The Girl on the Train is a film that might wander through a host of different theories, and films that may seem like similar theories pop up a few times a year, as direct-to-video or cable network efforts.
I hope potential audiences take into account the well-received book this is based on, and Director Tate Taylor‘s abilities when deciding on this one. Taylor, of The Help and Get On Up, should fit well in this odd ride, even if his work doesn’t make that obvious to everyone. He has knack for conversations and moments of introspection that should translate brilliantly to this, admittedly Rear Window-esque, thriller.
Of course, Emily Blunt may convince you as well.
The film has finally released some looks at more of what’s going on in the film, notably other members of the cast who make up what The Girl on the Train is looking at.

When two Colorado bass mainstays join forces on a track, you can bet that they’ll turn out something with flavor. Livetronica duo Big Gigantic and DJ/producer/instrumentalist/vocalist GRiZ are no strangers to working with each other as it is, and their latest collaboration, “C’mon,” proves them just as capable of seamlessly blending their styles as ever.
Dominic Lalli likely put his saxophone chops to use in “C’mon” – although for all we know it could have been GRiZ, as he’s known to break out the brass during his own performances from time to time. The funky, glitch-hop-inspired bass line segues from one instrumental section to the other, and the only real criticism I can make of the track is that it sounds awfully similar to what Big Gigantic released last year in the form of “Get On Up.”

Jauz has seen a truly meteoric career trajectory so far in 2016. The “Feel The Volume” producer kicked off The Friendzy Tour with a mind-boggling back-to-back set that featured more bass music titans than seemed necessary or reasonable, and he’s punctuated several of his stops with debuts of new tracks.
Even a month after the his tour has drawn to a close, though, the bass house pioneer doesn’t appear ready to slow down. In a mix he put together for Australian radio show Triple J, he included more unreleased IDs than the average DJ/producer can boast in their entire discography.
The mix leans considerably more towards the house end of the spectrum than a lot of Jauz’ live performances, and the stylistic range of the IDs reflects that. Also included in the eclectic pool of artists was Destructo, Martin Solveig, Skrillex and even Aretha Franklin.

Read More: Nyff Review: Don Cheadle's 'Miles Ahead' Isn't Really a Miles Davis Biopic Don Cheadle made quite the bold debut as a director at the New York Film Festival this weekend with "Miles Ahead," his highly anticipated drama about famed jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. While not unanimously praised, Cheadle's unorthodox approach to the biopic genre and ambitious storytelling earned a ton of respect from critics. In his B review of the drama, Indiewire Chief Film Critic Eric Kohn wrote, "Co-written by Steve Baigelman, who worked on the script for last year's James Brown biopic 'Get on Up,' Cheadle trades the standard biographical details of that earlier film for an intermittently enjoyable and wacky farce examining the conditions under which Davis returned to music late in his career." The movie co-stars Ewan McGregor, Michael Stuhlbarg, Keith Stanfield and Emayatzy Corinealdi. Watch a clip from the film above,...

The musician proceeds to do just that, giving Cheadle — who also handles co-writing and directing duties — full license to craft a subjective riff on Davis' troubled relationship to his own mythology. Erratic, unpredictable and constantly intriguing, "Miles Ahead" plays more like one of Davis' compositions than a traditional biopic, stumbling around with flashes of insight and a brilliant central performance. The musician biopic is well-worn territory at this point. Even though the personalities of these artists may be very different, their rise to success, fallout, and rise back up to relevance all feel incredibly similar to one another. Only recently have people started to play a little with the presentation of these stories. Last year, we had the James Brown biopic Get On Up, which basically shifted around the scenes in a random chaotic order, which makes sense for James Brown. In Love and Mercy, about the life of Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson, he is presented in two separate timelines, which adds a lot of energy and intrigue to the story while also letting us explore moments of Wilson's life and stuggles more personally. The first timeline finds Wilson as a young man (portrayed by Paul Dano), drifting away from the classic surf sounds he's known for into his own voice,...

Chadwick Boseman gives a swaggering, soulful performance in this most delectably funky and fresh of biopics. Get On Up, as directed by The Help‘s Tate Taylor, is an energetic and eclectic blast, packed with toe-tapping musical numbers and a groove all its own. Exploring the legendary James Brown both as a tremendously talented musician and as an extremely troubled man, it’s refreshingly free from clichés and more than happy to blaze its own, fascinating trail.
The film is different immediately, opening on an older, wearier Brown than any fan of the musician would think to visualize, menacing people in a strip mall with a shotgun. Their perceived slight against him? One of them, he believes, used his private bathroom without his consent. Get On Up doesn’t shy away from just how extreme an individual Brown was, or how brutishly he tormented the people around him, whether they were employees,...

What's interesting is what's just under that level. You have both "Gone Girl" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" chalking up eight groups. The former may or may not end up in the Best Picture category tomorrow (nothing would surprise me), but the latter sure did come on strong for its elements. After that, "American Sniper" has seven, "Boyhood," "Nightcrawler," "Interstellar," "Into the Woods," "The Theory of Everything" and "Unbroken" each have six and Sony Classics' hopefuls "Foxcatcher" and "Whiplash" ring in with five. Bassett said she reached out to Warwick in hopes she’d carry positive words back to the Houston family, in light of matriarch Cissy Houston speaking out publicly against the film in July.
“Well, I’ve spoken to Dionne. I was able to show it to her because I want Miss Cissy to see it,” Bassett told TheWrap at a Paley Center screening of the movie in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.

