Born in Indonesia to Chinese parents, Jesica Yap is a talented composer who loves writing music that tells a story whether it's for commercials, short or feature films, video games, Youtube videos, or podcasts. Jesica is also a music producer, an accomplished pianist, and an educator.
After graduating from the Berklee School of Music with a degree in film scoring (her original score to picture was recognized at the Final Year Academy Rewards), Jesica moved to Los Angeles in 2014 with an opportunity to intern at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions, and Henry Jackman's Sacred Tiger Music Publishing. Upon completing her internship, she worked closely with Henry Jackman, learning the ropes and observing in his studio.
Since early 2016, Jesica Yap has been working as a full-time visual media composer. In both 2018 and 2019, she won an HMMA (Hollywood Music in Media Awards) for Best Original Short Film Score for a Foreign Language Film. In 2018, she was nominated for a Jerry Goldsmith Award in the Best Ads category, and for an HMMA for Original Commercial Advertisement Score. On September 16, 2021, she received two bronze medals from The Global Music Awards, a well-known international music competition, for both "lyrics/songwriting" and "female vocalist" for her quarantine-themed song, "Six Feet Apart." On November 05, 2021, Jesica was nominated for HMMA (Hollywood in Media awards) in the New Age/ Ambient category for her piano composition titled "The Journey."
Several films that she worked on were nominated for awards (and some even won!) at film festivals such as the Colorado Environmental Film Festival, London International Film Festival, Cinemambiente Environmental Film Festival, International Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival, XXI Short Film Festival, LA Shorts Film Festival, Los Angeles Indonesian Film Festival, and more. Some of these films screened at Laemmle Royal, Regal Theater, The Landmark Theater, UCLA, Warner Brothers Studio, etc.
Jesica Yap's additional accomplishments include composing and conducted the silent film, "Safety Last!" at the Coolidge Corner Theater, the Cutler Majestic Theater, the Dreamland Film and Performing Arts Center, and the Martha's Vineyard Film Center.
Jesica's work has been performed by prestigious orchestras like the Kalistos Chamber Orchestra, the Eszterházy String Quartet, Triple Helix String Quarter, and the string quartet of the Academy of Scoring Arts.
When Jesica is not composing or teaching piano, she occasionally performs with bands around the Los Angeles area such as the indie pop band, Walla Band. She also lends her expert piano skills to other composers for scoring sessions.
