Season 1 for how many Taylor Swift songs it contains.
The sequel season’s summer-y soundtrack also contains hits from repeat artists Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler the Creator, Caroline Polachek and more. A Fleetwood Mac ballad punctuates a particularly emotional scene,...

‘Sistas’ Actress Mignon Wants People to Heal or “You’re Just Going to Keep Living in the Same Cycle”
Tyler Perry’s comedy-drama series Sistas follows the lives of a friendship group, whose storylines are conversation-starters in person and online. The sister circle includes Andrea “Andy” Barnes (Kj Smith), Daniella “Danni” King (Mignon), Karen Mott (Ebony Obsidian) and Sabrina Hollins (Novi Brown), who are dealing with relationship issues, career choices and friendship drama that many can relate to.
This season, Danni is fresh out of a breakup with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Preston (Trinity Whiteside), facing her abuser and trying to confirm if one of her best friends is dead. But despite her trauma, one thing viewers can consistently expect Danni to provide is comedic relief. “People don’t always understand the method to her madness because I mean, just quite frankly, it’s kind of a luxury to be vulnerable,” Mignon says of her character. “It’s 100 percent a defense mechanism” from her deep pain.

They’re right that Sza’s sophomore album “Sos” has had consistent success on the charts and overwhelming support from critics and fans. The Grammy for Best New Artist is often criticized. Some think the award is a curse, and oftentimes goes to artists who don’t end up being relevant for long. Another common criticism is that it’s often late to the party on certain acts, nominating them after their peak or a year or two after they were actually new to the music scene. Still, in the grand scheme of things, many of the nominations or wins artists get, even if they’re late, are deserved. Here are four artists who got their Bna spotlight a bit later than they should’ve.

If you check predictions for the 2022 Grammy nominations, you’ll see that Måneskin were pretty much locked in for a Best New Artist nomination. This made total sense: the band had a banner year with their single “Beggin’” and their international success from Eurovision.

Kardinal Offishall still remembers a time when nobody wanted to hire him. And he means nobody.
“Everybody turned me down: Gap, Foot Locker,” the Toronto-born rapper and music executive tells Et Canada. “The only thing I never applied for was McDonald’s, and that’s because there’s no way I was going to work at McDonald’s. But everybody fronted on me, so you know, it was music or bust.”

Produced by legendary Canadian music producer Bob Ezrin, and executive produced by Randy Lennox (Loft Entertainment) and Carrie Mudd (Peacock Alley Entertainment), the anthem “What I Wouldn’t Do (North Star Calling)” weaves Serena Ryder’s inspiring message and profound lyrics from her song “What I Wouldn’t Do” with Leela Gilday’s sonically beautiful bridge from “North Star Calling”.

The recording industry may slowly be waking up to the fact that some of its most important creators are wildly undervalued — one sign is the first-ever Songwriter of the Year Grammy, which Tobias Jesso, Jr. recently won for his behind-the-scenes work with Adele, Harry Styles, FKA Twigs, Omar Apollo, and others. But as our recent report on the state of the songwriting business emphasizes, the model for compensating writers is deeply broken. Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, and Dua Lipa all have one thing in common: they’re winners of the Grammy for Best New Artist. In most of those cases their wins were fairly predictable, feeling like the culmination of a massive year rather than the start of a new era for the artists. This is true for many — dare I say, most — Best New Artist winners of the past decade or so. Chance the Rapper, Sam Smith, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis all coasted easily to their wins, and even the less obvious picks like Bon Iver and Alessia Cara were still predicted by many Grammy watchers. Perhaps the last truly shocking Best New Artist was Esperanza Spalding, who took the award in 2011. And now, 12 years later, we might be in for a similar event.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Season 22 of The Voice is a tricky-ass one. On one hand, we’ve got a handful of seriously talented contestants. On the other — as always, I suppose — we have no guarantee that our fellow viewers will vote through the seriously talented ones (like Team Camila Cabello’s Devix, who I already miss) instead of just, say, the cute one (Team Blake Shelton’s Brayden Lape) or the country one (Team Blake’s Bryce Leatherwood).

The 2002 Grammys were an interesting edition. The “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack won Album of the Year, U2 won Record of the Year for the second straight year, and India.Arie infamously went zero-for-seven. However, the biggest story was the rise of Alicia Keys, who took home the most awards of the night with five. It was the moment she truly became a star. After that impressive sweep she became a Grammy favorite, even getting a nomination for Song of the Year in 2022 for “A Beautiful Noise,” 20 years after her awards debut.
Alicia Keys’s debut album, “Songs in A Minor,” was a success from the get go. The album’s lead single, “Fallin’,” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for multiple weeks. That was followed by the top-10 hit “A Woman’s Worth,” which officially made her more than a one-hit wonder. The album itself debuted at number-one on the...

The clock, as Zedd and Alessia Cara like to say, was ticking.
Jason Sudeikis noticed it — how could he not, when shortly after his cast and producers gathered on stage to accept their second consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, he turned to thank the Academy and uttered the immortal words: “Wait, we just got here! And we’re down to 30 seconds.”
But it wasn’t just winners crowned near the end of Monday’s brisk and bizarre ceremony that faced the teleprompter’s wrath. Matthew Macfadyen took note of the night’s swift dismissal music by raising his golden statue slightly and smiling in wistful remembrance of an honor lost as he was still receiving it. “There it goes,” he said, before squeezing in a few more loved ones’ first names.

Living in the shadow of a younger sibling is not ideal. But when that younger sibling is a teen pop sensation? Now that’s the stuff of nightmares.
Such is the concept of HBO Max’s “The Other Two,” created by former “Saturday Night Live” head writers Sarah Schneider and Chris Kelly. In the series, millennials Brooke (Heléne Yorke) and Cary Dubek (Drew Tarver) grapple with the sudden fame of their 13-year-old brother, Chase (Case Walker), whose adorable debut song, “Marry U at Recess,” has led to huge success.
As the show’s title would suggest, “The Other Two” centers around Brooke, a former competitive dancer with lackluster career prospects, and Cary, a struggling actor, as the two older siblings attempt to make names for themselves in New York City. While the show’s premise magnifies the infuriating concept of being outshined by a much younger sibling, what’s refreshing...

The Grammy for Best New Artist can be a double-edged sword. The award has been associated with a certain “curse” where winners in the category tend to fade away from the public consciousness rather quickly, especially in comparison to their fellow nominees. With a recent coronation of yet another Best New Artist, Olivia Rodrigo, I think it’s time to truly reevaluate whether the award is really a kiss of death. Let’s specifically take a look at the 2010s and onward.
A couple of winners fall into the “genre favorite” category, where the winning artist didn’t become a huge crossover star but still enjoys success in their particular field. For example, the 2010s opened with a win for country group Zac Brown Band. A lot of people mark their win with an asterisk, since that year’s breakout superstar, Lady Gaga, was deemed ineligible due to a Grammy...