In a brief moment of creative boldness in The Theory of Everything, a young Cambridge student Stephen Hawking, played by Eddie Redmayne, ponders over a theoretical concept while pouring milk into a cup of tea. As the white milk swirls in blackness of the tea, the scene suddenly moves in reverse, the swirling moving backwards until the milk dissolves into nothingness. It’s a scene that not only gives the audience a primer into the advanced scientific concepts the film is working with, but also provides a glimpse into how Hawking perceives the world: a man so enraptured by science that he sees it everywhere, whether it be in a cup of tea or the glowing clothing of dance partners. - It’s a pity that the film doesn’t indulge in these visually creative moments more often, because the rest of The Theory of Everything is as conventional and safe as biopics can be.

Directed by Alejandro G Inarritu, Birdman, a black comedy about a washed-up actor trying to revitalize his career by writing, directing and starring in a Broadway play, has been heralded since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It joins a number of films released this year featuring performers of some kind, whether professional or aspiring, or people masquerading in their daily lives.
Some of these films follow the music industry, like Begin Again, centered on a struggling label executive who decides to record music with a singer-songwriter in various New York City locations; Beyond the Lights, about a hip-hop star struggling from the pressure of being on the verge of stardom; Get on Up, a James Brown biopic; and Whiplash, focusing on a drummer’s attempts to become a great jazz musician within a prestigious university ensemble and the vicious training techniques his instructor uses.

Black Film Critics Circle co-president Mike Sargent accompanied the release of his group's list of 2014 movie superlatives this year with a quote expressing praise for "an incredibly diverse and progressive year for black film." He then went on to broadly touch on the subject matter covered across that spectrum. Nevertheless, his organization's list of winners hardly reflects that diversity, I must say. "Selma" cleaned up, winning six awards including Best Picture. Not represented were films like "Beyond the Lights," "Top Five," "Dear White People," "Get On Up" or "Jimi: All Is By My Side." Just pointing it out. Check out the full list of winners below. And catch the rest of the season at The Circuit. Best Picture "Selma" Best Director Ava Duvernay, "Selma" Best Actor David Oyelowo, "Selma" Best Supporting Actor J.K. Simmons, "Whiplash" Best Actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, "Belle" Best Supporting Actress Carmen Ejogo, "Selma" Best Adapted Screenplay "Gone Girl...

“If you can’t break eggs to make an omelette, break the plate.”
We love to bring down oppressive regimes — at least in our films. What does this say about our ability to recognize our own situation regarding our desire for greater freedoms? Are we tapping our desire for change with the stories we tell? Are our artists as free to explore this desire for change as we think? Do they have to take the quiet road when walking that talk? If they are somehow oppressed, how and where is the oppression manifest? What can we learn by examining the work we made, distributed, and consumed this year?
In other words, if art is partially about showing us all that we can aspire to as individuals, communities, and a planet, what are our films telling us about where we should be headed this coming year?
Our examination shouldn’t stop there though.

We now have an even 20 screenplays available for download as Walt Disney Pictures has released the script for James Lapine's adaptation of his and Stephen Sondheim's musical Into the Woods. As of right now I have this screenplay just below the bubble line in my Adapted Screenplay predictions and I almost moved it into the field of nominees considering how little I think of Unbroken and still can't believe it's a screenplay the Coen brothers had any hand in crafting. For the most part that fifth slot is wide open right now, but I think my top four of The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Gone Girl and Wild feel like safe calls for nominations. (By the way, all four of those scripts are available below as well.) Give Lapine's Into the Woods script a once over and see what you think, the film hits theaters on Christmas Day.

While the Oscars have their own awards for music in film for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, the major music awards The Grammys also like to honor the music of motion pictures as well. Over the weekend, the nominees for the 2015 awards were announced, and there are some solid nominations. Now since the qualifying window for music to be considered for the Grammys is different than the Oscars, you'll see contenders from films that were released both in 2013 and 2014. It's no surprise that Frozen got nods in all three relevant categories, but Gone Girl, Guardians of the Galaxy and more also got nominated. Here are the relevant film related 2015 Grammy award categories and respective nominees (via La Times): Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media American Hustle Get On Up: The James Brown Story Frozen Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 The Wolf of Wall Street...

Update: Get the most updated list of Oscar contending screenplays available for download here. This year the screenplays are coming slow, but steady, as A24 has now added another new one to the list by releasing J.C. Chandor's script for his '80s-set drama A Most Violent Year, which recently won Best Film from the National Board of Review as long as a Best Actor award for Oscar Isaac and a Best Supporting Actress award for Jessica Chastain, though so far that's the only org that has shown it much attention other than a Gotham nomination for Isaac. A Most Violent Year doesn't begin hitting theaters nationwide until January so this is a chance to get in on the script early and see what you think.
